Anyone from Baker College? Say hello!!!

Published

Just wanting to get all of the Baker College students together, just to say "hey". Much love to all of you.:redbeathe

Hi mrsrlg,

From my experience it would be very beneficial to have a lot of team spirit in this program. Unfortunately we did not have that, which was disappointing although not unusual in a nursing program. Some students do bond very tightly and help each other out, I hope that will be your experience. I studied by myself and did fine, some find group study to be helpful. It depends on each persons needs. The nursing guild is work, there are fund raisers, etc... to be organized and carried out on top of your regular studies. I was very disappointed in the lack of participation in our class, it made it very difficult as a few of us always had to be the people organizing and showing up to sell etc... Like I said earlier I hope that everyone will be enthusiastic and willing to help out whenever it is needed. Otherwise the few that do participate will end up doing it all.

I agree with you, adn44. When you're going to be with a group for a year, it will go far smoother if everyone gets along and works together, but this board has shown me that this is not always the case (LOVE allnurses for all the insight...lol). I'm the type that will help anybody I can, if I can. No, I will not tell the answers or spend exhaustive amounts of time, etc., but I certainly will encourage anyone or give them a correct direction, if I know it. I'll also do my best to include those who are left out. I'm not a clique person and am quite happy to work by myself or in a group if a group project, but I do study better on my own. I study by rewriting, retyping, organizing, creating something I can see that makes it more understandable, and just talking and quizzing each other doesn't work for me; I won't retain anything much that I've heard. Sad, but true...lol, but it does not mean I'm not a team player. As for the nursing guild, well I'm a contractor and need to be home if I ever want to get any work (and I will need to work), so while I'll definitely help out with some of the things, it won't be every thing. I'm a good organizer, but also terribly detail-oriented, which means TIME that I won't have...LOL. If I'm accepted, I hope our class is at least cordial to each other - a year is a long time. I see the class BS in one of my classes and it makes me cringe. Hello people...we're adults here! I will keep duct tape in my bag for those times when I need to bite my tongue, which may be often. LOL Thanks for all the insight! I'm sorry to hear how your program was, but you made it through and that is what's important. If I'm accepted, I will be thinking about the things you and others have said here and it will be helpful for sure! :)

Hi everyone !! I'm at CT and will be applying in Fall for the 2010 Spring term RN program. I just found this site a couple of days ago and man !! if I wasn't anxious before, I sure am now after reading all the posts about the entrance score cut-offs from the last few batches !! I've actually lost sleep over it. :banghead: Guess it's time to start looking at other options (at least as back-ups). My grades are good, but who knows what will happen with the NET.

Just talked with HFCC today --- 18 to 24 month wait list. Gonna go to the info meeting at MCC next week and plan to take the HESI and submit for their Fall 2010 program. SC4 is a bit far (50 miles), but it may be an option. Unfortunately, I'm on a bit of a time crunch -- I'm trying to use NWLB funds which means I have to start the Nursing track in 2010.

I'd really like to stay at Baker. The school really is a good fit for me. I got my AAS in Computer Science there back in 2001. I'll admit the classes are a bit more expensive, but I like the class sizes, the location, the fact that each quarter is only 10 weeks, and the fact that the instructors have worked in the field they teach.

on a side note... for those of you out there that think that 10 week quarters means Baker is easier or that you don't learn as much, you couldn't be more mistaken !! We're in class for 4 hours a week, unlike the other schools that only do 3 hours a week and we are required to learn the same material ( I'm so tired of the disparaging remarks from non-Baker people ... sorry, had to vent)

Anyhow, I'm at AH on Mon and Wed and CT Tech CTR on Tues and Fri. I'm doing AP I and Micro right now if anyone wants a study buddy. I'm taking AP II and Psyc this summer .... anyone else doing summer classes?

Good luck to you all !!

Hi awhitt001! :)

It sounds like you're doing everything you can to get a spot, but it definitely is a struggle to get in. I'm not even bothering pursuing an RN. I guess I may rethink that after I see what my HESI score is in June, but there is just sooooo much competition. While I'm competitive, somewhat, by nature, this is not the situation when I would like to compete...lol. Anyhow, I'm fine with starting with LPN and bridging from there. There still may be 100+ applying for 30 spots in June, but at least it is not the hundreds that apply for the RN programs.

Anyhow, I completely understand how scary it is. Your science classes are really important, so I wish you a lot of luck with those! I'm just finishing up my last pre-req, A&P II, and I'm soooooo ready for summer. This will be the first break from school for me in two years, and I find it hard waiting out the rest of the quarter now...lol. However, quarter end still leaves me with the my application package and HESI test, but then blissful freedom for a couple of months, or sad/what the heck am I going to do now freedom if not accepted. LOL

I believe Flint also has an RN program, but I'm sure there is no less of a demand there and the drive is far, but it is another option. There is also OCC.

