I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.
A little about me:
Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!
You all are wonderful. I have worked really hard to get to this point, and reading the interaction here on Allnurses always helps me see the camaraderie and support there is among nursing students. I hope to add to that as well as bask in it! Thank you for the details about what I can expect with the OHSU Monmouth application timeline.
I am mom of six growing-up children with a great husband and a strong desire to be a nurse. It has been wonderful getting back to school, and even though it is taking longer than I originally thought it would, I am nowhere near bored or frustrated. I am applying for Chemeketa and OHSU Monmouth. Can anyone tell me what they do about the daunting expense of OHSU or other BSN programs? I have also applied for scholarships, but heck, OHSU costs as much as a house, almost. How does the rubber meet the road, so to speak, about that huge cost?

I haven't been accepted to nursing school yet, but I've asked the financial aid departments several questions. And to be honest a lot of students are in similar situations and make it through nursing school just fine. If you are accepted, the schools will find a way to make sure you can afford it. I do know Wells Fargo has private loans for students in a healthcare field and its fairly easy to get. Scholarships can be tough to come by as they are limited but there are programs that repay your loans if you agree to work for them for 2-3 years, this is usually for rural or urban health centers. Hope this helps, just trust that if you get in there will be a way. And remember that financial aid is supossed to cover cost of living.
Hi All, I'm a new applicant. I had handed in my application to PCC the afternoon the application was due because I had just moved to Portland and have been searching for a nursing program. I have my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and have been a CNA for the past two years. All my pre-requisites were done outside of Portland, and I only had one B+ out of all the pre-requisites. I love the thrill of having something to do all the time as a nursing assistant, and I enjoy being on my feet and up and about. Plus the families I've worked with as I took care of their loved ones in memory care facilities are darling!
I had always wanted to pursue nursing initially, and had been admitted to the University of Portland as a freshman, but I didn't get enough scholarships or had the finances to attend. My first year at the university I did attend, I didn't do too hot in Anatomy so I was technically held back until I could take it again. I ended up changing my major instead because my advisor had told me I shouldn't even consider being a nurse for doing less than stellar in that hard science class. Fast forward six years, I studied something else and I aced Anatomy when I decided to tackle my goal of being a nurse again! I would love to go into rehabilitative nursing because for some time, I did consider Occupational Therapy. I love working on the activities of daily living of individuals. I enjoy bringing out the best in folks when it doesn't seem like situations may allow it.
Questions: Do I HAVE to take the math placement test despite already taking a college level algebra course? I placed that in the pre-requisite slot, but I'm afraid they won't take that for some reason. Or my Anatomy courses that covered the material in two quarters, not three, at the institution I took them at. It covered the same material (I compared the course descriptions with the courses I took). Just these little things AFTER my submission are driving me crazy.
Best of luck to everyone though! Hope to get that proctored essay.
Hi Kimberly!
You should be fine with the math class, as long as your previous math class was Math 95 or equivalent. I also took A and P at another school, however we were on semesters, not quarters. You need 12 quarter credits, or 8 semester credits of A and P- if that makes sense. They also are able to look these things up if they need to. Good luck with everything!
Hmm. I had to move from Spokane, but was able to take my 241 course there during a summer. It was lecture and lab, but was 5 credits in total. During any other quarter, it was still 5 credits. So was 242, if I had stayed in the city longer. At Tacoma CC (where I was before Portland), I was allowed to take 242 because each institution had a two-course sequence and it followed naturally after SFCC. Tacoma, though, was 6 credits and was also a lecture and lab. Each school does it differently it seems. I would hope PCC takes that into consideration. I've covered all the material from 231, 232, and 233 based on the descriptions!
Thank you for your response though- it was reassuring! I'm just fretting over the little details now. Eeek!

Sorry! I didn't see this until now. While GPA will play a large part, it isn't the ONLY thing that's considered, from what I understand. I'm in the accelerated program, so it may be a little different. I, too, didn't have a great cumulative GPA. I didn't have any medical experience either. I think the Insight Resume portion may have scored me some points because it showed that I was dedicated and willing to work hard despite my past scholarly mistakes.
Feel free to PM me with any questions!
Good luck, everyone!
