Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

@2nd wind last year I got both a generic email from OHSU and then one from Monmouth specifically, each campus does it differen. A friend of mine at OHSU-PDX received a letter that stated her application was complete then one 4 months later saying she was accepted and thats it! Last year Monmouth was the only one who interviewed so I know it was really different then! Our interviews where not until late May so that is awesome that they are so early this year. I am current sophomore at OHSU-Monmouth, Good luck!

Did anyone on here apply to Linfield College BSN or am I a lone ranger

I applied to the accelerated program at linfield and to the Portland campus OHSU 3 year program. I haven't seen hardly any current applicants for linfield accelerated program on allnurses this application cycle. But there still is probably a lot of applicants.

I received this on the 28th of February. Now the questions fly faster in my brain--why was mine different than yours?. . . Did they change the timeline due to a huge volume of applications?. . .. . .What else do we have to do, during the end of this term, other than painfully speculate? :) 8(

They all all must be different. I received my email March 3, despite the fact it's dated January. I applied to the Ashland Campus. (See below)

@Hustonc

Exactly. There are a total of 70 points possible. The GPA points are out of 40, 11 points for completion of A&P, a 2nd degree, and completion of all prerequisites. There are 19 discretionary points for things like residency or completeion of Micro etc. You can see more here https://www.mhcc.edu/docs/LimitedRestricted/NursingGuide.pdf

Awesome! Thanks:). Sorry for typos. Chasing after three kids under five and working from home, means that I'm usually typing and walking at the same time without proof reading. Haha!

It it sounds very comparable to RCC. Same number of discretionary points and total points. That gives me hope! I got 57.08 total points for this application period. However, we have not heard anything about the next steps yet. I hate this hurry up and wait process.

I agree! I heard from MHCC so soon that I'm super antsy to hear from the others. Good luck to you! Hope you hear soon.

Yay! I heard from OHSU - Monmouth and I'm scheduled for an interview!

That's so exciting!!! Congrats and good luck to you:). Did they call or email? Just curious.

Email. I was on a break in Microbiology and happened to check my email. So exciting!

Marburg, do you live in Portland, do you know how many applicants there were? I only have a 3.4 so my hopes are not high for getting in. If they go off experience I have an awesome resume of volunteer hours and work hours in the healthcare setting but if they are more GPA based I am screwed lol. I am from Seattle, WA so I really havent heard anything about Linfield
