Hi,
Since there was a very extensive thread last year about application process to Yale, I thought I would start a new thread for 2009 hopefuls. I am working on my application and wanted to know who else chose Yale as one of their options. What program? How is the application process going? Essay writing? Any anxieties? I am applying to the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing but still deciding on the specialty. The hardest part for me is the essay writing as English is not my first language, but I have been working on it for some time now and getting close to finishing the final version. Anyone else wants to share?
Congratulations everyone! For those who haven't received your letter by snail mail yet, the pertinent info is to send deposit & confirmation form by Friday March 13th; financial aid info packet will be mailed by end of this month; brief mention of other required things; and that "additional information on the coming academic year will be sent at a later date." I suppose housing info would come once you've accepted!
What about Yale vs. Columbia -- anyone deciding between those two? I'm leaning towards Yale, but as of now am still planning on attending Visiting Day for accepted students at Columbia in the beginning of March. I just came away from my Yale interview day so positive and upbeat and inspired... but I want to make sure that I fully consider all of my options. Anyone have any thoughts on the Yale vs. Columbia debate?
Megandan & Miche9182 -- I am also trying to decide b/w Yale & Emory. Miche, you will probably get your notification this week actually. Mine was online this weekend & said letters should be arriving this week. Not all the decisions were available online but you may want to check OPUS! I'd be interested to hear how your visit goes. I am in contact with two students who love the program (both still in BSN part of segue, but one will be going into midwifery & the other is considering Acute). Let me know if either of you want me to forward what they've had to say. It really does sound wonderful! But Yale was great too! I am in a quandary. Laura
I think I'm actually leaning toward JHU at this point because of several reasons -- but I'm going to go to their accepted students day at the end of the month and hopefully this will help me make a decision, as I'm still considering Yale!!
I don't suppose you'd share your thoughts on JHU & why you're leaning towards it? That had been my top choice for a long time (FNP/MPH), and now for some reason Yale & Emory have taken first place. I wish I could go to the JH visiting day because my whole perspective of Yale changed that interview day. I visited JH, but it was only a 1/2 hour tour -- no meeting with faculty & students. I worry I can't possibly give it a fair shot without getting the same kind of exposure as I did for Yale. I'd like to hear what draws you to JH! I need perspective!

hi everyone! i'm in for ANP, but like "WannabePNP", i'm torn between Yale and Columbia. however, i am leaning towards Columbia because of the availability and accessibility of the clinical rotation sites and because of its' location. NYC is a lot more like SF (where i'm originally from) than new haven...
then again, i'm having a hard time turning down yale. IT'S YALE!
btw, congrats to everyone who got in and GL to everyone else who didn't this time around...
Laura, I'd definitely love to hear what the Emory students have to say. My friend went there for undergrad business so couldn't help me with the nursing part of the school. But he absolutely loves it down there. I've visited a few times but haven't talked to anyone at the nursing school. I applied to their acute peds program. And thanks for the info for OPUS! Mine isn't posted yet but I'll now be checking all the time and harassing the mailman haha. Let me know!
anyone else losing sleep over where to go?? I thought getting into school's would relieve anxiety...but i was wrong! I'm basically trying to decide bn Yale and Northeastern in Boston. Northeastern has a great program and it looks like they are going to give me a nice financial package. I live with a lot of great friends in Boston and love this city...but I'm havinjg trouble turning down Yale (not just bc of the name...)
Laura, I would also love to hear what the current Emory students have to say. I haven't heard from them regarding acceptance yet, but I have high hopes! Hopkins was one of my top choices originally too and now I am also leaning towards Emory and Yale. Please keep me updated as you make your decision! Bahhh such a hard choice...
I was having a similar troubles in choosing between BC and Yale. BC is about half the price and is where my friends, family, and boyfriend currently reside. BC's program is a whopping 2 years (which is a little overwhelming) and lets you choose your specialty later in the first year. Even though I am a little hesitant about commiting to psych, I know its my passion and it is the field I've always wanted to be in. Yale absolutely blew me away with their psych program. Their overall faculty and atmosphere made me feel like its the most superior place I've visited (even though its in New Haven, which is no Boston or NYC). I'm just gonna take a chance and move to New Haven. I'm only 2 hours away from home and my friends which isn't bad, and will allow me to get a new experience that I want and need. This is just me though. But just know I wrestled with a similar situation and I'm commiting myself to Yale even though I'm a little scared...but also SUPER excited!!!

Hey lauralou and anyone else who might be considering JHU! So, I'm in the same boat as you, still torn between the two schools, as I too had a wonderful experience at the interview day at Yale and feel the school would be a great fit in a lot of ways. However, I have to say I'm still leaning towards Hopkins because of its flexibility. I feel very confident in my choice of specialty at Yale, but personally I haven't had much first-hand exposure to clinical specialties in nursing, and I have no idea if I'll try out a rotation that's unfamiliar and love it. I know it's POSSIBLE to switch at Yale but it's a process and it is definitely not encouraged. The flexibility at Hopkins also includes being able to take a year off after the 1st yr if I wanted to and work as an RN -- again, this isn't something I'm planning on doing, but who knows? I like at least having that option. And, at JHU it's not too late to apply for the dual MSN/MPH program, something I developed more of an interest in only AFTER it was too late to apply for this at Yale. Another big factor for me is location-- just personally, i think I prefer Baltimore to New Haven. And last... transportation. I have a few friends who went to JHU for undergrad and/or grad school and never had cars. I believe (yet i still need to get more details on this) that the clinical sites at JHU are largely accessible by public transportation... something that would be a big draw for me since I would prefer not to have to get a car (I haven't had one for over three years now). That said... obviously there are many upsides to Yale, so if anyone else has more knowledge about JHU's program (or why you're choosing one school over the other) let me know!

I'm trying to decide between Yale and Emory. I've heard WAY more about the Yale program but I'm going down to visit Emory the second week in March. We're supposed to hear from them by March 1st, and I found wicked cheap tickets a couple weeks ago so even if I don't get in there I'll just visit my friend. They're having an information session on their program Mar 21st which is unfortunately after the Yale deadline. I'm emailing the woman in admissions that I've asked questions to before (Andrea Clark) to see if I could possibibly meet up with either a student or faculty member down there. That is one thing that Yale has done very well...kept everyone informed. I'm hoping Emory will be a little more helpful soon. Not really sure if that helps at all....
