Is there anyone else out there who is currently studying for the CCRN exam and would like to start a thread as perhaps a study and support group? I have just applied for the exam and have not yet set a date, but about in 3 months is when I will be taking it. I would love to be in communication with others in the same boat! I hope there is at least one other nurse out there! Thanks!

Here are some "Dawn" pearls to share: (also helps me remember them to reiterate them in another form)!!

-P mitrale (think p wave and mitral valve) =notched p wave

-aortic regurg=wide pulse pressure

-mitral regurg=narrow pulse pressure

-if you are going to enterally feed someone with pancreatits, make sure the tube is placed in the jejunum; if in the duodenum, would stim release of pancreatic enzymes

-intrapulmonary shunt=lung issue (Ards, pneumonia)

-dead space=vasculature issue (PE)

-mitral stenosis heard best with the bell

-Prinzmetal's angina shows ST elevation with pain

-anaphylactoid reaction=no previous exposure to antigen

-anaphylaxis=precious exposure to antingen and is igE mediated

-Broca's aphasia= expressive aphasia

-Wernicke's aphasia=receptive aphasia (note er in Wernickes and re in receptive)

-strep=rust colored sputum

-pseudomonas=green colored sputum

-staph=pink colored sputum

OK those are my pearls for now!!! Hey I am testing better on Dennison. I want to nail that sucker!!!! hehehe

Dawn, sounds like you are doing awesome!! Do you take the test tomorrow!? GOOD LUCK if you are!!

I've been taking those 10 question quizzes every night, mostly cardiac and respiratory and now I've dipped a little into GI...a lot of liver failure questions and BOY do we see a lot of them here in the MICU!! More than I would care to see.

Good luck to everyone else studying!!

P.S. I was sitting out at the nurses desk today and two of our senior nurses (who are CCRN certified) were talking about trying to increase the # of people on our unit that are certified, and what ways would help to increase these numbers. Because right now there is only a one time/year bonus of $400 for being certified, and you can't even get it written on your badge!!! And they also said that in the past they wanted to recognize some place ON the unit the people who are certified, but our management council nixed this idea because it would make others feel bad, instead of get them to go out and get certified. It's sad, I can't even have it recognized by my hospital on my badge :(

Hey ElizabethJ!!!

Waaah Waaah Waaah!! Make the other underachiever nurses feel bad! What a crock!! You should see if you can get that changed!! How is the house hunting going??

If I pass, I will send you my Dr Laura DVD's for you to borrow until after your exam!! Will I see you at that Dr Laura talk in October?? You could return them then... Hey, I trust you, you are a fellow Minnesotan!!! Email me your address if I pass and I'll mail them out right away. I am telling you, it is sooo worth it....she is a hoot!!

Studying is going OK, I am VERY distractable today...like I said, I don't like this kind of studying...dang, I start that statistics class the end of August, so I'd better get used to it!!

Thanks for the good wishes...I did buy a red shirt to wear for the exam, because Dr Laura said to wear red or yellow!!! I am supposed to have an attitude tomorrow as well!! The more irritated I am the more easy it is to retrieve info, so I'll have to work on that too!!!

hehehe

OK my fellow CCRNers!

What a royal pain in the patootey!!

Why do nurses feel the need to **** with each other??? I don't understand the 25 unanswerable questions? Why would anyone want to do that to anyone else??? OK I was prepared for them, I thought, but it was still very disconcerting...because you think to yourself is this one of those unanswerable questions or not!!

Here are my scores:

Cardiovascular 93%

Pulmonary 67% (eeeeoooow)

Endocrine 100%

Hem/Imm 80%

Neurology 67%

GI 100%

Renal 100%

Multi 80%

Prof/synergy 84%

Overall: 85%

OK, as you know I spent the weekend focusing on CV and Pulm and blech look what happened to Pulmonary?? Nothing!! The pulmonary questions on my test were HARD! and none of the review systems I have prepared me adequately for those questions. I would spend time reading in detail on the major pulm disorders, because where some of those picky little questions came from, I couldn't tell ya!!

Hemodynamics (on my test), were easy and straight forward.

I don't know what happened to neuro ... because to be honest I don't remember much about those questions... nothing really jumps out at me as to whether our review materials were adequate or not...since I didn't spend a lot of time on that area recently.

It took me about 45 minutes to do the test. I am a very fast test taker (always have been). My philosophy on test taking is the "SABER TOOTH TIGER approach" you see your possible prey and you jump on the right one, sink your teeth in and never (rarely) ever let go!!! It is that primal, go for the jugular approach... hehehe

I like being aggressive when I test and as Dr Laura says "annoyed' it helps with the recall!!!!

Well, now I am interested to see what the response will be at work, I work tonight, (poor planning on my part) I certainly am not going to go around and announce it to the world (much). It will take a while for people to find out.

I am not leaving this thread... I will be here. I am going to look into the CNRN...and start my stats class next week. (math and I don't get along real well!!!)