Don't let your worry overtake your studies. I've been there, obsessing, and then realized it was pulling my concentration away from where it needed to be, which was in class, so I got a grip and moved on. I completely understand it, but just do your best at getting the best grades you can in your pre-reqs and you'll be well on your way.

Wishing you much good luck!! :)

MRSRLG.... Thanks for the encouragement. I'm going have to work on reminding myself to just do the best I can or I'll drive myself nuts. You've got good advise. :redbeathe

You're so welcome, Awhitt001! I swear it is the hardest thing sometimes, to stay encouraged that is. I try and stay positive and be positive in my posts. I've had many who have done the same with me and it helps. I'm not one of those happy go lucky, super optimistic types; I consider myself a realist (aka a bit more of a pessimist) LOL, but I have really, really tried during the last 6-7 months. I think the competition with oneself to get A's all the time takes away from the classes. For spring, I've mellowed. The only thing I tell myself now is that it is mine to lose, which just reinforces that if I don't apply myself to classes (and soon to the HESI), I could lose my chance, so I make sure I get the stuff done that I need to and study and know what I have to. Anyhow, it will consume you if you let it, so do whatever you can to give yourself a break. Hey, not sure where you are, but I'm THRILLED that spring has finally come to Michigan. It is in the 80s today and absolutely gorgeous. That alone gives me energy and hope :loveya:

MRSLRG --- Oh I agree. Today was beautiful !! (I'm in Sterling Heights.)

Although I will be taking classes during the summer, I am taking full advantage of the break between terms to do some planting. I'm putting in some flowers and a few veggies. I LOVE gardening and look forward to studying outside. I used to do that many, MANY years ago when I was in the service -- I find it very relaxing.

Gotta do what works, right? :flwrhrts:

LOL Well, your weather should have been exactly like mine then; I'm in Shelby lol.

Studying outside in the sun sounds like an excellent idea. I have this huge backyard and find nothing more peaceful than lying on my chaise listening to and watching the birds :). I work at home on the computer, and I was an online student last summer, so I was always inside on the computer. I'm sure my neighbors wondered if I was still alive over that year and a half because I never left the house. LOL However, since January I have gone to school on-campus and now I'm always on the go...I look forward to hanging at home this summer. :) I picked up a few things today, a couple of hanging plants and a few for pots, but still need some perennials and such. I don't veggie garden, but like to look at the flowers. I have a half acre, so there is a lot of work. Otherwise, about 50 magazines to catch up on, many books to read, and I joined this swap thing, where I and others swap our books/DVDs and such (direct trade, no cash), so I'm trading a bunch now to give me a fresh supply of movies to catch up on. YAY, I'm soooo looking forward to all that freedom to do what I want. LOL

Anyhow, it sounds like you have a great plan. Hopefully, we will have many, many days like today!! :yeah:

Has anyone retaken a class and still got into the nursing program??

Is a BSN available at baker?

supposedly the bsn will be available come fall, but then again they said it would be ready for this spring. once you finish the rn and get your license you can start the bsn (minus core education). they say once they get the program in place you can start the core education credits, but only 12 credits or you have to switch out of nursing to one of the other bachelors programs that have the same core ed in it and then switch back to nursing.

i am not sure about the repeat but here are the ranges of the last 3 application period per the nursing department, these are for the last couple of people in the 40 accepted. a repeat is minus 1 point off of your total point score so you may get a better idea of where you stand. remember if you do not get in your first try you are given an extra point for the second application.

points and net score for last people accepted out of the 40 for each application period:

spring 2008

point range: 20.6 - 20.7

net range: 60 - 65

fall 2008

point range: 22.6 - 22.7

net range: 70 – 75

spring 2009

point range: 23.2 to 23.3

thanks Shannonmarie7!

It looks like the point range keeps climbing

I will be retaking A & P this fall. I had a tough instructor.

Good luck to us all!!!!

My first name is Kim and i wouldn't mind having someone to study with on occasion if you are interested. i am usually at Baker on T/TH from 9-2:40

Hi Kim, I just joined this site and haven't had time to review how to properly respond to posts. However, I was reviewing a lot of posts, and was excited to see many of you in the same situation. Are you in the flint campus? If so, if you have room for one more study person, I would love to meet with all of you and study for the Hesi. Thanks! :)

I am anxious to meet asap due to the summer load I have coming up. :loveya:
