I just finished reading the thread about rn's who hopelessly HATE being nurses. I am currently busting my butt trying to get into nursing school. It's really discouraging to people in my position. It makes me second guess my choice. I Have wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. I've worked in a few different fields. They ALL have crappy politics, back stabbers, too much work, not enough people, and jerk bosses. I totally understand that nursing is not for everyone. I'm also sure alot of people reading this will think I have no stand in this since I haven't worked as a nurse yet. It would be nice to hear that someone out there enjoys their work. :uhoh21:
I'm a nursing student and I've heard the horror stories too.
My informal advisor is a retired nurse and nurse educator. She says that how much you like your job depends alot upon where you work. She loved ER, L&D, and Public Health, but hated working in the OR or MedSurg. She also notes that many times poor management is what is to blame for bad experiences.
Anyway, I have said before, I am a neonatal midwife, absolutely adore what I do, love the job and the babies with a passion!
But, My Mum is currently in hospital, in a surgical mixed ward.
Her Nurses are FAB!, from the boss to the nursing assistants, all are equally caring and attentive, and so soo busy!
Myself, I dont think I could love nursing as much if I did their job, the stuff they face would make me heave. I have such admiration for them, and the way they are nursing my mum is outstanding. Honestly, cant praise them enough. But me..give me a 23 weeker, a 30 weeker...even a term babe with problems and I'm as fulfilled in my job as I could ever be!
so, I guess, once everyone finds their ideal nursing post, THATS the job you will like, enjoy, LOVE! :monkeydance:
Love being a Nurse, Hate the politics that go along with it. As you said though, your going to have pro's & con's anywhere you go. The person who hates his/her job needs to change thier own situation if at all possible. Do not be discouraged. Best wishes to you concerning your schooling, and do not let a few that are unhappy color your world.
I love being a nurse. Floor nursing wasn't for me, but I have been working as a school nurse and love it. I agree with others who stated there are so many options in nursing. I enjoy knowing my work has a purpose, I can sleep at night. That is one of the many reasons I love being a nurse.

I LOVE every aspect of my job!
PLEASE don't be discouraged by what you read here. I am a new grad, and just finished my second night on the unit. I love what I do, but today was a very stressful day for me. This does not mean that I will quit, or hate my job, but today really sucked. I met a nurse the other day who has been in the field 20+ years. She asked me howI liked it, and my reply was the same...I love it. She just looked at me and smiled and said "Just wait till you have been doing it for 20 years." I see this kind of attitude frequently in nursing. It is true that we have very difficult jobs, but to me that is part of the challenge. Every time I meet a nurse who says something similar to me, it just motivates me that much more NOT to have that kind of mentality. That does not mean that everything is wonderful all the time, and if you get into nursing school, you will find this out. Because of this stress, venting and sharing the bad as well as the good is vital to your own emotional well being, and not necessarily hating what you do.

I love my job, and for the most part I love where I work. Anywhere you have imperfect humans working together you have an imperfect workplace (that would be, uh, everywhere!!). But I can't imagine doing anything else. I enjoy doing what I do. It gets crazy and sometimes when I leave I don't want to come back. But when I wake up the next evening (nightshift) I'm ready for more. :)
A lot of the threads on here are venting threads. There is good stuff on here too. Please take the venting as just that, and good luck!
