Applying for UIC DNP...

Specialties Doctoral

Updated:   Published

Hi all! I am applying for the DNP program at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with a primary care AGNP specialty. Does anyone have any suggestions on building a strong application? I have worked mostly on a med/surg unit and a surgical step down for the past 4 years (as an active duty RN). I have been on 2 deployments. My undergrad GPA was 3.55. Any suggestions are welcome as I am stressing out about the application process, separation from the military, and a move back to Chicago. Thank you!

I just got my email today even though the email was dated April 15th. I got accepted and will be at the Peoria campus.

Congrats! I got another copy of the email from last week. I wonder if they sent it again because it had gotten stuck in so many people's spam filters.

Thanks I just checked and I did indeed find two older emails in my spam folder. They sent out one saying that the emails went to spam/junk folders of those with Gmail accounts like me.

Anybody else get a call this morning about that class they are offering this summer? Anyone going to take it?

I didn't get a call..what class is it? Also, does anyone know what classes we will be taking first semester?

I don't know, something like a statistics refresher or something? I'm not sure if it's in person or online, she said with our acceptance package we get in the mail soon it will explain it. If it's in person I won't be able to do it. But I'm not sure about first semester classes. We'll probably find out at orientation.

I received my official admission packet yesterday, so that was cool! It's got information on submitting your deposit and immunization stuff. The due date for the deposit is May 9th, so now I've got to see if I get admitted to the other school I'm waiting on, and what my financial aid offer is. I emailed our financial aid person and haven't received a reply. Are my expectations off, or should we be using financial aid package offers from schools in our decision-making process?

I think its certainly something to consider in your decision, depending on your financial situation, but ultimately if you get into the other school as well I would say to go where you think you're going to get the best education and where you will get the most out of what you are learning. Student loans can always be used and paid off once you're an NP ;)

I'm obviously going to go to the school that is right for me. I feel like UIC is not very concerned about prospective students making an informed decision about whether or not to attend, though. And yeah, I realize I'm going to have to take out student loans. $100,000 in loans, though? That's ridiculous to me. I doubt people going to Vanderbilt or Yale are going to finish with loans at that amount.

I agree scarykarrey. I recently got in too and checked out the cost. HOLY COW. I still have loans from my BSN degree 60k and if I end up going to UIC, I would be in 160k in debt. It makes me think-Oh I should of just became a MD with all those loans. UIC is one of the TOP schools nationally for nursing grad school but I might pass too. How would a single person be afford everything else in life if 160k debt is on their shoulders and not even an MD with the MD salary. On top of it, NPs are underpaid :(. I would be 50 by the time I pay all those loans. Glad I am not the only one that feels this way. I might end up getting my masters online, post NP and then eventually DNP one day. Slowly but surely. Therefore, I can work and enjoy life at the same time. It's such a shame that these schools are asking for so much money especially when there is a demand for advanced practitioners. It's funny because there are alot of people that criticize schools like Chamberlain or what we call "money making schools"...but a good school like UIC is no different in the game. (just my opinions)

Well, ****! I just found out from the regional office I was accepted to that they actually offer Iowa residents in-state tuition. That totally changes the playing field for me. How is everybody else doing?

That's great news!! Wish I could get in state, I think Arizona might be a little too far though ha. Anybody get their official letter of admission from the graduate college? I'm still waiting for mind which is a bit annoying seeing as I can't get all of my login info to work until that happens. Mostly I just want to be able to log into the student off campus housing site to see what's available. Anyone else from the Chicago campus moving to Chicago looking for a place to live? I know nothing about the surrounding areas...
