Anyone applying to Yale GEPN program for Fall 2009?

Published

Hi,

Since there was a very extensive thread last year about application process to Yale, I thought I would start a new thread for 2009 hopefuls. I am working on my application and wanted to know who else chose Yale as one of their options. What program? How is the application process going? Essay writing? Any anxieties? I am applying to the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing but still deciding on the specialty. The hardest part for me is the essay writing as English is not my first language, but I have been working on it for some time now and getting close to finishing the final version. Anyone else wants to share?

I am not on the East Coast, but I live in the Southeast and I am still waiting. I can't believe that today is a mail holiday....have to wait at least one more day! Congrats to everyone who got in...I am so excited for you all! :yeah:

I know! I just realized this morning that there wasn't going to be a delivery today! I can't believe I actually have to wait another day!

Hey Ramiegrl,

I understand where you're coming from, not with the whole uprooting, but with the contemplating other schools. I'm waiting to hear back from MGH and Emory. There's things that I really like about each program so if I get into either of those as well it's going to be a tough choice. I don't think I'd worry about turing down the Yale reputation. I've been shadowing an NP in an ER in Providence and one of the questions that I continually get by people working there is why not schools around here that are cheaper. In the end you'll get the training that you need and much more learning in the actual nursing field when you're practicing. Getting that degree is what counts. Good luck on your other interview!

hang in there guys!!

Hey -- I'm new to this thread but found out yesterday i was accepted into Yale for acute care (i live in berkeley, california). While I'm very happy about this, it presents a bit of a tough situation. I'm firmly planted in the bay area and really don't want to uproot my life and move 3000 miles. I was not accepted into UCSF but have an interview at Samuel Merritt (which is in Oakland) this Thursday. If i do get into Samuel Merritt, I very well may go there. Do you all think I'd be crazy to turn down Yale in favor of a school which does not have the name recognition nor the reputation of such an illustrious university as Yale? I feel so torn and confused about all this. I know Yale would be such a great opportunity and I was really impressed with the staff and prospective students during the interview/orientation day. It's just that the thought of moving away from everyone i love and the place where i've lived for 27 years fills me with, well, dread. Any advice would be so appreciated. Thanks!

I know exactly how you feel. In some ways, I'm in a very similar situation. While I'm actually originally from CT, I've lived in CA (SF for 2 years and the LA area for almost 5 years now) ever since I graduated from college. (And I was not accepted into UCSF either!) The way I look at it is, go to the place where you feel you will receive the best training. You can always come back to California afterwards -- when I was at Yale for interview day, I was amazed at the number of people who were either current or prospective students and were from California. In the peds section, we were laughing at the number of Cali people present in the room! Look at it as an adventure -- it's never a bad thing to live in a new place for a few years and experience something different. And Cali will always be there for your to go back to when you finish up. I say, if you have a great experience at Samuel Merritt and decide that's where you truly want to go, then go for it. But if you really feel that Yale is the place you want to be, don't let geography stop you. You can always move back after the program is over, and you'll be enriched for having had the experience of living in a different place. Good luck!!

Has anyone thought about calling YSN about decisions? Or will they not tell us over the phone? Sorry....this wait is killing me!

Considering that there is no mail delivery today, I would give them a call to ask about your status. Last year many people called and found out over the phone.

Ramiegrl, I second what WannaBe & Miche both said! While reputation is great, you happen to be entering a field where there is a huge demand for well-trained people -- whether you get that training at Yale or Samuel Merritt. If you truly feel the second school offers a great education, then that is what should count. On the other hand, if you are only choosing due to the fact it is close to home, I would strongly reconsider. It IS only 3 years, after all! Otherwise, you gotta go with your gut instinct on this. At least, I think that is what I will have to do. It is a really difficult decision because there are really great things about all the schools I applied to -- I think we have to choose based on which one causes your heart to skip the most.... financial issues aside! Good luck at the interview and I hope it makes your decision clearer...

I agree! Nothing to lose at this point by calling. If I were in your shoes I would definitely give them a call. It's worth a shot!

No dice. I just called and they said they can't give results over the phone.

I guess we just have to wait impatiently!

If someone is going to call to find out their status, will you post whether they told you? My mail wont come till 4pm tomorrow and that means loosing another day of writing to worrying.

Hey everyone, I'm in Seattle and got my acceptance letter yesterday as well -- big surprise, cuz I was sure I wouldn't hear anything until Weds. My friend here got hers too, for FNP. I applied for Adult/Women's Health and my letter says "Women's Health Nurse Practitioner" -- not sure if that's because the Adult track is a given....? Does anyone know? Congratulations to everyone! And to be on the waitlist is still pretty darn good -- you still have a chance! Good luck!

hey lauralou2008, I was also accepted to the ANP/WHNP program, and my letter also just said "Women's health nurse practitioner" -- this must just be because the ANP is a given, since I'm positive they don't even offer a stand-alone WHNP degree at yale. congrats!
