Good I'm glad to hear positive things about LIU's nursing program since I am scheduled to start the professional phase next fall. Two good friends of mine graduated a few years ago with no complaints. Anyway, I am looking forward to starting next year!

Yea, that tuition is a killer, but I try to use it as a motivater NOT to fail any classes since it would be money down the drain. The nursing students in their LIU clinical uniforms walking around campus also motivates me. We are almost there!

I just graduated from LIU and I have no idea what you are talking about. I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinions but I have to disagree. I absolutely loved the professors they were nurturing and offered much guidance. I was not an A student either. It was definitely rough but what Nursing School isnt and from what I hear all of ous have passed the Nclex so far. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LIU SON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry but LIU has had one of the poorest track records for their nursing graduates passing the NYS board. It was that way when I attended, it remained that way in the 80's and 90's. While my public health clinical experience was excellent, it wasn't because of the instructors. I started at LIU in 1964. I took liberal arts classes that were paid for by the NYSDMH. Most of the professors were excellent. And none of the courses were dummied down for nursing students. When I went back for my BSN several years later, there was Physics for Nurses, Biology that was a joke, the only saving grace for their science department was my Chemistry and Microbiology professors. They have both since retired.
Sorry but I use to come into LIU once a week between 2000 and 2003. The students had not improved much since I had last visited LIU. And I visited a website that has students grading their professors. The nursing department is not generally receiving high grades from their students.
Enough said.

I went to LIU (the Brooklyn Campus) and I was in the nursing program and it was horrible! It has one of the worst track records for nurses passing the NCLEX and one of the professors there warned me to get out before I wasted all my money. He said they were at risk of losing their accreditation, which they had lost for a brief period already, and they have one of the lousiest nursing programs in NY. Thank God for that professor! I have to agree that the professors there are not supportive and I didn't like it at all.
I am now at Nassau Community College which is waaaaaaayyyyyyyy cheaper and a million times better as far as nursing programs go. They have a 100% passing rate on the NCLEX. I would never recommend for anyone to go to LIU in Brooklyn. I don't know about the one in LI.

Like an earlier post stated it all boils down to personal opinion. I agree they had their issues in the past. I dont know exactly what it was because I have heard so many things flying around. LIU has revamped their whole nursing program and no like I said in my previous post it was not easy but nursing is not easy. They have implemented the Hesi exam after each semester in addition to taking a medmath test every semester they administer three and if you dont pass ;you dont move on to the next level but the exams are fair. I feel like they bend over backwards to help their students they have remedial classes for the Hesi and they also offer med math classess. You have to go speak to the advisor for yourself and ask what has been the passing rate for the last year or two because they have gone through a real transformation. I definitely recommend LIU. At this point I just started NYPH-Columbia and Nursing School is nothing compared to the real world of Nursing I feel so lost like everything they taught me is down the drain. Yes school was hard but this is no joke. I do believe I gained a great Nursing eduction from LIU but that is just the starting point. LIU grad 2007 w/ no regrets except the cost LOL:nurse:
Hi, what years were you in the program and how can I find out about pass rates?

You know what's funny? From reading previous posts of yours, it seems that you have a lot to say about LIU's nursing program, yet you have NEVER taken a single NURSING class at LIU . Correct me if I'm wrong, but my interpretation of your posts is that you left the school while still in the pre-requisite phase of the program.
I just find it unbelievable that someone can have so much to say about something that they have never even experienced.
I, like Keishahu, just graduated from the program, and my experience was nothing but positive. I was well taught and prepared by the nursing professors, and I never had any trouble passing any HESI exam nor did I have any difficulty passing the NCLEX. As Keishahu mentioned in a previous post, our class actually seems to be kicking some NCLEX a**! Additionally, we've landed jobs at some of NYC's top hospitals. LIU SON!

