Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

I think I had 57, but they didn't provide a total. I don't recall the app guide saying anything about points for volunteer experience, but they did give points for licenses such as the CNA.

I just calculated my points for MHCC and I had 50.08. I completed all A&P, all 45 credits, medical terminology, never repeated A&P, took Microbiology, and then 3 points for CNA.

Ah, I got 7 points for CNA but didn't receive 3 points for the A&P because I repeated two courses.

Hi! I was invited for an interview at MHCC. I had 57 points. I can't remember my point total for the other schools off the top of my head. I have a 4.0 and CNA experience. I was an avid reader of last year's thread and am excited to finally be at this point! This is my 4th year taking my pre-req's. I have just been going slow and steady so I could work. It has taken ssoo much longer than I originally thought it would to get to the point of applying for nursing school. Good luck to everyone!

In your experience (anyone) when does OHSU/Monmouth do their interview invitations? I am doing the essay at Chemeketa, still waiting to hear from OHSU.

They must be getting ready to send invitations within the next week or two, as the dates for interviews are as follows:

Ashland Campus: April 5th and 19th, 2014

Klamath Falls Campus: April 3rd and 4th, 2014

La Grande Campus: April 4th, 2014

Monmouth: April 5th and 7th, 2014

Portland: not conducting interviews

*Please note: these interview dates are subject to change.

Hello everyone!! My name is Shenaye and I also received an invite to the interview at MHCC. April 17th from 9-11! Will anyone else be attending with me? My GPA was 3.5 or 3.6 and I believe I had 50.5 points. I have been a CNA for 8 years and have worked for OHSU since 2009. I wish you all the best of luck and don't give up! @bhorton93 I have heard that it is not subjective and that being a CNA doesn't influence the decision. I think it may be in the discretionary points where being a CNA helps. I received a total of 7 points for CNA.

So it isn't an actual invitation to an interview, more of a "Keep these dates reserved" notice while they're going through the applications.

I didn't apply to MHCC. I was just curios how other programs are doing it. I live in Southern Oregon. I'm pretty computer savvy and could have done that myself, but I thought I'd save time and just ask in case you knew off the top of your head ;).

I forgot about that email. I bet people were calling too much, so they decided to send out a more detailed email.

I received this on the 28th of February. Now the questions fly faster in my brain--why was mine different than yours?. . . Did they change the timeline due to a huge volume of applications?. . .. . .What else do we have to do, during the end of this term, other than painfully speculate? :) 8(
