Anyone applying to Yale GEPN program for Fall 2009?

Published

Hi,

Since there was a very extensive thread last year about application process to Yale, I thought I would start a new thread for 2009 hopefuls. I am working on my application and wanted to know who else chose Yale as one of their options. What program? How is the application process going? Essay writing? Any anxieties? I am applying to the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing but still deciding on the specialty. The hardest part for me is the essay writing as English is not my first language, but I have been working on it for some time now and getting close to finishing the final version. Anyone else wants to share?

Hey uclabruin!

Yeah, that definitely makes a lot of sense that it would be difficult to find a role for both the psych and primary care settings, and then it may just seem like a waste of extra time and effort. Psych is my passion and I definitely don't want to have it diluted, so I guess it makes sense to just stick with one or the other. If I find later in my career that I want more of a medical emphasis with the primary care aspect then I can do a year of post grad work somewhere or specialize in primary care if i eventually go for the DNP (which i know we will be grandfathered in with the MSN, but I may want to go back later on for personal purposes). As for the psych program at Yale, I was extremely impressed! I really do believe that they have one of the best psych programs in the nation. I met with the head of the child/adolescent track and want to eventaully sit for the family psychiatric nurse practitioner so I can deal with patients all along the lifespan, but work mostly with children. How was your experience uclabruin? How did you feel the adult psych track was? I did not apply to UCSF. Did you get into UCSF? If you did, then that's really impressive since their program is super competitive! Are they supposed to have a really good psych nursing program? Ugh, this wait is killing me and I really hope I get in so I can stop rambling on about myself and start stressing about other stuff like where to find an apartment and a roomie! haha.

Hello, I just wanted to wish everyone good luck today. If everything is going as planned, today February 9th YSN will decide who they will accept into the program. I hope everything works out for us all. O boy, I hope Friday the 13th turn out to be a lucky number for us all.

Hi all! I was accepted by Johns Hopkins for the FNP speciality and am waiting to hear from UCSF. I also applied to Yale and Columbia but felt Johns Hopkins and UCSF fit me best. Johns Hopkins asks for a $500 deposit by Feb. 20th and UCSF will not send out its announcements until March 2nd. Is anyone else in this situation? I am trying to decide whether or not to forgo that money. Of course, in the end, I will fork it over because UCSF is such a long shot but I wanted to see if there was anyone else in the same dilemma. Thanks! Best of luck today!!!

CAtoDC, my letter from JH says to reply with a deposit by March 4th... Hmmmm. Yes, I'm in a similar situation, and my plan is to send the deposit to whichever school I can narrow it down to. If an acceptance and a better financial aid package comes in from my last school then I will cut my losses on the first deposit. It's the only way I can figure out how to do it. Good luck everybody!

Laura, Did you apply to the accelerated program or regular???

CAtoDC: accelerated.

So strange! I just called JHU and they confirmed my acceptance for the accelerated FNP program. Do you have any idea on why our deposit dates are different?

Hey CAtoDC-- I was also accepted to JHU accelerated FNP and my deposit date is also different, it's for March 3rd. I think maybe it has to do with when we were interviewed? b/c it sounded like it was slightly rolling, so they review applications as they come in. I'm not sure, but that's just my guess...

Very interesting. My acceptance later does have an error on it, saying that I selected and have been accepted to the Pediatric specialty for the master's portion. I decided it didn't matter, since specialty choices are flexible, and since it was probably a typo anyway. I doubt that would make a difference for the Accelerated program deposit date anyway! I'm going with what UCLABruin says, and I don't want to ask for fear they'll make me reply sooner! CAtoDC, you didn't happen to choose early decision on your app did you? Just a thought...

Nope, no early decision here. Here's what JHU wrote to me in response to my email asking for an extension and inquiring about the different due dates: "The reason for different deposit due dates is because we probably notified her of her acceptance at a later date than when you were notified. We give all applicants the same amount of time to send their deposit in to be fair. You may opt to turn in your deposit after your deposit due date, however the deposit is what holds your spot. So, if we receive the deposit after your due date we cannot guarantee a spot will still be available. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns." I really dont want to lose 500 dollars if I get accepted to UCSF. Thoughts?

I sent in my $400 deposit to BC due Feb 9th (today) even though Yale is my first choice. I figured that there is a very good chance that I may get rejected from Yale, and BC is my second choice, so I didn't want to risk it. That's just me though. Figures my due date for BC is the exact day Yale is making the final decisions.

So, do we know for sure that we will find out by the 13th? Angela definitely said on my interview/orientation day that we would find out the 15th--which doesn't make sense since that it is a Sunday. She said that people who live farther away might receive phone calls before they receive their letters.

I take this to mean we will be getting snail mail, not emails. Do you think they are sending out the letters on the 13th? Did anyone get a really clear picture of the notification process?
