Applying for UIC DNP...

Specialties Doctoral

Updated:   Published

Hi all! I am applying for the DNP program at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with a primary care AGNP specialty. Does anyone have any suggestions on building a strong application? I have worked mostly on a med/surg unit and a surgical step down for the past 4 years (as an active duty RN). I have been on 2 deployments. My undergrad GPA was 3.55. Any suggestions are welcome as I am stressing out about the application process, separation from the military, and a move back to Chicago. Thank you!

I know this post is a year old, but I am interviewing for UIC's DNP program in a few weeks and I'm extremely anxious! Would anyone be willing to shed some light on the interview process from last year? Was it a group interview?

Hi illingal,

I tried responding to this and for some reason I can't see it. So I'll try again. I do think it is a group interview; however I would have been commuting from Rochester, MN so I was able to do an interview via Skype. For some reason, we couldn't connect, so I just interviewed on the phone. I interviewed with the program lead for psych. I had already talked to her at length about the program in the past, so she knew who I was. The questions were primarily focused on why I wanted to get my DNP, what I understood the NP role to be, where my interests lie, what I might want my DNP project to be, etc. It was very low key and casual. I ended up accepting the University of Washington's offer and moved to Seattle. Please message me if you have any other questions.

Hi SoberGirl,

I know I am super late to the conversation, but I am currently searching for grad schools and am between the University of Washington and the University of Illinois at Chicago. I was wondering how you were liking UW and if you are happy with your choice? Also, do you have any tips when applying to these schools? Thanks!!

Hi RunLove13,

I am happy with my choice. However, I 'm sure I would have been very happy at UIC as well. If I had attended UIC, I think I would have gone part time the first year to establish residency then gone full time paying in state tuition. Part of the reason I'm so happy with my choice is I'm absolutely in love with Seattle. I don't think I'd ever live in the Midwest again. Also - NPs have full autonomy in WA. They don't in IL. As far as tips, I was pretty clear on why I wanted to be a NP - I think that helped

Happy to hear that you're happy where you are. As a former Midwesterner, I could totally understand the West Coast love.

Thanks for your reply, SoberGirl. I'm also from the midwest and am happy to hear that you are satisfied with your choice and are enjoying Seattle. I have decent grades and pretty good recommendations, but am hung up/most stress about my personal statement. Do you have any tips when writing a solid personal statement? I feel like that will either make or break me!
