APEA Predictor

Updated:   Published

I am 6 months out from graduating...I have to say I am usually a sharp student and critical thinker. Nursing school was not ridiculously hard, I had a study like everyone else but not near the amount of hours, I had a new baby during my RN bridge program and managed to pass everything and stay on schedule with my classes despite having my baby on holiday break (lucky timing).

I have been a nurse for 10 yrs now, between being an LPN and an RN and am now almost done with an FNP program.

I took the APEA predictor as a first assignment for my final 30 week course, and I scored a 65%. I feel sooo defeated.

I'm wondering what anyone's experience is for this? I have a friend who scored a 73 on theirs, but failed their boards. I have been studying Leik, FNP mastery, as well as the Fitzgerald beast book.

Anyone score below the 70% mark but still pass their exam? I am planning to test for the AANP. I definitely have the jitters like most FNP students. This program I have literally poured every waking moment of studying and question taking for the last 2.5 years... HALP!!

I have read about similar situations regarding the boards. A lot of people say they did OK on APEA and then failed boards. I have not received much instruction other than what I shared. It seems you basically pay for the course again and pay for a review class as well. So it seems like a very expensive problem to me.

at west coast university you do not pay for the course again.

Hi all,

I also went to WCU. When I repeated my term, I didn't have to do any more clinical hours, as I had already completed them. My professor at the time didn't require me to do a lot of assignments. I had to repeat all the APEA activities, including the weekly videos and tests. I think the work you have to do might be depending on your professor. My instructor with another instructor, had two weekly Zoom review sessions with us as well, which I was only able to attend twice, but it really helped. Yes, I also had to repeat the APEA live review, which was worthless to me. They can't expect everyone to benefit from the review sessions that lasted almost all day, with only a few 5, 10, and 15-minute breaks after powering through entire body systems, diagnoses, and pharmacology. Especially adult learners. I thought a company that charges so much money, and allegedly has high rates of success would understand how adult learners retain information, but no they do not. It's so frustrating, and I'm still very annoyed about it. After I graduated, WCU started a program where students who failed the first time could pick other review courses the school approved. They would pay or reimburse the student. Maybe ask them, if they are still doing that. I hope this helps, aside from my little tirade. LOL!

So WCU requires this as of now (they constantly are changing things and are prob one of the worst FNP programs out there and when someone decides to sue- I will be on board).

So pretty much what this poster said BUT the review course is after you repeat the term (no clinical hours but APEA work as mentioned). You do not pay for the class but pay to take APEA and have two chances. If you do not get a 70% the two additional chances and after your graduation date is post poned and you get two NP on your transcript- then you have 35 days to do one of the three reviews they mandate- you pay for it up front and then you are reimbursed after you show proof of completion. You take the APEA for the 5th and final time- pass or not you get your degree. With this school please, please, please get everything in writing.

I really appreciate all of the responses on here. It has been very helpful to me! I am still waiting to hear more information. I also found the two day review to be just senseless torture. I have been reading that people who did the in person APEA review received a booklet? Apparently the booklet was a great help to them for taking the test. I can't believe how ridiculous this test is! The worse part is that I have been reading that a lot of people feel the APEA is not a good predictor for how you do on the boards!

@discouraged1989 Thanks for your response. Did they give you instruction already? They do not allow another retake of exam? Also, graduation is on hold until pass I assume?

I assume graduation is on hold until you pass! I have not received instruction but other people on here have given valuable advice!

Has anyone who recently gone to WCU failed the APEA exam both times on the retake? I failed the 3 rd time. 67%. At least I'm getting closer but I wanted to k own what will happen if I fail a 4th time? Anyone know

@discouraged1989 honestly do not sweat it. After taking it the 3rd time and getting a 69 I was over APEA and the 4th time just spent 20 minutes on it (failed obviously), and I am now taking it for the 5th time on Monday (plan to spend 20 mins on again), and WCU will release my degree/diploma.

If you "fail" for the 4th time,  you get 35 days to take another prep course (theres three they offer through WCU - you will get notified of your options), you pay for it upfront, complete it, take APEA again and pass or fail youre done. You will also get reimbursed for the prep class once you turn in proof of completion.

After my third APEA exam, which tbh I know by the standards of other schools I would have passed with my scores in all three attempts, I took my focus away from passing APEA and focusing on boards. Good luck!

@disheartenednps

Thank you for the information. I have been sitting here stressing over this stupid test and now I'm at the point where I want to just be done. I don't blame you for not studying. It is crazy to me that the school is making this so difficult. I mean you basically passed with 69% and they still wanted you to take it again. I can't bring myself to study anymore and your right! I should just focus on studying for the boards! Thank you again for the information and your advice. Good luck on the boards! Post when you pass! It will give me Hope!

@discouraged1989

I mean our usernames say a ton about our experience with the school LOL, I scored in the yellow zone for all my attempts and by other schools that is a pass. Boards and knowing the material is what matters- good luck on your fourth attempt.

I will report when I pass- please do so too! Rooting for us both <3

Hello fellow FNPs,

I am taking the APEA pre predictor exam soon and was wondering if the questions are coming from the qbank? I've been answering a lot of practice tests to master the test taking strategy and of course to review, but im just curious whether the pre predictor exam itsef will be a different set of questions. I also go to WCU, and theyre making us take a pre predictor exam on week 3. We've only get to study the videos about Peds, hematology, GI, antibiotics,Pulmo and cardio. I just find it crazy to be answering questions with so little resources. I appreciate all your inputs 😁

Im currently in the WCU program, I scored 67 & 66 % on my APEA predictor exams. So they are going to make me do the re-take class. I am just confused in regards to graduation is it on hold until we score 70% in this test?
is anyone one on here on the same boat as me ? LOL

@frustrated94

I also go to WCU and I am in the same boat. Just took my 2nd APEA predictor today and got a 66% after studying my heart out for weeks! We still get to walk at graduation though. So at least we don't have to wait for that.