Hi, I'm sorry if I offended you. I am simply stating an opinion, which is what a public forum is for... And I can agree to disagree. Not everyone is going to have the same opinion as me and not everyone will agree with my opinion.
The school left a really bad taste in my mouth. I have no problem giving praise where it is due. Maybe they have revamped their program and if that's the case, good for them! At the time when I was there (2004-2005), it had a terrible reputation which I didn't hear about until after I was in the Nursing program. I was accepted into the nursing program and yes I left before I started the nursing classes but I had plenty of interactions with the nursing department and the nursing faculty because I was in the program.
My experience was that the nursing staff was very disorganized, not willing to answer questions and one person would say one thing and then the next person would say something else. First of all, when I was accepted into the school, they accepted me into the evening nursing program. The nursing counselor told me it was a 2 year evening program. She looked over my transcripts and advised me what classes I needed to take to finish the pre-reqs and start the nursing clinical phase in the Fall. I took these over the summer. Then I went to be advised and register for classes before the start of the fall semester and they told me that first of all, the evening clinical portion of the program was 3 years (the day clinical portion was 2) and that I still needed an English class so I couldn't start this semester! Why didn't they tell me that at my first advising session? And I was exempt from the English class because I had scored high enough on the placement test which is why the first counselor said it was ok but now this one was telling me I couldn't start in the Fall. I would have taken it over the summer with the Physiology class I took if they had done their job instead of trying to hurry up and get me out of their office! That wasn't even it - sure it sucked and I was practically in tears but I was still going to deal with it. Every time I tried to call to get info no one would call me back, and when I would show up and meet with someone she would tell me something completely different than the next person, etc... but they still weren't allowing me to register for the Fall. So not only was I going to have to spend extra money for an English class (These classes aren't cheap and they wouldn't let me take it with the other nursing classes so it could at least be included with the full time tuition), but I had just found out that I would have to pay for another year of school too because they now told me it would take 3 more years to get the degree. I was still going to stay with the school.
Then one day when I was going into my Physiology class, a professor asked me what my major was. I told him nursing and he asked me "Why would you come to this school for nursing? Don't you know they are in danger of loosing their accreditation? Without that you can't get sit for the NCLEX and get your license. And they had already lost it once before. Their passing rate is really low too." Soooo, that's when I tried to again get some info from the nursing department and they never got back to me - It was like pulling teeth to get information. I also spoke to some of the nursing students who were presently in the clinical phase and they told me they pretty much had to teach themselves and it wasn't a good program. That's when I decided to get out and not waste all that money.
Now, it is very possible that they revamped the school - maybe they got rid of that staff in the nursing department that didn't know what they were doing because I know a lot of people had complaints. My professors even told me to go to the Provost of the school and let them know what had happened and that I should be allowed to start the program. I think at the time they were looking for a new head of the department or some member of the staff.
Either way, I am just sharing my experience with the school. I really had a horrible experience and I am glad that I got out. I am having a great time at the school I am in now. I'm glad your experience was better and hopefully they did fix their program.
Congrats on becoming an RN. :)
liu has revamped their whole nursing program and no like i said in my previous post it was not easy but nursing is not easy. i'm glad they revamped it! i was speaking from my prior experience there in 2004/early 2005. and you are 100% correct that nursing is not easy. no nursing program will be easy.they have implemented the hesi exam after each semester in addition to taking a medmath test every semester they administer three and if you dont pass ;you dont move on to the next level but the exams are fair. i feel like they bend over backwards to help their students they have remedial classes for the hesi and they also offer med math classess. this is the total opposite of what was going on when i was there. the non-nursing programs were like this but the nursing department was not, in my experience. this must have been before it was revamped though.you have to go speak to the advisor for yourself and ask what has been the passing rate for the last year or two because they have gone through a real transformation. i didn't know about this so i appologize if i gave some erroneous information. i was going by what i had experienced previously.i definitely recommend liu. at this point i just started nyph-columbia and nursing school is nothing compared to the real world of nursing i feel so lost like everything they taught me is down the drain. yes school was hard but this is no joke. i do believe i gained a great nursing eduction from liu but that is just the starting point. liu grad 2007 w/ no regrets except the cost lol:nurse:

i'm glad you are happy with your education and were well prepared. in the end, that is what counts.
Phew! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I actually met a recent grad of LIU and when I told her I went there asked about her exeperience, she became very excited and told me she loved it and especially loved her clinicals. She told me that I will enjoy it. Every time I get frustrated, I think of how happy she was about her experience, and that's what keeps me going. Also, I like to sit in the health building while I study and listen to passing (excited) nursing students talk about their classes. When I go to the nursing department, the advisor is nothing but nice to me, and answers my million and one questions. I believe I made the right choice for myself.
