Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Thanks guys. Man, I went all over the OHSU website trying to see how many students are accepted to the BSN and I came up with nothing. Does anyone have a link?

BS with a major in nursing program (2012)

  • Ashland campus: approximately 229 applications for approximately 48 positions
  • Klamath Falls campus: approximately 76 applications for approximately 16 positions
  • La Grande campus: approximately 101 applications for approximately 24 positions
  • Monmouth campus: approximately 223 applications for approximately 32 positions
  • Portland campus: approximately 334 applications for approximately 24 positions
  • Average prerequisite GPA statewide: 3.89

Accelerated BS Program (2012)

  • Approximately 500 applications

  • Admitted approximately 64 students for the summer cohort and 32 students for the fall cohort

  • Average GPA of accepted students: 3.84

Im a student at the Monmouth campus and we have 32 students, I think that is the most of all the programs. This year our campus isnt doing an essay only an interview and I know that sounds absolutely terrifying but if it wasnt for the interview last year I am not sure I would have gotten in purely on my essay. It is a huge part of the points and I am a better speaker that writer. Just a thought :) I think there where 220+ applicants that had complete applications and 78 where invited to interviews. I think some of the students counted at the Ashland campus are RN-BSN students. They currently have an on campus bridge program there...for now. I could be wrong though.

I am in OHSU BSN student my overall GPA was not horrible but not great but my prerequisite GPA was very high and I got in, dont give up! If you need to just retake a few prerequisites, the average prereq GPA for my class was 3.87 I think so if you can get around there you have a good chance. OHSU is moving to interviews too which mean a lot so practice your interviewing skills.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts-- It can be discouraging to hear from people that you need to have perfect cum gpa's and prereq gpa's and be something close to pretty much a nurse to even be considered. So it's nice to know that although the competition is tight--it's not like you need to be an airspace engineer with a flawless school history. I consider myself to have pretty good "stats" but I can't help but feel supernervous  Have I mentioned the wait sux??!!

The turnaround time from the closing of applications to interviews isn't too long. Any thoughts on when we would be notified if chosen to proceed?

I applied to the ABSN at OHSU and linfield--there are no proctored essays or interviews--just essays, so the wait truly is like 2 months away...I don't know about the other programs.

Hi RASKL I just applied to the Linfield BSN program to start Fall of 2014. I dont have the most AMAZING GPA but I have a lot of hands on medical experience as well as a ton of hours of volunteer work. Does Linfield primarily judge GPA?

For the OHSU-Monmouth campus I was notified that I received an interview in march I believe and my interview was either the end of April or beginning of May I believe I had my acceptance call on the 8th of May. I think I was notified within weeks of the due date that my application was complete and would be considered.

Good luck, everyone! I know that today is the last day to apply for many of the local programs. We have done all we could up to this point...the next step is to see if our applications are accepted to be moved into the next round! You all rock, and I hope we all get into our first-choice schools :nurse:

Same to you! :) It feels good having everything submitted- but at the same time I don't know what to do with myself for the next couple of months.

Should I take up knitting?
