Anyone applying to Yale GEPN program for Fall 2009?

Published

Hi,

Since there was a very extensive thread last year about application process to Yale, I thought I would start a new thread for 2009 hopefuls. I am working on my application and wanted to know who else chose Yale as one of their options. What program? How is the application process going? Essay writing? Any anxieties? I am applying to the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing but still deciding on the specialty. The hardest part for me is the essay writing as English is not my first language, but I have been working on it for some time now and getting close to finishing the final version. Anyone else wants to share?

I believe she meant 70% of those asked for an interview, and this information comes from last years thread probably because that was the quote given. However, on the Yale forum the girl said 33-50% of interviewed people get in depending on specialty, or more correctly, they offer interviews to 2-3 times the number of people they actually have spaces for. If anyone has more 'official' information, please share.

Charmed-exactly where I got the 70% figure, that's the only place I got my info from! :chuckle

Regarding UCSF, I work there (Med Center) & didn't get in there last year. SO P*SSED* Have to work today in their scrubs, but can't go to their school...nice. haaha.

But they offer the opportunity to talk with someone about why you didn't get in. They want to diversify the program. Not affirmative action-type stuff at all. I asked the person a lot of questions. She specifically said people whose parents did not attend graduate programs or college (that is why it asks that on the application...!) and people who speak another language. I speak poor Spanish, so I asked if I improved my Spanish if I would have a better chance this year. She hesitated and said probably not. :crying2: She said they want people who reflect the bay area. They want people who speak Asian languages/other languages, although of course Spanish is great.

At UCSF, most of our employees are Filipino and speak Tagalog and we have major issues with not having Cantonese translators as well.

I applied anyway, and maybe they received a lot of complaints because they added that question about overcoming things or whatever it was...maybe people were upset (as I was) about the parents attending college thing. My parents both went to college and I thought that was unfair at a grad level.

However, a friend of mine with a dance major and a 3.2 GPA with no other or weak foreign language skills received an interview and was 1st alternate last year and her parents went to college, so they didn't totally discriminate on that. She will prob. get in this year.

So who knows.

But the lady advised me to apply at private schools "like Yale" (specifically!) and said that it had nothing to do with grades, etc. but that they do not emphasize that at UCSF (my GPA is 3.8 for my undergrad degree, 4.0 for my science stuff after graduating) and I did research! I was so sad..:bluecry1::bluecry1::bluecry1: It was hard to go to work for months. It was the only school I applied to last year. :(

Sorry to hear that about UCSF. Wow, I use to think that only medical students who reside in Cali have a hard time getting into school but I did not realized that nurses also have a hard time getting into nursing school in that states. Wow. I hope you get in this time around. Are you practicing for your interviews with someone?

Oh, I think you misunderstood--I am not a nurse--I'm applying for the MEPN program too. I work as a medical surgical nurse's assistant at UCSF.

:D

Unfortunately, I received my rejection letter today when I got home from work. :crying2:

It's ok, I just thought that I would try one more time!!!! haha:D

I hope that others had better luck!!!!!!!! SF is *FANTASTIC!* I love it here!

Who rejected you if you don't mind be asking?

I was curious what other schools everyone applied to?

What schools have you heard from & which is your top choice?:D

I also applied to Columbia and UCSF. My top choices were probably Yale and UCSF, but unfortunately I received my rejection letter from UCSF in the mail yesterday. Ah, well. At least I will have to buy one fewer plane ticket!

i love providence! i will miss it indeed. I'm doing research on substance use at Butler. it's pretty interesting stuff. what kind of research do you do, suga? new haven's interesting but definitely not as cool or quirky as providence =)

Hey Sprinklez!

I'm currently a research coordinator for clinical trials, which basically means I run the whole placebo/controlled drug studies for the big pharm. companies like Johnson&Johnson, Eli Lilly, etc. Right now I'm working on an IBS, insomnia, osteoarthritis and migraine study. It is a really interesting field, and I get to do alot of clinical work like blood draws and taking vital signs - but I am really really excited to get into the nursing field!

and to all the other schools I'm applying to...I've also applied to Columbia, Boston College, Duke, Mass General, and Northeastern. Yale is my top choice, but all these schools are so ridiculously hard to get into that I will really just go where ever I'm accepted (hopefully I'll get into at least one place)! But for now, I'm crossing my fingers for Yale!

Anyone else interviewing for Acute Care NP at Yale & UCSF? Anyone by chance know how many spots there are for Yale? I haven't heard anything about potlucks except on this forum. Is this an informal thing because I emailed Angela and she didn't mention it- just that the day should be over at 2:30. Also, is anyone staying with a YSN student host? Sandra never got back to me regarding that, so I just ended up making plans to crash with a friend.

Thanks to the person that posted the PM clarification earlier. I was confused about that for awhile.

Two questions:

1. Has anyone who asked about staying with a student heard more about that? I haven't heard back yet and so I'm thinking I might stay in a hotel...

2. Do we include our parent's info on the FAFSA?

It clearly stated in the YSN Financial AID instruction page that parental information are not required.

I was wondering about what their financial aid package look like. I wonder if it also includes room and board besides tuition and fees. I calculate that I will need to borrow at least 60k for the first year. 45k for tuition and fees alone.

Yeah, you're right...missed that.
