Apartment hunting in St Louis area

U.S.A. Missouri

Published

My best friend is starting the Accel. BSN at BJC in May... we're heading to St Louis in two weeks to go apartment shopping but neither of us is very familiar with the area.

Anyone have any suggestions of apt properties and/or areas to look in/stay away from?

Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

The Creamery is going to be an Apartment residence that is located down the street from the medical campus. I've been searching online and it's part of a group of apt residences that are owned by frontdoorstl.com. I wanted to know if leaving my car was do-able. Thanks, now I have more things to think about.

Thanks, maggijo on the reply. What do you think about the area on Lindell? A friend also recommended the lofts on Washington Ave. I'm looking for somewhere that is moderately priced but safety would be a priority, too.

I heard the program was a good program. It's a big stretch from South Fla. but I'm ready for it. I had to switch my career path.

Can someone tell me about life in St. Louis and around the University?! I'm excited and a little nervous, too. (first time moving away from home :aln:) Any and all advice would be appreciated.

My advice about leaving your car would be to come down and see what you will have around you. Once you find some places you'd like to consider, come over and see what's around where you want to live. I'm sure you'll meet others who do have vehicles, so you could always catch a ride when they hit the grocery store or when the weather is bad, we're nice people, I dont see anyone turning you down or making you walk.

I am not real familiar with that part of town but I do know it's a nice place to live, nice places to visit and eat. I'm sure you'd be fine!

Hope that helps some, I believe most of the links I posted are about the CWE (central west end) which is around where you will be.

Blueberry Hill is one of my favorite places!! And although I miss St. Louis, I am certainly not missing all that cold weather. I was actually supposed to come back there for a visit this past weekend and had to postpone due to the terrible weather (I had layovers in Denver on both legs of the trip and was scared to death that I would be stranded if flights got cancelled). I was bummed, but I told my girlfriends "I'll just hang out here in my flip-flops and 60 degree weather until spring thaw." I have to make them jealous somehow since my housing costs won't exactly do the job! Ha ha! ;)

Oh, you are a BAD BAD person to post that today....and probably a pretty mean, nasty one, too!!

I hope that area gets one of its weird, seasonal frosts for a week or two!!

LOL! Mom told me tonight that not only did it reach 75 degrees there yesterday, but today they are predicting about 1 inch of ice on top of 4-9 inches of snow. CRAZY St. Louis weather, you have to love it! I'll keep my eye out for your curse of frost (we actually did get a few days of frost last winter, mid-thirties that did a lot of damage to our crops).

Ah, Sunday was absolutely beautiful, today, not so much. We're suppose to be getting 6-8 inches of snow today. I am so ready for summer!

Yeah, it's Tuesday night....clinicals this morning....normally a 30-minute commute from inside one building to the other.

This afternoon? 2 hours, 45 minutes....Big Bend was a mess; Manchester was a mess; 40 was closed; 44 was closed. How's a person to get WEST from the east?!?! They couldn't keep up with the snow and the roads were a disaster; cars in ditches like they belonged there!!

One of the worst I have seen in 15 years here, lol. But absolutely GORGEOUS once you're safe and sane in your home!!

I seriously don't want the crops ruined; ohmigosh, a head of lettuce (most likely from that region) is ridiculous $$$ and crummy to boot. I just wanted "she who is wearing flip flops in February" to get a taste of our misery, lol.

Take care!!

i would definitely check out dogtown and u city. i lived in u city while going to UMSL-college of nursing and loved having the metro link so close. however now umsl charges for a metro pass each semester (i dont know the current rate... $30-45? or if they offer it) but it saved me about $500-600 in gas around the time that gas prices started to really creep up. dogtown is great too, you have the luxury of having forest park and the zoo right across the street, plus if you have clinicals at barnes you dont have to wake up so early ;)

www.apartment-exchange.com

apartment exchange is a great company that i have rented with while in u city

www.byroncompany.com

is the one i use in dogtown!

hope this helps!!

I am a nurse at Barnes and I live on the Hill. I love it and it is cheaper than living in the central west end. Either place is good to move to though. PM me if you have any areas you have questions about and I can answer them for you. Good Luck with your search.

Can the Student Housing office at SLU help you?

something to consider - how will you travel around town? walk? private car? public bus? Where will you park a car?

Safety is a MAJOR concern. Please keep safe.

Try to live near SLU is my advice and do get information from SlU's office of Student Housing.

Best wishes on your new career.:yeah:

Oh, and there are many, many wonderful things about St. Louis - in spite of the humidity.:nuke:

You all have no idea how happy i am to have found allnurses.com, and this forum tonight! I am moving up to saint louis to go to stlcc at meramec this summer. I'm planning on moving by myself so i'm trying not to go too far over $500. Rent.com is helpful, except I don't know how long it is actually going to take me to get to school, and I am worried about being in a safe area. I'm a 22 year old female and I've never been without roommates, so it's a little scary! Not to mention the fact that I'm only scarcely familiar with the area.

You all seem to be so knowledgeable and happy to help! I love it! (What else would I expect from a bunch of nurses?) Does anyone have any suggestions of which areas to look around in or avoid due to safety or distance? Even better, does anyone have any specific apartment complexes to suggest?

My daughter lives in the southwest area of St. Louis County....the apartment complexes are Canyon Creek with The Vineyards located adjacent to it. She seems to feel safe there and likes it a lot. There is a mall nearby and lots of other shopping. I'd say it's 30 minutes max to Meramec. She pays $750 for a 2-bedroom. I don't know what a 1-bedroom would be or how that compares to other areas around STL. I'm sure you'll get some other recommendations!

Good luck!!
