Anyone applying to ACC (Austin Community College) or Temple College for Fall 2008???

Published

I'm new to allnurses community but just recently turned in my applications to both Austin Community College and Temple College.

I've not applied to ACC before and was turned down last year by Temple but I did really bad on the NET compared to other students (only a 74 composite) so I wasn't suprised to have been rejected. This year I did much better so I'm hoping the tides will turn..... I'd really like to get into ACC because it is closer to home but at this point I'll take either!!!

Oh well, just wanted to say hello and see if there are any other wanna be nursing students, like myself, living in the Austin, TX area waiting to know what their futures holds :-)

Take care and have a great evening!

I applied to ACC for Fall 2008. I just finished the Nursing Skills class today.

If you want an awesome Microbiology instructor, I can recommend the absolute BEST teacher I have ever had. I can also recommend for reviews of all teachers and grade histories go to Pickaprof.com.

My Anatomy teacher was the absolute WORST teacher I have ever had. He got horrible reviews on this Pick a prof site.

I live in Pflugerville and am thinking about trying the distance learning option for the nursing program. Does anyone know what the hours are like on this? Also I heard from my Nursing Skills Instructor that last term, HALF of the people doing this distance learning option FAILED. Something must be wrong, because students don't get this far to fail.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to get reliable child care in the area? I am a single mom with a sixteen year old boy, very reliable and trustworthy, does not drive, but is very very busy with extracurriculars. A 10 year old very responsible girl, a boy age 7 who needs good adult supervision, and a low key sweet 5 year old boy.

What kind of child care do I need to secure? How much do I need to pay someone?

Has anyone finished the Nursing Skills class and got a job at a local hospital with the GAIN program?

I am also thinking of applying to Texas Tech's web based 2nd bachelor's program. Does anyone know how this program is?

Summer semester I will take Nutrition and Sociology distance learning, and if I get into the Nursing Program for Fall, I will also take Medical terminology and Pathophysiology. Does anyone know how hard any of these classes are? I was going to try to take these distance learning too.

Barbara

Hey, taffy,

I'm in anatomy now, but I'm curious about your professor. Also, I'm taking micro either this summer or in the fall. Can you PM me and let me know who these folks are?

Since I'm not in the program, I don't have first-hand experience about the child care. But I'm thinking a college student might work for you. If your son is capable of watching the kids part of the time, and what you mainly need is transportation, perhaps a college student could pick them up and drop them off, maybe help with homework. Also, there are some after-school programs like Extend-a-Care and the Y at schools. Some are good; some not.

You may also be able to enlist a friend to help out, perhaps in some kind of child care exchange?

It's definitely a lot harder to get by as a parent, not to mention a single parent. I don't know how you do it. I have one ten-year-old girl and a husband who helps out a lot, and it's still stressful.

I've heard the same about the distance learning program. I don't know anyone who's done that, but I think some people just aren't disciplined enough for that. My limited experience with nursing students in prereqs is that many don't study or study very little and seem half serious about it. Perhaps distance learning doesn't provide enough accountability for them.

well???? anybody in for Temple fall 08?

Does anyone know what are being tested for Temple College NET Exam? Thank you.

I've been taking pre-reqs (both at ACC & Temple) since early 2005... I had to do it one class at a time and now I'm done with everything and am taking my final pre-req (RNSG 1105) this semester.

I wish I had the patience to go the BSN/UT route but I feel like I've been working on this for so long already and I just want to get the show on the road.

What a tough decision regarding leaving your daughter at home alone during the summer. Maybe you could work something out so she could stay with a friend at least part of the time???

Either way, good luck with your studies. The good news is ACC supposedly doesn't have near the waiting list as in previous years which should be good for both of us.

Also, by 2010, Texas State is supposed to have their nursing program running in Round Rock at the Round Rock Higher Education Center... you might check into that as well.

Well, nice to 'meet' you and have a good evening :)

I recently took two assessments tests at the RR HEC--no wonder our taxes are so high. They have a waterfall out front, glass elevators, wood paneling in the stair railings. It is beautiful. Good news I passed both A & P assessment exams.

Bo from Cedar Park.

First - regarding ACC, I heard that they have accepted all but 4 people for 2008 and are even trying to find spots for them. They have hired more instructors I believe, so you don't have to wait. I am currently taking my pre reqs and just completed a Summer 5.5 week Anatomy, Dr Jaurez at South Austin is the BEST!! And for Fall 08 I am taking Micro (Foster) & Chem (Amorde) Anyone else? I have not heard much about either prof. Are we not supposed to post their names?

SECOND - due to childcare with 3 kids and cost and time factors - I am looking at doing the 2nd degree BSN with TAMU CC. It can be completed in 18 months and is 100% online and they have 7 or 8 admit times per year. PLUS, fewer requirements that UT AE MSN, so I can start sooner. And HALF the cost of UT. Not knocking UT, but with the childcare situation, this other is looking more appealing. Then I want to just keep on with an online MSN. Still comes out cheaper than doing the AE at UT and time wise, can finish with MSN at same time. Any thoughts? Anyone know someone there or going there?

I had Dr Juarez this summer for a two weekend (Sat & Sun) crash course in biology to prepare for the anatomy assessment exam. She is an outstanding teacher but the South Austin Campus is a long drive for me.

Hi, RN2Be,

I'm thrilled to hear that ACC has professors and can enlarge their enrollment. I'm taking my last prereq and my last coreq this fall. I just wish I could start nursing school in the spring!

I don't know anything about the micro and chem professors you're signed up with, so I can't give any info there.

I haven't heard anything about TAMU's program. Is this A&M in College Station? I'm not pursuing UT's AE MSN for the same reasons you are. Although I have only one child, their program is not family-friendly enough for me at this point. Also, I'll have to work a little while in school, and I've heard that's next to impossible in their program. I have one master's from UT, and I'd love another, but it's just not feasible for me. If I get into ACC, I'll pursue a higher degree later when I'm in the field.

Good luck!

Thank you editor2rn, good luck with your path as well!

It is wonderful that ACC is accepting more students, its a strong program with very high NCLEX scores. And I think they even have some online options that would be even more family friendly.

I have a friend that was planning on ACC, but she pays out of county tuition and it looks like the TAMU CC ELINE program may be even less expensive that ACC! And would be quicker because they have so many enrollment periods. Just in case that were the case for you or any others searching for their path.

TAMU CC is in Corpus Christi. But, dont know how you could go from being a Longhorn to Aggie :p! Just kidding, I personally would be proud to have a degree from either one. And I look better in Orange anyway, good thing Eline is online!!

Hmmmm, maybe I'll check out TAMU's program. I'm applying to ACC in January, and it's frustrating to sit and twiddle my thumbs until fall, if I'm accepted. One good thing about UT's program is you can apply in your last semester of prereqs to start the next semester. I just don't know why ACC can't allow the same.

Thanks for sharing the info. Are CC A&M folks Aggies, too? Just what we need . . more Aggies. :D

Look at this way...you will have all your bases covered in Austin!

Here is the TAMU Eline link: http://www.eline.tamucc.edu/faq.htm

Good luck and keep in touch!

I just started Orientation this week to work as a GAIn student in RRMC as a PCTII. Not sure of the pay rate yet. Initially before the interview, they were saying they will only hire you if you have finished a semster of nursing school. I am just getting started with the Fall class. I did become a CNA over the summer, so they took that and will let me go PRN around my class schedule.

Wish me luck working this all out around the classes and the six kids (and the little dog too).
