Anybody else tired of taking pre-reqs?

I know that we need them in order to get into the nursing program but some of them seem SOOOOOO useless! I have a Dialogue class and all we do is read this wierd book that the professor wrote himself, nobody understands it and we have to write papers on it! Sociology just seems like it's all about race (may be different at other schools idk). I like my Anatomy and learning to like my math class. Those two are the only classes I'm taking this semester that seem like they're gonna help me to be a good nurse. I just want to start my major already! Does anybody else feel or has felt this way?

Sociology is very important in understanding people. There is so much diversity in healthcare, society, education etc. that it seems crucial to have a solid foundation in sociology so you can better relate to each individual patient.

All of the pre-reqs I took an important foundation for starting nursing school in my opinion.

Every pre req I've taken can help me in some way with preparing for nursing school EXCEPT this darn music class I had to pick as an elective!! It's consuming all my time and I hate it lol.

Ahh....silly rabbit...don't you know..that is how you weed out the wannabes? I earned my BSN in '08 and a LOT of people quit along the way saying things were "'dumb" or "pointless"...ok? I have noticed excuses like that are normally the way people get out of doing the work. If ones says a class is "pointless" it helps make them feel better about being a quitter. Everyone wants the big time but no one wants to work for it.

They may seem like a waste of time, but I am certain that they are needed to help you become a well-rounded nurse. For instance, Sociology and Developmental Psych especially help to educate you about how to relate and understand a diverse group of patients on a personal level. ....To understand how old age affects psyche, or how socioeconomic status can affect a person's likelihood to seek medical care etc. etc. They equip you with the tools to empathize. You need those attributes! Why wouldn't you want those qualities as a nurse?

I'm in CA and while it's annoying and seems pointless, CA has really tough requirements to get into nursing programs at JC's and UC's so for those types of schools it's a way to weed students out.

One should remember, you are earning a degree not just a title. I too cannot stand all the pre's and co's. I am now in a BSN program and feel that many of the classes are useless, unlike some people who have posted SOC is a waste of brain power as well as some early NUR classes but like I said you're earning a degree which means, in short, a well rounded education. Learning and becoming educated is much different than getting a degree. Many people have a degree but are not educated because they didn't learn, they just skated by... But all in all I do hate taking all these classes too and someday we will all be happy its over :) Best of luck to everyone!!!

If you are able to take some pre-reqs that will meet your degree requirements and they are actually interesting, you are one of the lucky ones! I am in Micro now, sweated through A&P I & II (it was tough for me), but I took a 'Counseling' class that taught me new perspectives on dealing with people. This was not a pre-req, but I figure I'd better take the courses I can along with the courses I need....once I get into nursing school that is all you get to take---nursing courses!! I am looking forward to those classes, but I am enjoying the occasional 'I just want this course'.

I don't know if I'd say I am "tired" of them, but I'm definitely anxious to be in the nursing program itself. I used to hate any class not directly relevant to my degree, but I've noticed in the past year I'm looking at them with a different perspective and even enjoying most of the gen eds.

Pre reqs are NOT worthless. Guess what..you need a well rounded education for a BSN. Also the pre reqs help weed out the people who really want to do it. Do you want them to just hand people a nursing degree? Everyone wants the big time, but no one wants to work for it. Lots of stuff working as a nurse may seem "pointless", but guess what.you BETTER do it and you better do it well. I saw a lot of people wash out of nursing school who said the pre reqs were "stupid". I have been a nurse 8 years and a I have a great career and good life. If doing the pre-reqs is pointless then maybe you don't really want to be a nurse. You are learning to follow rules, do what you are expected to do, and that their are consequences to not doing what you are told. Sounds like those pre-reqs may be more valuable than any nursing course you take.

I agree with you. I started out as a pre-nursing major with my roommate but changed majors to community health. Some of the courses I took for my major also applied to nursing prereqs. My roommate took anatomy three times and couldn't get her grade any higher than a D. I finished my degree and continued to take some prereqs I had left to apply to NS. I'll admit that the prereqs may seem to drag on, but ultimately, we have to do it for a reason. If you can't make it past these classes, you won't do so well in nursing imo.
