This is probably a weird post.... I am planning on starting to travel in January and have 2 cats. I'd like to bring them with me.... Obviously I know I'll have to plan on housing that allows them. I live in NJ and will most likely be travelling out to CA. I plan on driving. Has anyone else driven cross country with cats?!! I dont really know how they would handle it, or how I would for that matter. Like I guess youd have to sneak them into a hotel? What about setting up a litter box.... Im sure this sounds so crazy, but I really can't figure out the logistics of this! Do vets give out like kitty xanax or antianxiety meds for this sort of thing. Thanks!!

Well, it's now after the first of the year. I promised to provide feedback on travelling from KS to Calif w/ my 2 cats, Eddie and Pearl. They did great! I had a carrier for them, but they mostly hung out in the car. My car is just big enough for a covered litter box to fit on the floor in the back seat. Pearl, the shy one, sat mostly in the back window, fascinated with the scenery and big trucks. I had sedation for them just in case, but didn't need it.

Eddie took up residence on a quilt I had folded in the backseat. The only pet friendly hotel I could find in Gallup, NM was a nightmare! I think all 3 of us got fleas!!! We also hunkered down in a hotel for 2 days in the town of my current assignment until my apartment was available. Now we're settled down and very happy, except for the fact that we left a farm and now they have to be apt cats. Not many mice in a 2nd floor apt...

Thanks for the update Pearldora! I am glad to hear your kitties have settled in and the move wa manageable. My cat occasionally loves one of those catnip mouses, and for your duo, that will have to do for now :).

We traveled from St louis to west palm beach for an assigment. The first trip we took our cat meowed for the entire 16 hour drive. More she meowed the louder we turned the radio up...............Then amazing i found that some cats dont like music. Second trip we left radio off... She rode perfectly....Amazing what info you can find on the net!! lol

A suggestion. As a traveler (especially with pets), it pays to have AAAplus. Get one of those travel guides that lists motels/inns for the states that you are traveling through. It lists ratings and pet friendly locales. I have never been in a place that had fleas, by using it.

Get them a turbo scratcher. The little ball may keep them busy.

Motels/Inns seem to becoming more and more pet friendly. I just traveled across country with my two pit bulls. We were on the road for 5 days one way and didn't have any problems never one. Usually we had to pay 10 dollars xtra a nite but a lot just said "If they don't bark or bother anyone we won't charge you for your pets".......One place said "Only if you let me get a pitty kisses"....not a problem with my lickers.

I travel with two cats also. I was really nervous because usually they both hate the car, but I got some sedatives from my vet & they both did great! They also gave me a couple suggestions which I found helpful. I bought two carriers of the same size, and bought 6 disposable cat litter pans... (I went from Ohio to Arizona & 4 did the trick) I put a cat litter pan in one of the carriers and a nice blanket in the other for my girls. Whenever I had to stop I could easily put the carriers together (with the doors taken off) so that my girls had their bathroom & bed connected, I found this helpful so they didnt try to jump out of the car when I stopped for gas. I was also lucky enough to find a travel pet food carrier from Cracker Barrel of all places (which by the way you can rent books on tape from & return the next time you stop) that held their food and water. You can find them online if you look. Good luck, hope this was helpful & if you have any other questions let me know!

I'm not a nurse but traveled from MA to AZ with a poodle and a cat. No problem at all. I guess it all depends on your pet's personalities.

Motel 6 studios are excellent with pets. There is a small fee but usually you get it back.

Good luck
