Anyone work with a prima donna?

I do. One stated this morning, "Well, I don't do direct patient care anymore." The admin just said, "WHEN you are called into a room to do care, xyz." Twice. I have the same job and today showered a resident because the CNAs were feeding and delivering trays yada yada yada and I had a guy going out with his family who stank - he doesn't let us touch him much and on rounds this morning I told the aides if he refused to call me. Of course, the one who had him didn't. Family shows up to take him to a birthday party and after all the discussion (I'm on a med cart because someone called off) asked, "Can you give him one now?" "Yes." Locked up the cart, gave him the shower, the aide got him dressed because I got called to the phone for a family call, and I finished the pass.

You go.

My prima donna is our marketing director. ALWAYS fighting with her about what type of patients we can/can not accept. Had to try and explain to her that I wasn't being stubborn today when I said "No" to the guy with a positive AFB smear. (She is being lead to believe that SHE has the final say on admissions & unfortunately the ED tends to side with her - both non nurses). Took awhile to "educate" +AFB/TB/Negative air pressure room, etc. I still wouldn't be surprised if this guy shows up tomorrow :devil:

Did I mention that the HR leaked to me that this prima donna with no previous healthcare experience makes more $$ than me!

Must be dating the owner, LOL. Know what I mean? :yeah:

Yeah.....I worked with a Prima Donna too.....Our former DON who made sure everyone knew she had her Masters Degree.....Never came out of her office.....Never made Rounds....."Delegated" her Responsibilities to everyone else.....Did not/Could not deal with issues in the facility.....Could this be why she's in Trouble with State now?? :cool:

Yes, you are right there is a prima donna every where you work. I have worked as a DON for 15 years and I know the work from my end and from the floor nurses end. Unfortunately none of the work can be left for latter or for someone else. Patient care is a necessary and takes precident over everything else, including medication pass and then everything else is secondary. I give Kudos to the nurse who gave the patient a shower, but I also say you need to address with the CNA about that resident getting a shower at least weekly. Is the problem part of a careplan? Is the family aware of the problem? Oh, and as a DON yes, I have had people that tried to influence me but never attached at the hip. I tend to be very suspious especially of those who have tried to attach themself to me or give me gifts etc. Always be aware of those who do tried to sway you from doing your job and doing it corrently.

He gets a shower. He doesn't like anyone to help him with care and as a result he stinks in between. It wasn't his "day." I HAD told him that morning during rounds that he needed to let an aide help him because he smelled like a bear's behind.

Bear's behind? I'll have to use that.

As for the snarky comment, sheesh. When I was an aide and my administrator (in her Gucci heels) helped me shower a new admission, it was a big deal. If you're fortunate enough to find adminstration like that, you stick with them.

I understand your venting completely! Its hard to be in charge of a unit, you carry many hats and are expected to actually finish your own job in a timely manner. Seen and done it too many times!

I will always remember the RN student who was working on my floor who told me, "I'm not going to school to give bedpans and clean sh&%" (the call light of her patient was on and they needed toileting). I said, "Well now, ain't that something honey...you can just take your little backside and go sit down there in the conference room and file your nails for the rest of the shift...I certainly wouldn't want you to get sh&% underneath those pretty nails..." I told the DON and RN instructor that she was not to be assigned to my floor ever again....
