Greetings fellow future nurses! I just mailed my application packets for Mt. Hood CC, Clackamas CC, and Portland CC today and excited to be done with them. I have my proctored essay for OHSU this Wednesday and am a little worried because I have NO idea what is going to be asked. I haven't been able to get any feedback on what is on any of the essays. I am also applying to Chemeketa but am probable wasting my time as I am missing 2 of the pre-recs required there that aren't required at the OCNE schools. Well, the worst they can say is no, right?
Anyway, the Oregon Nursing Programs sections has been a little dead lately so I was hoping to spark some dialogue. This is my first year applying and I'm already getting a little stressed. I kind of have a lot riding on getting in somewhere next fall. My fiance and I are kind of planning on it. I'm hoping that doesn't backfire! How's it going with everyone?
With regard to cost at CCC: I'm a nursing student there this year and my cost for the year came out to $3,881. Fall term was $1,317, but I took Writing 123 that term also - you actually only have 9 nursing credits you have to take. Fall term is when you have to purchase all your books though, and that could cost you up to $1,000. Also, you have to buy two sets of scrubs.
Winter term was $1,282, with 12 credits of nursing courses.
Spring term also cost $1,282 and was also 12 credits of nursing classes. If you take the optional CNA 2 workshop that's $60. (You can get your CNA 2 after that, if you don't already have it, since you're a nursing student.)
In my experience, college costs always go up every year, but this can be a baseline for your calculations, those of you who were wondering about costs. Hope this helps!
Lilpoka,
I love Clackamas. The faculty are the best. Nursing school takes some getting used to, however. The teaching style is very different from what you're used to from pre-reqs and/or previous college experience. They set it up so that critical thinking is the order of the day, and it's very hard to get used to at first. There's a lot of self-directedness required as far as finding and reading relevant information for topics to be discussed in class. In class, a lot of the time you're applying information rather than necessarily "being taught." They start you off very gradually at Clackamas, giving lots of theory and psych/social stuff first term. But it's good. I feel that I am being molded into a nurse at an appropriate rate. :).
Lilpoka! Congratulations on completing another interview/essay!!! I take my next Thurs. What was the format? Did the questions have to be handwritten or done on a word processor? How many in your group, how many interviewers? Please don't answer any of my questions till you've had a beer or two ![]()

That may be about right for MHCC, they're cost per credit is higher than PCC, and they have more for fees they will charge as well.
