Applying to BCC Jan 2009

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

Anyone else out there applying to Broward Community College for the Jan 2009 start date?!!! :clown:I'm so nervous and the application period hasn't even opened yet!

For those of you who were admitted on the point system, what kind of gpa did you have? Were any of you able to use your HOSA waiver? I know that they have eliminated the waiting list. I am going to meet with an advisor next Friday to look at my transfer credits. I hope I get in!

Kat-

Hey scratch what I said, Olive had a better idea, lol.

Olive-

So if you had a 3.6 and no pts for HOSA or living in Broward, then you had 12 pts, right? Thats good that you got accepted with 12 pts, well at least it makes me feel good, because when I apply, I will have somewhere between 12-14 and I was a little worried. Congrats on getting in. I can't wait to be in the program!

I think it was about that. When I spoke to admissions this morning, they said that 750pp applied for 250 spots. They also said at 9-10 points, ties began to form and then they had to look at other things like if the applicant took the other additional courses needed for the A.S. degree (e.g. psy, micro, micro lab, etc.).

All you can do is try for the highest grade you can obtain in your coursework...everything else will take care of itself.

Thanks. That is what I plan on doing. Nothing else I can do. But, I think I'll end up with minimum 12 pts. Plus I already took pysch, planning on taking Micro summer semester 09 (this way its done before I apply in August), and I'm going to be fulfilling my humanities requirement when I take AP2 so everything I need will be done.

At least this makes me feel better, about the ties starting at 9-10 pts. Well that is if you meant that people with pts above the 9-10 pts were ok. Wow 750 is a lot of people. Maybe next time they will rethink extending the deadline.

Congrats again.

I got my acceptance letter yesterday!! My program GPA was 3.57 and my overall GPA was 3.33. I did not have any points for HOSA or being a broward resident. I don't know how many points I had either. I had done the HCP class and I am now taking the last CEU courses.

Someone here posted that the orientation would be on Nov. 26, but my email said it would be Nov. 21 at 9 AM.

Congrats to everyone that's gotten in so far, and good luck to the rest of you still waiting :nuke:

Whew! That's great. I figure if I only get a B in AP1 lecture, and work hard to get A's in AP2 lect and lab, I will have a 3.57 as well.

Congrats on getting in!!

Can someone give me the name of an advisor I should talk to specifically for the nursing program? I know the advisors can help me with things, making sure all my ducks are in a row, but I know that sometimes people can give you the wrong info. Someone told me it would be better to just get advice from the nursing advisor(s). Thanks!

I just checked with my sister and she said her orientation is on Nov 21 at 9am at Central.

I got accepted! I heard back late Monday evening. My orientation is 11/21 at 1pm.

My Program GPA was 3.47, I am a Broward Resident (1 point) but NOT a HOSA grad (5 points).

I did take all CEUs and the HCP class, in addition to all Humanities and Micro. THe only classes I have left are Nursing to graduate.

For those of you WHO DID NOT GET IN, I strongly recommend taking all other classes, leaving only the Nursing left to be considered for next semester. If you have, don't forget to take:

Nutrition DEP2004

Human Growth and Development HUN 1202

These are required classes for your BSN, and by 2010, BC is anticipating offering the BSN, so you will be ready in advance if you take these.

Most of my classmates did not get in; one friend received an "alternate" acceptance- in case anyone turns down the spot she is in.

Good luck to those who got in, and keep your head up for those who didn't. 6 months flies by; trust me when I tell you/in the grand scheme of things, 6 months in nothing. I am 33 with a Bachelor's Degree, working in Accounting- MISERABLE, and going back to school!

Hi Assura, congrats and good luck. It seems that the cut off was around 3.45 to get in and 3.44 and below seem to be alternates.

May I ask how do you plan to transition fromw orking full time to being a full time student? I am facing this dilemma and I am just wondering how hard was it for you to step off and take the risk of quitting a job that was paying you to go to school full time and not working or making substantially less.

How hard was that decision?

HI there:

I was very fortunate to get this position, with the understanding of my school intentions. My employer has been extremely flexible, and if worse comes to worst, than I can go part time.

In the long run, I focus on my goal and longevity of the outcome, while being realistic. I still have a mortgage and life bills to pay, but student loans, and a strong will will make it happen!

Whew! That's great. I figure if I only get a B in AP1 lecture, and work hard to get A's in AP2 lect and lab, I will have a 3.57 as well.

Thanks sunraygurl. I had A's in all of the science pre-reqs. so that helped out, when I turned in my application the lady did the calculation there and I don't remember how many points she told me I had, but she did tell me that I had a very good chance of getting in. So, work hard for your A's those will come in handy!

I started in Jan 2008. Here's what my schedule looks like. Yours will probably be the same:

WINTER (Jan-May)

Nursing Process I (Jan-spring break)

Nursing Process II (March-May)

SUMMER

GI/GI (May -June) - 6 weeks

OFF (July-Aug)

FALL (Aug - Dec)

Specialty Rotation* (Aug - Oct)

Specialty Rotation* (Oct - Dec)

WINTER (Jan - May)

Specialty Rotation* (Jan-spring break)

Ortho- Neuro (March-May)

SUMMER

Cardio (May -June) - 6 weeks

Trends (July-Aug) - 6 weeks

* Specialty rotations include Pediatrics, OB, and Psych. The nursing department prefers that you remain on track. However, some students take the summers off. All of the classes are 8 weeks except the summer courses, which are 6 weeks. Two weeks may not seem like that much of a difference but it can be. I hope this helps!

You had to take Pharm and your math course during the first semester as well, right?

Yes, you take pharm and math for health science during your first semester as well. Although the nursing courses are 8 weeks, the math class is 6 weeks and the pharm class is the entire 16 weeks.

Do you think Pharmacology is doable online? Or too difficult?? What is that class like?
