Applicants to Portland/Salem Area Nursing Schools 2014

Published

I know that it's early, but I really wanted to get a jump on this. I have read the past two years' threads from start to finish and have seen the amazing support given by everyone involved. Considering how competitive it is for nursing school admission, it is extremely informative and heart-warming. I will be applying to all the schools in the Portland/Salem area to which I will qualify. This next year is going to be rough, but ever since I started on this journey I have loved every moment.

A little about me:

  • I am 33, married, no kids.
  • I live in Salem and have taken the bulk of my prerequisites at Chemeketa.
  • I have been working as a Dental Assistant for 2 years and feel that it is supremely unfair that many of the OCNE schools do not count dental assisting towards their "direct patient care" discretionary points. (I went to school for a year to become a dental assistant. I have dealt with medical emergencies, bodily fluids and have had my fingers in mouths on a daily basis! I'm grumbling, I know.)
  • I have a 4.0 GPA (so far) for all of the OCNE prerequisites (My single B in one of three Chemistry classes will haunt me when I apply to Linfield)
  • I am still one term away from finishing my prerequisites for the majority of the schools to which I plan on applying
  • I don't really think that I will be lucky enough to be accepted to any of the Portland-area community colleges due to my lack of necessary discretionary points (if any of you CURRENT students have found otherwise, I would be very interested to find out what you know!)
  • I will be applying anyway, because I know that I should at least make it onto a waiting list or two and as I have seen in previous threads - they do go through their waiting lists!
  • I sincerely hope that all my hard work will pay off and that I will be accepted SOMEWHERE

Again, I know this is early, but I look forward to seeing the responses from everyone!

Hello Everyone - I have been following the thread but lacked to confidence to state my interest in OHSU's SON...maybe there was a little worry of jinxing myself. Anyways, I also heard from OHSU this morning that I have been asked to interview (Monmouth Campus); I am soooo excited! I also have an interview for a mental health technician position tomorrow at the Oregon State Hospital so I'm kind of just in a daze, a very happy daze.

Congrats!!! I'm so glad you are joining the conversation. Good luck to you:)

Thank you Hustonc! Good luck to us all! :)

Good news! I have an interview with OHSU (La Grande campus)! Super thrilled. In other news, I was wait listed at U of P. I'm cool with that...it's an honor just to be nominated. Waiting to hear from Linfield.....

:woot:

Has anyone else in this cycle applied to Clark College in Vancouver for Fall start?

I got my email today too! OHSU Monmouth wants to interview me. One less thing to worry about! Has anyone gone through this before? What takes two hours about this interview? Also, is it like a job interview? Is it a group interview or private? Also, are we supposed to be talking about details like this to each other, or are we supposed to go in not knowing what will happen?

Ashland is having a mock interview to practice for the real thing. They are hosting it on Monday. I'm sure they will answer those questions at that time. Assuming most campuses run it similarly, I can report back what I find out. :)

Congrats and and good luck to you!

landij, I am from Portland.

I applied last year and received my denial letter on April 4th. I'm not sure how many applications were received, but I remember that basically you had a 1/3 shot at being accepted.

Linfield is my top choice because they don't base everything off of a high GPA, which I appreciate because I have a lot of work experience and volunteer hours, too :)

Good luck!!

Just a little "pick me up" for the OHSU-PDX applicants: I went to their info session last summer and they announced that they received a grant enabling them to increase their 3 year BSN cohort from 24 to 40 this year. The increase is to allow for more minority students. I do not know if this increase is permanent or if it's only for this year...

Great! I will be waiting here for information!

That's awesome! What I would give to be one of those 40!

Hustonc-

I can't wait to hear how your experience at the mock interviews goes! Enjoy!
