Apollo College myths

Published

I want to say thank you to the people in the Arizona forums. I hope to move there in March. I have been researching all the schools for hours, and the info on this forum has been so valuable, because you can actually talk to people who have had expierence with each school.

About my topic, I have been reading allot of negative things about Apollo College, which I am like 90% sure that is were I will be going.

All the horror stories about accreditation and little old sally who spent 40,000 dollars on an education, and now her credits wont transfer and she has to start over bla, bla, bla.

I just got off the phone with a real nice admin counselor at Apollo. She has been there three years. She told me that they already have Matriculation agreements in place for several schools in Arizona that will accept Apollo credits toward a B.S.N.

You can also tranfer allot of prerequisites in to Apollo, and save allot on tuition. I will have six prerequisites that will transfer by the time I start in July. So, I will be done with R.N. in hand while you community collegers are still waiting to get in. Nothing wrong with that if you are 19 years old living with your Mom and don't have to wory about it, but for the rest of us in the real world with car payments, and rent or you are on the street: We need to get to work Now

Hello,

I am looking for help from someone who is far along in the Apollo nursing program...when I am finished with my second pre-requisite semester and am ready to enter the first "nursing" semester are the items below all I need to have in order to advance:

1. CPR Certification

2. Immunizations

3. Fingerprint Clearance Card

4. Some sort of Basic Skills course (not sure what this is or what it is for...on the documentation it looks like its some sort of training that is in lieu of being CNA certified?)

5. Passing grades in all pre-requisite classes

Also, is there a separate orientation before the 3rd semester begins to go over all of this type of stuff in addition to information about the clinicals? I just want to make sure I am on top of everything...I don't to miss anything.

Thanks for being patient with me :)

There is a mandatory orientation before the 3rd sem starts where all the details of what's rq'd of you will be reviewed, so it is there that you should get every single 1 of your qstns answered. Since stuff is added/deleted every semester at Apollo, be sure to follow YOUR syllabus and nursing handbook, faculty do not remember their own changes. You will have enough time to do all those little items before you start clinicals, it's for that that you need the cpr and pass drug test and all the rest. Be sure to also regularly check those boards in the office, imp stuff is posted there. Just check stuff off that list and you'll have all you need to start clinicals on time, you do NOT want to screw that up!

Ok, so is there anything I should be doing before that orientation (in addition to checking that board) I heard that fingerprint card can take up to 8 weeks to receive?

Who can I go to for information?

Thanks for all the info.

No, fingerprint cards will be back in under a month not 8 wks. I would direct all my qstns to someone in the nursing dept, make them work for the $$ you're paying them, don't let them leave you w/ unanswered qstns. The pgm changes rqmts all the time. I would find out what is nec for the clinicals, that's priority, the school for us had someone come to give cpr class, otherwise you'll have to do it on your own.

i totally agree with you...i feel like i need to speak with someone in the nursing department. not that i will contact them now, but can you give me the name of someone within the nursing dept. that i can contact as i get closer? when are we put in touch with the people within the nursing dept? i honestly feel like things have not been explained to me very well and i hate feeling unprepared.

thanks again for all of your help.

Thank you! ---- dianah

Kf15,

well welcome to apollo, the more self reliant you are, the better a student you will be there. you're doin the smart thing, be aware of what's coming up and get prepared, that's all you can do!

kf - I finished out my 1st semester at Apollo - all As, I'm pretty sure (and yeah, I know I'm still in the "easy" part and it will get harder). Thank you for all your reassurance and advice before I started. I was not confident that I could hack it and you gave me advice that continues to help me.

I will absolutley be following up on things. Is the nursing dept. located on the second floor...I just need to know where to find them.

Hey you bet, I did for you what I wish others had done for me, but it all comes around, eventually we all help each other. Make the best of the millisecond "breaks" between semesters and email me any questions, I have lots to share that I will not post here.

the nursing dept is on the 2nd floor by the elevators, eventually you'll be able to walk there w/ your eyes closed !

Get rest and stay strong, you'll be in 6th sem clinicals before you know it, then you'll be done.

Yes Kf15...you have been really helpful, thank you. I'll let you know if I have any more questions :)
