  1. Hey, does anyone know if we need to send in those 2 photos WITH the deposit, or can they come later? And they're just regular passport-size, right? Thanks!
  2. Cool. Maybe he can have a torrid affair with the Marquis de Sade -- was that even the same era? Doesn't really matter I suppose, cuz since when are trashy romances historically accurate anyway? Hmmm, and keeping with the French, what about a "revenge" scene with the Count of Monte Cristo? Have fun :)
  3. Oh Biddy, I'm sorry! I am also even more confused this weekend. I may call you! So, yes, I do think you have a shot at negotiation, given what someone up there said about Yale being afraid to lose people due to aid elsewhere. I had asked before submitting my FAFSA if they take into account that you'll obviously not be making ANY money when you enter the program and they said they understood that but for now have to go by the FAFSA submitted this year. I can't remember what she said about appealing it after the fact (I asked every school these questions but can't remember who said what). Re expenses, the way I calculate it, based on what they post for 2008-2009, tuition is more expensive at JH regardless -- for the accelerated into MSN, it's $118,000 for tuition only (~$58k for Acc BSN + ~ 60k for next 2 yrs); at Yale, it looks to be ~$98,000 for all 3 years, including the extra summer tuition. This really surprised me! In terms of what Yale calculated for parking (I haven't gotten my aid letter yet), remember that you don't HAVE to pay for parking anywhere necessarily. If you live within walking distance, or on the shuttle line, and in an apt that includes parking, then that is a non-issue. I stayed with a current student, and she has free parking, and walks to school. Staying with her and meeting other students through her is what really gave me a great impression of Yale, besides the laid-back & warm atmosphere the next day. All the students I spoke with are really happy there -- didn't have one bad thing to say about it. Which is interesting, because I haven't gotten that same response from JH students. I did talk to a woman this weekend just finishing her MSN/MPH this year at JH, and she was really happy there. At both schools, I should note, students say the "best thing about this school" is the other people in their program. A common comment between all of them is that the accelerated year is really really hard, and that once they get into the specialty years, they really begin to love their program. The girl I stayed with at Yale recently wrote to see what was going on with my offers & acceptances, and said she is "officially loving school now" (her 2nd year). I will be talking hopefully today with another Yale-ite, who was an acquaintance of mine in Peace Corps, to get yet another perspective. This makes about 5 people from JH, and 4 from Yale -- and I'm still not sure! For me, it really comes down to tuition and scholarships, because I think cost of living isn't that much different, and no matter what, we will have to tighten our purse strings. Long message, but I just had to respond! Biddy, you could put down your deposit at JH and await their financial aid package -- which should get to us before we have to respond to Yale right?
  4. Miche, I was wondering the same thing. I considered calling to double check, but I imagine the whole point is to have you serve right out of the BSN; so if you're going on to the MSN directly, you wouldn't qualify. If you were considering taking a year or two off, then you could apply for a year or two of aid, respectively. I never asked, but I read the app a couple times and came to that conclusion, so I'm not applying.
  5. Biddy, Thanks for your updates! I couldn't make it to Baltimore for this visit -- or, rather, didn't want to miss more school and work and buy yet another plane ticket. I briefly visited JH on my way to the Yale interview and was wondering the same thing about "liveability". I'm from Seattle, where neighborhoods are about personality and comfort and lots of amenities within walking distance. Also, what did the current students you met tonight say about JHUSON in general? I've heard a lot of mixed reviews, and the word "frustration" comes up a lot. Keep the updates coming!!!!
  6. I'm sorry dohzenOFF! I feel your pain! Which program did you apply for? I spoke with Andrea about a waiting list, and she said there isn't one for the Segue -- only for the BSN. Any Segue'ers waitlisted only have the option of getting into the BSN at this point. I still don't understand why, but that's the way it is. The only chance of getting into the MSN now is to reapply in 2 years! You know, Columbia is a great school and world-reknowned! I'm sure you'll love it there -- and I hope you remembered to accept the fin. aid award by last week, even if you are undecided. If you forgot (like I did), you can call and ask for an extension... Good luck with everything!
