I am finishing up my pre-req's and would love to see if anyone is in the same boat as I am or even in nursing school. Any advice would be much appreciated!
no1seezmenow - I think you have to look at it a bit differently. We don't know actual numbers, such as how many people take the test. But if we did, that might help. So for instance, let's say 10,000 people take the test. You score an 88, which puts you in the 97th percentile, ergo, you did better than 9,700 people. That leaves 300 people like you. So you have to further break those 300 people down. Are most of them going to PHCC? No probably not, but there could be a fair amount, say 20. 280 others might be applying for BSN programs or other super-competitive cc. And I believe that PHCC is a super competitive cc. I think I heard about 500-600 people apply each semester for 48 seats. That means only 8-10% of people get in. So you would be competing against those 20 who were in the 97th percetile and then the rest of us who are sliding in under the 90% (or 96th percentile)bar! Sounds confusing, even just typing it out. But I think it's pretty accurate, if not disheartening.
Who wants to hear my mathematical theory on how they are going to rank us? Now, this is only a theory since I love algebra and statistics, so don't take this for truth. Remember, MAX points for a perfect TEAS is 50 (50%), max points for perfect GPA is 45 (45%) and max points for living in county is 5 (5%) (which is pretty much a "must"), for a total possible 100 (100%) points. Here goes:
Person A:
*GPA 4.0
*TEAS 78
*In-county Yes
Person A would get all 45 points for a perfect GPA, 39 points for the TEAS (78 / 2 since TEAS is worth 50% or half of total points) and 5points for living in county. For a total of 89 points (45+39+5)
Person B
*GPA 3.4
*TEAS 90
*In-county Yes
Person B would get 38 points for GPA (cross multiply 3.4/4.0 = x/45), 45 points for TEAS (90/2) and 5 points for living in county. For a total of 88 points.
So you can see how someone who has a high GPA but mid range TEAS can still mathematically almost equal someone who has a good TEAS but lower GPA. Hence why I was hoping to really knock the TEAS out of the park.
NOW, where you stand mathematically as compared to others (i.e. are there 100 people with 89s? 2 people with 89s?) is the real question. What do you think about my theory???
Chris99mu, WOW:yeah:!! Thanks for that statistical equation...and, of course, adding to my OCD about getting accepted! My score would be 91.4 based on the equation you used. Now, of course, it also depends on how they score. I've done a lot of googling; a few schools have statistical info. listed as to acceptances over the last few years and the average GPA and TEAS test score for acceptance into their program. This is the first yeay, though, PHC is using the TEAS, so there's not any comparative data. But some schools break down the GPA and TEAS score weights into another point system. For example, some schools break down the GPA into 3.9-4.0=15 points, 3.8-3.9=8 points, 3.7-3.8=3 points, etc...and some break down like this: 3.5-4.0=15 points, 3.0-3.5=10 points, etc. I guess this still all depends on how many people apply, and comparatively what their scores are. By the way, I am applying to the bridge program, so I believe there are 72 seats (36 in West and 36 in North) available. Well, I just have to pull my hair out for two more months before I know anything!!
Chris99mu, I "heard" that the bridge used to be a lot easier to get accepted, however, nursing has become so much more competitive that I really don't know what the case is anymore. I graduated from PHCC with my LPN as well; I would probably look ahead, take micro this summer (it is a prereq) and apply to the LPN and the RN programs. You have to take micro regardless of the RN program, so it's just one more class you don't have to worry about while concentrating on the nursing classes and clinicals when you're in the program. I'm taking Ethics this summer with hopes of being accepted for August. All my general classes are out of the way. I'll also be working full time when going to school.
Whoa, I love your theory :) I am sure you'll do just fine on the TEAS! I luckily have a 4.0 on my prereqs, but got a 78 on my composite TEAS score which I guess isn't too great. I didn't study the first time around and it's been a LONG time since I have taken math and science classes, so I was definitely unprepared the first time around. I am retaking it next week and I'm hoping to increase my score. I hear that they're only taking 24 people for the fall program, so until I know one way or another, I will be obsessing over this!!!
They are taking 24 students for the West campus and 24 for the North campus for a total of 48 seats in the Fall. I will have a 4.0 at the end of the term and I got an 86.5 as my composite TEAS score. I think I will be retaking it on Wednesday... I want to get in the 90's but I haven't studied since I took it last time!
I retook the TEAS and got an 88.2% adjusted individual score. I did no additional studying in between tests and this time just relaxed... I can't believe I scord higher like that! Anyway, here is my breakdown:
Adjusted Individual Total Score: 88.2%
Mean - National: 72.8%
Mean - Program: 74.0%
Percentile Rank - National: 97
Recentile Rank - Program: 97
Reading: 100%
Math: 84.4%
Science: 83.3%
English 85.5%
I also put in my application to the RN program... Now begins the 2 months of waiting!
Ok everyone I am currently a RN student at PHCC. I just completed my second semester and will be starting maternal-child in the Fall. I am sort of bored this summer and just noticed the questions. Sorry for the delay, I have been busy during the semester. So lets see
I got in first time with 4.0 GPA, 78 composite on the NET (89 Reading Comp), and a Hernando County resident
I attended East Campus for my first and second semesters. Third is only offered at West so I will be there in the Fall.
Classes for the RN program are day time only. 1st and 2nd semester is T + W 9a-4p, Clinical R + F 7a-2p
3rd + 4th Semester is M + T clinical (times vary), W + R class 9a-2:30p
Several peers worked part time. Only 1 full time.
Advice when you get accepted and receive the info packet purchase at least the Fundamentals book right away and study your physical assessment and practice at home, because you will be tossed into a room with a patient on your 2nd day of clinical! Also work ahead where possible. Don't let the first day scare you off (it gets better). Any other questions let me know!

Which version of the TEAS did you take? I'm interested in scores/percentile rankings for the various versions.
Thanks
