Anyone applying to Yale GEPN program for Fall 2009?

Published

Hi,

Since there was a very extensive thread last year about application process to Yale, I thought I would start a new thread for 2009 hopefuls. I am working on my application and wanted to know who else chose Yale as one of their options. What program? How is the application process going? Essay writing? Any anxieties? I am applying to the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing but still deciding on the specialty. The hardest part for me is the essay writing as English is not my first language, but I have been working on it for some time now and getting close to finishing the final version. Anyone else wants to share?

I'm also looking to find a place with nursing student roommates, but am not 100% sure on Yale yet

anyone choosing yale over another program that is cheaper? If so..can i hear some reasons as to why? I am very close to choosing Yale but the temptation to go a well respected school in boston for approximately 35k less has done nothing but confuse me bc my gut still screams Yale!

i'm debating with columbia, only because i could be working as an RN as soon as next summer. it certainly isn't much cheaper, given cost of living. my gut is pushing for yale too though. i mean, it's YALE! ugh, and i thought the anxiety would end once i got into a program...

Hi everyone.

I've been a lurker on these boards - but I've been accepted into both Yale and Columbia for PNP. I'm still not sure where I'm going (waiting to see my financial aid package for Yale).

I was wondering if there are any other married students moving to New Haven for the program? My husband will be commuting to NYC for work if I go there - it would be nice to know if anyone is in the same boat? Also testing the waters to see if any married couples would want to go in on an apartment/house with us (we have two cats).

has anyone heard from YSN about Financial Aid yet? The acceptance letter said we'd know by the end of the month...

I haven't heard yet....Anxiously waiting but I'm fairly certain (and at the same time afraid :lol2:) that there won't be any surprises and that it will be very similar to what they outlined in the Financial Aid presentation on interview day.

I was wondering the same thing. I am waiting too.

I wasnt able to make it down on interview day, so I missed the presentation. Could someone let me know what they outlined about financial aid, so I know what to expect? Thanks!

they said avg debt coming out of the program is......(drum-roll)....$100k.

calalilly -

i believe they said we would get about 20,000 in stafford loans and an additional 7 or so in perkins. i've heard that the perkins loan has some sort of loan forgiveness program if you work in public health for a certain number of years. they didn't specify how much they would be able to give in scholarship money, so the amount we will need in private loans isn't clear yet. i'm just quoting these numbers from memory as i don't have my notes in front of me, so i might be a bit off.

Hey Pauvrelapin, I'm married, too, and will be moving with my husband. We'll be moving from the west coast, and he's thinking his best chance of getting a good paying a job will probably be in NYC (he's worked in film/entertainment since graduating from college, so his resume actually means something there). So I'm in the same boat as you! However, my husband is horribly allergic to cats, so we won't be able to be roommates. If you want, email me and we can talk about this more: [email protected].

For all of those debating between JHU, I'm in Baltimore right now...getting ready to go explore the city. Thus far, my impressions are mixed (but just arrived yesterday). Update to come.

Re: Baltimore - what are your initial impressions? I've never been but will be heading down tonight. When I called my hotel (which is near the Inner Harbor, I thought a good place to be) the woman recommended that I not walk at night, even the two blocks from the light rail. Awesome! Is it really that dangerous?

As far as Yale's finaid, here are my notes from interview day:

- $20,500 Stafford

- $6,000 Perkins (which you can work off)

- $1,500 student nursing loan -- these are all the maximum amounts

For the leftover amount a certain percentage will be a school scholarship with the average amount being $5,000 (highest amount this past year was $8,000), then we are left to get grad plus and private student loans on our own (or other scholarships of course). Basically total expenses including living costs were ~160K but most students come out with about $100K in debt. At least that's what I wrote down.. We'll see what Yale decides for us later this week!
