Anyone on the waiting list get a letter from San Diego City College?

Published

Hey Everyone!

I was just wondering if anyone on the waiting list for San Diego City College has gotten a letter of acceptance for Fall 2010. I'm in the 100's on the waiting list, so I'm getting pretty close, but since they're accepting 50% from the waiting list and 50% from the point system, it might take me a while longer to get accepted :crying2:. The admin at the nursing office told me that acceptance letters for those on the waiting list should be sent out towards the end of March, so I was just wondering if anyone has received a letter of acceptance or alternate? If so, what number were you on the waiting list??

Just being curious! :D

Have you asked about your current number lately? If you were #66 in Sept, you should be in by now.

Do I call/email ---- regarding my position on the waiting list? If not, please let me know whom.

And I don't think I'll be going this year since people have started or are starting their orientation already.

Yes, ---- is the person to talk to regarding your waitlist number. I sincerely hope you get in. I got on the waitlist in Jan of '08, so if you got in in March, you shouldn't be that far behind me. You still have the whole summer for a last minute chance. I've heard that many people drop at the last minute, mainly due to financial reasons. So hang in there. Have you thought about appyling at other colleges using the "multi-criteria" option. I know that Grossmont has openings in the Spring and Fall. I'm not sure about Southwestern, but I know that they are both pretty similar to the program at City. Just give ---- an email or call, and I'm sure that she'll let you know exactly where you are. Good Luck :)

Thank you for your response Rayni22. I got a response from her today, she said I'm 52 on the waiting list. I've decided City is the only school I'd like to apply to since I'm pretty close to getting in. SWC is where I did most of my prereq and they required I take a CNA course to apply for their ADN program. And I didn't want to do the CNA program due to financial reasons.

Do you know what the typical schedule is like for the ADN program? For example your class schedule for this coming Fall? I'm trying to decide if I can still work full-time or if I can at least fit in a part-time schedule. Do you know how much money is given if someone were to take out a school loan for the ADN program? And how many students are accepted each Fall?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Red 597,

Yes, we got an idea of our schedule for the Fall. It looks like we will be doing lab/clinicals twice a week, with 8 hr shifts. The other two days, we will have lecture for approx. 3 hrs a day. We are also required to take an online course on our own time. The D.O.N. suggested that you do not work (esp. full time) during the program. She said that the Nursing Program itself is like a full-time job, and if you want to succeed, she doesn't recommend working at all. I, myself, will be quitting my job, which is scary because I have two young children to support. I need to do my best though, and if quitting my job is the only way, I guess I'll have to. As far as loans, I'm not quite sure. I have applied for every grant possible, as well as the HRSA scholarship (I'm really hoping for that!). You should look into that. They pay for all of your classes/expenses, plus they give you a stipend monthly allowance of about 1,300.00 a month! The website is www.http://hrsa.gov just click on the link for "scholarships", scroll down to "Nursing Scholarship Program", and you'll get all of the info. Good Luck! I know you'll get in soon. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

To the San Diego City College new Class of 2013,

Congratulations and welcome to City College!!!:yeah: You all have worked very hard to get into nursing school and you finally made it!! I just completed my first year in the program at City College and I am excited to meet the new incoming class. I hope you all will enjoy the program and your experience at City College as much as I have. I am sure how tough you all have heard nursing school is and this is very true. You will be challenged, pushed to your limitssad.png, and maybe even wonder at times why you are doing it all. However, through the obstacles:crying2:, frustrations:confused:, and joyous :lol2:moments you will learn so much! It will be an amazing, humbling, and rewarding experience!

Take a little bit of time now to decide why exactly you have chosen to take the path of becoming a nurse:nurse:. Write it down if you think you will forget it. You will need to be able to remember this when times get tough throughout school, (and they can sure get tough:eek:) to get you through. Just remember you can do it!

The faculty at our school is great! We have a lot of great instructors that always keep their doors open for students whenever we need help. They really go out of their way to try to help you succeed. We also have a brand new building we get to attend classes at! Don't be afraid or hesitate to ask any of us second year students questions or for advice. As for myself, and I know there are others that feel the same way I do, we'd love to help you guys out in any way we can.:) Just walk up to us and introduce yourself if you see us around or in the elevators! Don't be shy! Hopefully we will get to meet a lot of you at Jump Start! ;)Feel free to let me know if you have any questions before school starts. I know last year there was so many things I wanted to know about starting nursing school!

Well, I just wanted to say congrats and welcome again! Your journey has just begun! May it be an awesome one! I am so excited for you guys! Try to enjoy the summer to the max and get lots of rest too. You're going to need to be nice and refreshed come August! See you soon! smile.pngGo class of 2013!!!

Hi Luv2Bake,

I'm a prospective future ADN student and was wondering what the general consensus is on jobs and assoc vs bach degree? Do most plan to carry on with a RN->BSN degree after? Can you tell us a little bit about clinicals, internships/externships?

Thanks much and congrats on being halfway done!

Thanks for the warm welcome luv2bake! I can't wait to start. It's a relief to know that second year students are so welcoming and available for support.

I'll definitely be at start up! I'm so excited! :yeah:

Hey Jens 2010, do you know the exact date(s) of the "Jump Start"? I need to let my work know. It will be during my last week of work.....I'm so excited! I just can't wait to start the program, I'm a little nervous though.

Hello All,

Congrats on getting in to City. It has been a long road, I know. I am a recent graduate from their program. To answer the previous question, most of my class is planning on returning to school for their BSN. During the fourth semester, this was stressed because of how the job market, especially San Diego, is today. Clinicals can be anywhere from all the Scripps, Kaiser, Paradise Valley, Balboa Naval, Rady's, UCSD and nursing homes. We did not really have many clinicals at any of the Sharps. Some people were able to do their preceptorship there, but it was very few. You can get an internship, but you have to apply to the hospital as well as sign up for the internship class. Some of my classmates did it and I think they only had to do one 12 hour shift a week. I wish I did it, but I had to work. Get all the experience you can right now. Good luck and always tell yourself that you can do it!

Rayn22 the jumpstart is Aug 15 & 16 from 9am-5pm.

Has anyone, who does NOT have health insurance, found an affordable place to get varcella and Hep B? I was able to get MMR, TB and T-dap for $10 at the local health clinic. But, they don't do varcella for adults and the cheapest I've been able to find is $100. Also Hep B is $80 x 3 = $260 total. Yikes!

Thank goodness I went to the orientation last year so that I was prepared to have to spend well over $1,500 (immunizations/physical w/BBC & UA/drug test & background ck/CPR/books) before even starting the program! I felt bad for the people who were freaking out this year.

Hey Jens 2010, I went to the "Beach Area Family Clinic" in Mission Beach and paid about $200 for everything: Physical, CBC, U/A, TB test, vaccines, and titers. As far as Varicella, I had chicken pox as a child, so I just asked them to run the titer (and it was positive thankfully). They told me the titer was a lot less expensive than the vaccine itself. I only had HepB and TDAP administered, the rest were run as titers. I was prepared to pay a lot more, so I was happy with the outcome. Yeah, it really sucks when you don't have health insurance!!!! If you have already had the disease and/or the vaccine, just ask them to run the titer. (It will be a lot less painful too -ouch!)Thanks for the info on the Jump Start, do you know what we will be doing there?????
