Applicants to Portland area schools 2011

Published

How's everyone doing with their Apps?

I applied to MHCC, CCC, PCC and Linfield.

It's my first year applying and I'm a nervous wreck!!!

How long does it usually take to hear whether or not you got an interview?

I was glad to see CCC changed their deadline to Feb 15th like the other OCNE schools-I think it'll make the waiting more bearable!

Anyone else want to share points to see how tight the competition is this year?

Other than Mt. Hood, I don't get too many discretionary points. :(

Heres what I *think* I have (figuring them myself):

MHCC-63 points

CCC-50 or 51 points depending on how they round up your gpa

PCC-54 points

Good luck everyone!!!

Let the nail biting, stalking the mailbox begin! :lol2:

Can people who got into or are wait listed for Linfield give me an idea of your pre-requisite GPA? Am I correct in thinking that's all they look at? If I don't get in somewhere this year, I might apply there next year....

Gardenstt, my prereq GPA for Linfield was in the 3.9 range, but I think they put a lot of stock into the Insight Resume. They better, because it was an awful lot of writing! I feel like I have heard of the widest range of GPAs getting into Linfield, so they must really take recommendations and life experience into account.

Congratulations to all of you who got in and also to those on the waitlist! I received a big fat rejection letter in the mail from Linfield on Saturday, so I would be very happy to be on their waitlist at this point. However, I will reapply next year if I don't get in somewhere this time around. I too would love to know the gpa's of those accepted. Mine was a 3.72, which I'm assuming wasn't high enough. I was hoping that work and volunteer experience would help, but I guess the competition was very tough this year. Congrats again to everyone!

Swilly,

Sorry to hear about your rejection letter. The competition to get into any school is fierce. Though I can't substantiate this with concrete data for all the Portland and neighboring schools, I'm left with the impression one must have a GPA in the 3.9 and up range. PCC listed their stats for the class starting 2010 and the average GPA was a 3.92. I was told by admissions at OHSU and CCC they were similar. One advisor at CCC told me, "if you're not prepared to get all A's, don't even start". If I recall correctly, something like 65% of those admitted to PCC for 2010 already had a BA/BS. Yeah, I know...it sucks. Perhaps you may get into another school. :-)

Gardenstt- I had a 4.0 for my pre-reqs, but I still had winter and spring (A&P 2 & 3, bio 101 and chem 104, and nutrition) to go when I applied. (And if I have my way I'll still have a 4.0 when I get out, but this online chem course might best me yet!) Granted, I had my BS, but I also think they weigh the Insight pretty heavily in their decision.

For the waitlisters- my friend was waitlisted last year and got in this fall. She is ROCKING! nursing school!! So, don't be too discouraged. Linfield is expensive and thus ends up some people's last choice (though it was my first and only!) There's a very good chance you'll end up with a spot, and obviously the admissions process isn't without it's flaws.

:( I'm so sorry to hear about your rejection letter. Was Linfield your first choice? What other schools did you apply to? I'm SURE you'll get in somewhere!

Also, was 3.72 your cumulative GPA or pre req GPA?

Hmmmm, this really puzzles me because I got waitlisted and my GPA is 3.68.

I have my CNA but haven't worked yet. (No previous degree nor volunteer work)

---- said via FB that the decisions are weighed heavily on GPA but the insight resume must be important too. (and yes, that took FOREVER for me to perfect!)

I guess you just never know what's going to happen in this applications process!

I am sorry to hear it. Last year I got rejected from CC, but I also did not have WR, bio233, and SS classes.

This year I still had Bs and I got into Linfield. My GPA was 3.8 and I had volunteer work and CNA work. But Linfield does not look for CNA nor CNA work. But this helped me in the essay. I got into spring. I should have taken Stat, chem, and Bio 101 this fall instead of CNA work. I need money!! I am taking Bio and Chem. this spring. I wish you all the best and year will past very fast.

Just an FYI:

---- from Linfield responded to my email (even though she is on vacation!) and they chose 60 alternates for the fall and spring.

Is anybody here applying for Chemeketa for 2011? This year, we have to write an admission essay 200-250 words per question. I wonder if you go over that length, they'd deduct points? It's not enough to answer a question in 1/2 page.

Ginnym,

Linfield was not my first choice only because of the long commute I would have had, but I know it's an excellent program. Good luck to you on getting accepted!

My gpa was only for the prerequisite courses. I am meeting with ---- next week to go over my application, so I'll have a better idea of things after that. I was hoping my work experience, volunteer experience, previous degree, and bilingual skills would have counted for something. I did apply to other schools with a slightly higher gpa, so I'm still hopeful! :D

I am. My best guess would be that you can go over the limit a little bit, but don't push it. I don't know how I will answer the q's in that short amount, but that just means that each word counts for even more! I'm going to start practicing them soon.... good luck :) and when is your essay?

I got into Linfield for Fall 2011 and I have a 4.0 gpa with everything finished. I also feel like I had very strong responses to the insight resume. Good Luck to everyone there is still Mt.Hood PCC and CCC :)