  7. Congratulations everyone! What a relief it must be after all the stressing. I am still not ruling out Emory, despite only getting into the BSN, but like you Miche, am trying to decide between Yale & Emory. I didn't know about those two possibilities for aid, so thanks for posting the info! T. Crew, what waiting list are you talking about for housing? Is that for on-campus?
  8. Well???? Has anyone else heard anything?
  9. Hey, does anyone know if there is a Facebook group started for the GEPN Fall 2009 group?
  10. I talked to Emory yesterday. I asked them: On what do you base your criteria for admission to the BSN/MSN Segue vs. the BSN only? If I qualify for the BSN, why don't I qualify for the Segue? I ended up talking to two people -- Andrea, and the woman who answered who wanted me to know, before transferring me, that It was a much larger pool of applicants this year, and very, very competitive (she must have said that 7 times!). She congratulated me (!) and said I should realize how great it is to be accepted into the BSN. I asked her what % of BSNers get accepted into their MSN if apply later, and she said she doesn't have a %, but they rarely turned those people away, because you're already in, they know you, etc. I then spoke with Andrea, who explained more about the 2nd part of my question: they only have so many slots for the Segue, because they can't reserve all the spots for the MSN two years out -- they leave several open for other people who will later want to apply for that program when the time comes, say from other schools or from the traditional BSN. I didn't ask stats for the entire pool of applicants, but for my specialty (Family/Nurse-Midwife), there were 30 applicants and only 8 slots available. They do not discuss specifics on why an application would be more or less competitive than another, because it is decided by a group of people and many factors are taken together, incl scores and work experience. I know I wrote a great essay and have a damn strong application (6 yrs working in a women's health clinic, 2 yrs as health vol. in Peace Corps, 4.0's in my prereqs & most of undergrad, & great letters of recommendation),so..... I don't know! A major theme running through that conversation was Wow, you should be happy you got into the BSN, congratulations! But, my app was for a master's, not a bachelor's. I already have two of those! SO, any news for any of you?
  11. Thanks dohzenOFF! We'll see what my conversation is like with them tomorrow...
  12. WHAT is their deal? It's weird, too, that they would deny the Segue option to anyone who qualifies for the BSN -- since they interview you at the end of the BSN program anyway before allowing you into the MSN portion. I'm sorry dohzenOFF! I keep telling myself that things happen for a reason. Maybe you're meant to be at Columbia. Maybe I'm meant for Yale or JH. I just really thought Emory was calling to me. My gut kept telling me that. Sigh.
  13. Well guys I got my letter today and found out why I got my decision online and so early: They DENIED my admission to the Segue option and are offering me a position in the 2nd-degree BSN program only. Now it makes sense. I am super bummed, because Emory was by far my favorite program. I am also extremely annoyed that the online decision did not specify this -- what a way to get a girl's hopes up (!), even though I was suspicious of that online thing & tried to wait for the mail before getting excited. They did not say why they are "unable to offer admission" to the Segue program. I am still working on my pre-reqs, but still... I will be done with two out of the last 3 this quarter, with one to finish in Spring. So, I will definitely be calling to ask "WHY?" Why Yale, JH, & Columbia but not Emory???? I am so bummed. ANYWAYS, I think this is GREAT news for all you BSN/MSNers still waiting! No news is obviously much better news, so Good Luck!
  14. jalin -- No, I haven't! I'm on the west coast, so who knows how long it could take! I still think it was a fluke that I found my decision online -- has anyone else in the BSN/MSN segue program heard back yet? Odooma, I'll check out the new thread, but I don't want to abandon this one til we've all found out!
  15. Just to clarify about the RN licensure timing thing: It is true that you are not eligible to sit for the NCLEX until January of your 2nd year at Yale, when you have completed all the required courses. The woman I stayed with during the interview visit is in her second year (so, first year of "specialty"), and said she just qualified and will be taking the NCLEX during Spring break, so that she can work during the summer. I didn't think to ask how hard she'd heard it is to find RN work, given the points Charmed made... Hey all you "older" kids (I think I've got 10 yrs on you both) going to JHU next week: Please come back to the forum with your perspectives! I wish I could be there!
