2023 Applications to UBC and UVic NP program

Updated:   Published

Hi all,

I've applied to both programs to start in September 2023, and wanting to commiserate with anyone else who is anxiously waiting to hear. Looking back at previous years I'm feeling a bit discouraged since the admissions average seemed to be higher than I had been told by colleagues. Anyhow, let me know if you also applied and when you hear back from schools! Wishing you all the best of luck.

Congrats to everyone who has heard back! Sounds like a really qualified bunch.

Wondering if anyone has been put on a waitlist for UBC? I am on the UVic waitlist, but haven't heard anything from UBC since my interview. Trying to stay hopeful until I get a confirmed rejection letter!

Thanks ?

It sounds like a few people had multiple offers at multiple schools, so being on the wait list is extremely promising because there are many that will turn down offers!

I got my offer email for UVIC, and I'm waiting to hear from TRU (next week) as I live in a rural community close to TRU.
TRU is approx $16,000 for the whole program, plus $3000 for books/supplies.
I don't know UVIC costs, but I presume roughly the same.

I would be down for a cohort group for discussions.

Oh, you'd rather risk the new program with TRU? I assumed everyone would choose the established schools if they had the choice. They will be happy to have locals, I'm sure if you were good enough for UVIC and UBC that you'll get the offer for TRU too!

Hi for those waiting for uvic, I got my rejection letter. I'm bummed out, was hoping those who did get into uvic could share with me their work experience? I have an average of 90% so I don't think my grades were the issue. I'm a critical care nurse, and prior to that I worked on a cardiac step down unit. So maybe I'm lacking in experience. Would love some insight!

And those of you still waiting, good luck!!

I'm sorry Elephant1234- that really sucks. I can't really shed much light on how they judge applications, though I have heard from previous students that the personal statement is critical and the references really should be glowing and from people who they see as important (professors, supervisors, managers). I thought GPA was a really important factor but I'm not so sure. I also have heard they tend to prefer people coming from more of a "generalist" background, like primary care, ER, community nursing and not so much specialists. Sorry I can't shed more light. My strengths were 1) research experience 2) leadership experience 3) I've done some extra coursework that's relevant to the NP Program (UNBC rural nursing course on advanced assessment).

Hope this helps for next year! Try to not be too hard on yourself.

I think so? I mean, I work in Kamloops urgent care clinic currently, and the program - albeit new - still needs to go through the same approval process with BCCNM. They did say it will be a learning curve for all, and honestly, I'm totally comfortable flying by the seat of my pants through the process.
I guess for me, the cost in fuel/ferry to drive down to Victoria for the In-house stuff will add up. Secondly, I am on a farm with lots of big and small critters, so the more I can avoid being gone for periods, the better. I know this isn't avoidable for practicums,  but the more I can avoid being away, the better.

I will find out next week, and if I'm lucky and get an offer from TRU, I'll  take a few days to weigh it all out.

I'm sorry to hear this. That really sucks.

my GPA for BScN is about 85%, BCIT ER 90% and BCIT ICU 90%. I have experience primarily in ER and ICU (both community level and tertiary), and newly hired into the urgent care clinic. ER focuses on all ages care from all walks of life. ICU was the "dig deeper" and I was a Covid ICU nurse, so focusing on rapid change during uncertain times. I don't have any research experience, nor do I have a lot of leadership, however I do love to teach nursing students when the situation allows (hard to take a second year into trauma on a daily basis....). I have also worked on the coast and the interior in both level 3 community sites and tertiary sites.
From what I understand, the essay is a huge part.  Speaking to your experiences and what influences your decisions. NP was not a last minute decision, something I have planned out both in my areas of nursing and financially, plus I have a lot of insight from the patients side of things when my spouse was critically ill - so I touched on my experience from that point of view as well.
references is the other part. I have some very skookum references (two managers and a teacher from bcit who I kept in contact with).

hopefully this helps  DO NOT GIVE UP. Spend the next few months working to improve your application for next year  and if you don't get in again, just keep trying. DO NOT let this stop you from pursuing the NP route - if this is truly what you want to do

Thank you @rimlak and @alibaba3! You guys will make AMAZING NPs! And I won't give up, just my first year trying and only applied to one program. I have a lot to focus on now ?

I applied to 4 programs, being that they are all programs I can do from a distance. I applied to UNBC , University of Alberta, UVIC, and TRU. At the end of the day, If I needed to drive to PG or victoria, then I will. Spread your applications out if you can. I did not apply to UBC as they were in-house and I cannot afford it down there nor can I leave the critters.

Maybe look at applying at an urgent-care setting, primary care, or even ER. These areas cover all walks of life, all ages, and all types of presentations. Increased training also allows for the increased scope as well. ICU can be a niche area, and despite being able to manage a vent, CRRT, ECMO, and every tube known to man that can go in every hole that a person may have, you will not typically see the type of patients you may see as an NP (This is just my thoughts/opinions only, I am not sure if these are reasoning they take into account).

Just take a few days to be bummed, then start focusing on next application period!

@Rimlak, thanks for that info! I'll definitely spread it out for next year. I also need distance ED as I can't really leave my little one. I really thought being trained in crrt and ecmo gave me that advantage haha! I will focus more on the primary care setting going forward!

Sorry if this is a silly question but where is everyone getting the emails? I haven't received any news from unbc or uvic. Nothing on my personal email of acceptance or rejection. Please let me know I don't want to miss a window

@Leckiecharms I received mine through my personal email
