Applicants to Portland area schools 2011

How's everyone doing with their Apps?

I applied to MHCC, CCC, PCC and Linfield.

It's my first year applying and I'm a nervous wreck!!!

How long does it usually take to hear whether or not you got an interview?

I was glad to see CCC changed their deadline to Feb 15th like the other OCNE schools-I think it'll make the waiting more bearable!

Anyone else want to share points to see how tight the competition is this year?

Other than Mt. Hood, I don't get too many discretionary points. :(

Heres what I *think* I have (figuring them myself):

MHCC-63 points

CCC-50 or 51 points depending on how they round up your gpa

PCC-54 points

Good luck everyone!!!

Let the nail biting, stalking the mailbox begin! :lol2:

I heard 200 people did essays last year and 100 got in?

Ah! you guys are lucky that you get your mail so early!! Mine comes in around 3 :( I'm positive I have 59 points. I didn't have enough volunteer hours for the 1 point. Last year you just had to be a volunteer in a hospital setting, now it has to be at least 100 hours :S Anyways, congratulations everyone on essay date :D

Hey Al34,

I can't remember where on the PCC site, and I just tried looking for it again, but it says somewhere how many people they accept for the essay and then how many get in. I am pretty sure you were right like from 200 to 100. Sorry I can't find it!!

Anyone know if the essay's are hand written or on a computer?

If one needs 100/hrs of volunteer time, I'm toast. I had no volunteer time. I squeezed out the CNA, but didn't do any CNA work. I'd simply lose too much money doing it. Moreover, I have long, tiring work weeks as it is. Any extra time I have goes to me.

Ha, I know .. I was trying to get 100 hours before deadline, but that was a really hard challenge for me! You get 1 point just for having your CNA license, so you are gold :D Yeah, I was thinking about doing the CNA, but it's time and money .. which I didn't have. I am glad you got to do it though, that gives you an edge/extra point ... good for you :)

Al34,

I am pretty sure it's computer.

This is my first application round, but there's information in another thread from last year about PCC's essay format. I think you could search "PCC essay" to find the thread...I know, my mail comes early, luckily I'm home today. Although my wait list offer from Linfield dampened my weekend last Saturday morning at 9 am. Still surprised by that one, I have to say.

For PCC, the volunteer requirement says "1 point will be awarded to applicants with demonstrated patient contact in a medical setting OR applicants with medical licensure and

No requirement on hours for volunteers, except you have to have patient contact, and it needs to occur in a medical setting. It's more for people like Kamaboko who got a CNA, but have fewer than 100 hours of work. And zero hours is fewer than 100!

To prep for the essay, I'll probably do something like I did for the OHSU proctored essay, mostly to collect and organize my thoughts on the topics that PCC describes - transferable skills, motivational fitness, tolerance, etc. Between Linfield and OHSU's essays, I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I have to offer a nursing program.

Oh, and I'm sure it's on a computer, because it's in the computer lab at Sylvania...

On the application, it says that the top 150-200 candidates are selected to write essays, the top 100 are offered admission, and the rest put on an alternate list. Not sure if that means that everyone is offered a spot on the list, but it sounds like it. Maybe the bottom 50 are not?

I just received my rejection letter....boooo. The letter stated there were 883 applications this year. I was surprised, I thought there would've been more. Good luck to everyone who has made it to the essay/interview round and to the students who get into the nursing program! Hopefully next year is my year.

just got my letter from pcc, invited to the essay...woohoo! just when i had resigned myself to the fact that i probably wouldn't get it.

i think i had 57.6 points, so i know i wasn't near the high end of the scale. i had a 3.9 gpa and no prior degree, only 1 point for work experience (unlicensed but with direct patient contact), foreign language points and did all prereqs at pcc with A's in A&P.

i am somewhat surprised considering what i am seeing on here with a lot of people having much higher points than me.

now for the essay...does anyone have experience with what questions they ask? and how many of them are there? i searched through some of the threads here but i guess i am hoping for something more specific on what to expect.

good luck and/or congratulations to everyone!

Hey Airbender,

I don't know about that because when I was with my counselor I specifically asked her about this and she said 100 hours volunteering ... oh well. It's in the past!
