Anyone from Daytona Beach Community College

Has anyone appied and been accepted into the RN program at DBCC? If so what was your GPA? How were your NET scores?

I used everything but some of my classmates said their instructors wouldn't let them open the packages. It's a whole lot easier to insert with lube. Did you guys do bed baths and HPS?

We did not open the stuff to do it, just pretended like we did in class, I think they didn't want to have to clean up .

We didn't do bedbath or HSP, we have been doing MEDS all this week and hopefully we will practice some more tomorrow.

So for pharmacology do you guys have three prototypes to remember? I am just trying to make sure I am not forgetting anything.

Yes, we did HPS and bedbaths today. The HPS activity was pretty cool. The simulation patient was really neat to work with and I can't wait to work with it more as our skill sets and confidence increase. Ms. Miner is awesome too!! Her energy is contagious and she really got many of the quieter people in our class out of their shells. Bed baths, eh... guess it depended on who your partner was. It seemed like mine couldn't remember how to do anything and wasn't very interested in doing things properly. I feel for her patients down the road.

In our pharmacology book we have only covered a handful:

Fluoroquinolones, Sulfonamides, and UTI meds (Trimethoprim, Methamine, Nitrofurantoin, and Phenazopyridine)

Is anyone going to the skills lab on Saturday?

Probably not. I work overnight weekends and those things are so hard to motivate myself to go to...

I understand that!

I am only going because I don't feel we have received enought guidance on med pass otherwise I would be staying home.

I agree. I think there was quite a bit thrown at us on the original medpass instruction day. It was really hard to take notes while participating in the hands on learning part as well. Consequently, when I sat down to start studying overnight I found I had many questions and ended up googling solutions. I can memorize the syringe sizes and locations to give injections, but theres definitely more to it than that. I plan to practice at home on fruit to work on my technique (don't laugh... a nurse at work suggested it).

I was talking with my aunt (who just graduated a different school a few years back) and her school did an awesome thing with all of their skills. You know how when we are being taught skills and different lab instructors come around and show us different ways of doing things and often contradict what the other instructors have said. (I know with catheters it had my class beyond frustrated that none of our instructors were on the same page. We understand there are different ways of doing things, but when we are first learning many need a standardized step-by-step approach before personalizing our techniques.) When I was venting my frustration about it to her she said her clinical skills were taught in class and also were available on dvd (someone in class videotaped the main instructor demonstrating). I think it would be awesome if DSC would make one DVD per semester with all the skills being demonstrated and either have it available for purchase or let us bring in a dvd for them to burn to. Just an idea.

HEY DSC, IF YOU READ THIS, THINK ABOUT THE EXTRA OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE $$$$$!!!!

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, I was just curious. I guess I should back up, and explain why I'm asking. We were talking to on of the evening clinical instructors and she was saying that 30 people in a night class is a large amount. She stated that if all 30 of us went on to 2nd semester, we might be alright but they did not have enough clinical locations and/or instructors for summer, 3rd, and 4th sememters at nights. So basically they were banking on at least 10 of us not passing this semester. Didn't instill a lot of confidence in me. So in the back of my mind I wonder if they 'pick' on certain people they think might not be able to handle the stress. So my question is, have you guys lost anyone in your classes? We lost 3. 1 girl had to quite because her son was diagnosed with something that could be terminal, another girl just transferred to days in NSB, but we actually lost a girl who failed something 3 times. Anyone expiriencing this in there class?

We lost one person due to background check problems. We have quite a few that have gone to 3x on skills but they've all passed so far. I know it seems discouraging, but do the best you can! I think it's pretty obvious by now(atleast in my class) who will or will not pass.

as a 4th semester student, yes, some people will not continue in the program. i had a few fellow classmates fail 1st semester and never reapply. they realized nursing was not for them. also, people need to drop out of the program for whatever reason, which is sad! i guess they aren't as determined as some of us. =)

i graduate in 9 weeks!!!!!

passed med pass! on to clinicals!
