Will you be coming to Manhattan (New York City) or it's boroughs or Long Island itself (which is not a city).

Well, I am originally from Long Island (and like Suzy said, it is not a city, but a whole bunch of towns). There are a lot of good hospitals. I've worked at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and in Glen Cove, I've also worked at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Winthrop University Hospital. All are fine hospitals.
Living on Long Island is expensive and you pretty much need to have a car although some of the hospitals are on a bus line. Expect to pay a minimum of $800 in rent.
The nice thing is that as a nurse on Long Island you can start with a reasonable income compared to some areas like Florida which has salaries that are much less to start but rents and housing has grown exponentially.
If you can't tell...I'm feeling a little homesick:uhoh3: .

rn affah, i'm not from longisland but i know quite enough about it.i agree with sara about the hospitals( they are great facilities), but i never heard of anyone renting in longisland for less than $1,000.i may be wrong , but most basements(if that's what you are looking for ) costs about $1,200.they usually contain two bedrooms.if you are looking to rent a town house or an apt(in a apt complex), it will cost a little more.hope this helps.i know a good realtor , so if you need one let me know.the cost of living is very expensive in long island but the neighborhoods are pretty good.i'm not sure what you mean by nursing life though.lol.if you are refering to the pay, i don't think you will complain about your salar so don;t worry about that.
i don't know alot about the universities but ,depending how far you want to go, you have many options.some universities in li include : long island university, hofstra, farmingdale university, nassau community college, stoney brook, and touro college.
Thank you girls for your information but do you know how much is the salary in Long island as Foreign RN NICU with exp.?

Hello. I have lived on Long Island my whole life, so I think I can help you. Long Island consists of two counties...Nassau and Suffolk. Nassau being the smaller one, closer to the city. Suffolk is much larger and east of Nassau. I am from nassau and I can tell you that it is terribly expensive. If you are looking to rent in nassau, you will have a very diffifult time tryin to find an apartment complex in a nice nieghborhood...bc there really arent any. You will most likey have to rent out a basement apartment or part of a house. The cheapest you'll see is about $800-900 (in a basement). The major healthcare system is called North Shore-LIJ healthcare system which consists of many hospitals around Nassau..also, Winthrop University Hospital, NUMC, South Nassau, St. Francis Heart Center and Mercy Medical Center. As for nursing schools nasau community college offers an ADN, and Adelphi university and Molloy college are the private ($$$) institutions that offer BSN and graduate programs.

South Nassau Hospital in Nassau County had a special program for Foreign RN entrants. I am not a foreign entrant, but I am a returning nurse who has not had a lot of practice a in a long time. Call South Nassau in Long Beach, New York. Ask for Nursing and ask them if they still have the program for Foreign Nurses. I though it was a good program. You do have to take half salary just while they train you. It is not that long. It starts in the summer. They are currently expanding their NICU facility, and may have an opening for you in their program. If you can't find out who to call, PM me, and I will find out.
I also know someone who is not foreign, but she just got a job at Wintrhrop Hospital in I think Garden City in Nassau County. She is from another state. She is doing a house sharing where a few people , who don't know each other share a house to save money. It lessens your privacy, but saves money. Also Winthrop is right on the train tracks, so you don't need a car to work there. I can find out exacly where she does this house sharing. PM me if you want any exact information on either two of these things. I will be happy to get more exacting information for you.

A friend of mine works at St Francis Cardiac Hospital and the pay there is pretty good. Even the CNA's get $18/hr. For the most part, hospitals in both counties are very good and will pay better than NYC hospitals. They are in competition with manhattan hospitals salary-wise. I am from Queens but grew up in Hempstead and my parents made pretty good money working in the county. They are building new residences, especially in the Westbury/ Garden City area. You may pay at least $1000/month, but I suggest that you look into it. I moved to NJ to go to nursing school because it is cheaper and less of a chance of waiting 2 or 3 years to get into a program. I will be back though. No place like NY. Good luck to you!

Rent here is a minimum of $800 a month unless you want to rent a room which is like 600 a month..but they have a great teaching school in stonybrook which is hired by the state and you can retire after ten years not to mention great benifits...plus you have mather hospital and st charles in port jefferson, and good sam...there are lots of good hospitals here depending where you want to go...the pay is high but it goes along with the rent lol
