Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

I got an email from MHCC that I didn't make it to interviews. I'm a little bummed about it, but also not surprised, because I was probably the least likely to get into that school of the three I applied to. Has anyone heard from PCC yet? Any idea when they're expected to send out invites to the essay? I'm anxiously awaiting their response...! I'm also trying to forget about OHSU, because June is just so far in the future... Uhrg. I've done all of the school applications and almost all scholarship/financial aid paperwork I can do at this point, and now I just... sit on my hands?! It's driving me nuts...

Also, congrats to folks who got an interview at Mt Hood!! Good luck with that process!

I'm not sure, actually. From what I've been told, crossing 50 points is very important, but I'm unsure about the actual threshold. RCC, from what I remember, gets fewer applicants bc of its location, and is therefore supposed to be less competitive. I know nothing offhand about their numbers though.

RCC is Rogue Community College, right? How many discretionary points do they offer? Each school seems to be a little bit different in the total number of points available.

They offer up to 19 extra disgresionary points in addition to the usual points such as GPA, completion of A&P, etc. Yes, RCC is Rogue Community College. There were 206 applicants last year.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering...for those who were invited to interview with MHCC, what were your point totals? Mine were up there... I have a 4.0 GPA with all pre-reqs completed, volunteer work with patient contact, extra points for A&P being done, micro finished, and the extra point for turning in my application early...yet I wasn't invited. I'm not sure what those points added up to be, because I'm too tired to add them up again (haha), but what the heck! What do I need to do to get an interview?

Hopefully my other applications are going better! Good luck to you all.

Seriously jellyfeesh?

That seems so frustrating! I am not familiar with their numbers. Sounds like the competition is tough this year. Perhaps you could give them a call and ask them to be sure that your application was complete and what may have improved it? I'm not sure.

Hey jellyfeesh it sounds like mine and your applications were identical and I didn't get an interview either. I'm starting a CNA class in a week and starting some volunteer EMT work to try to boost my applications for next year. I figure that's why I didn't get an interview since I know it wasn't my grades.

Oops. That should say discretionary not disgresionary. I could not edit my post for some reason?

I had a similar application and didn't make the cut either. I'm curious as well to know what the cut-off points were for an interview. One thing I noticed about Mt Hood's application was that they didn't count any work or volunteer experience that didn't have certification or licensure associated with it. That accounts for up to 11 points! Which is not small potatoes ...if I'm reading the application guide correctly, those 11 points would require an applicant to have 1000+ hrs experience as a CMA/EMT/CST and LPN/CNA with 2041 + hrs, which is a lot but also do-able. I'm guessing that just a few points from CNA or MA experience could have made the difference for me (and you, too) in getting called to interview.

Good luck to you, Jellyfeesh, on any other applications you might be waiting on!

I had very similar stats to the rest of you who didn't get an invite to MHCC.

3.96 GPA, Bachelors degree, extra point for turning in my application early, all pre-reqs finished, patient contact for my job as well as volunteer work.

But I am not a CNA or MA or anything. Maybe that is the difference? Competition sounds tough this cycle!

That has to be the difference...I only applied to Linfield and OHSU but it seems like its a little unfair that someone who works in patient care as, for example, an MRI tech or X-Ray tech can't get full discretionary points for clinical experience.

I was invited for an interview at MHCC and I only had a 3.67 GPA, but I am a CNA. I also applied to CCC with a 3.9 GPA on their application and 3 points for my CNA. The CNA must be where they are making their decision.
