Hi there,
It sounds like you live outside the US that is why you don't have SSN? Yes, they recently change the rule about allowing foreign nurses in taking NCLEX unless they have SSN. They are also scrutinizng applicants now from other country specifically Australia, Philippines due to problem with concurrency.. They are not allowed to take the NCLEX- RN in the State of California unless you attand a school of nursing in the US and complete the hours for medical- surgical nursing and OB both theory and clinicals. We have quite few applicants in our school internationally just to complete the hours required by the BRN.
hope this helps.

Can not get a US SSN until in the US with a valid work or immigrant visa. May have to consider another state
Thanks for your reply, I do live outside the US but not from the countries you mentioned. Can you please throw more light on the hours required to be completed, does that apply to any international applicant and will it allow you secure SSN ? I appreciate your response

Completing the needed hours will not get you a SSN. Only a work or immigrant visa will get you a SSN. You will have to try a different state.

I beg to defer, All Australian nursing degrees, DO NOT have concurrency problems, unless the student is part time and have requested and the university has agreed for the student nurse to do clinical placements at a different time.
You learn the theory - you do the clinical practice. The way it should be done.
The Australian nursing degree however does not involve obstetrics as this is considered a midwifes place and not general nursing.

The only way for a non citizen/non permanent resident to obtainable social security number is to have a valid work authorization visa. And then it is only issued once on US soil. So there is no way for you to obtain one sans work visa. Many states will permit you to apply but won't issue a license until a valid social security number is presented.
Excellsior College New York nursing graduates have had same issue recently. See state board licensure requirements here
These are states having concerns over concurrent theory and practicum
Alabama
Arizona
California
Georgia
Illinois
Kansas
Louisiana
Maryland
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
Which leaves 37 others that don't have these requirements.....but you need to be physically in the US to get a Social Security number.

Hi, what country are you coming from, this will help us some guidance. Different countries are affected in some way, some not so bad, for others, it's going to be some difficult times for the applicants.
Besides, the SSN requirement, do you also have the local nurses's license from your country? Many states, such as CA, needs a copy to verify that you're properly licensed in your country.
