I'm applying to WSU CON for Spring '14, and just took the TEAS over the weekend. Just wondering if I have any other company here? :)
Hi KHHappy07,
I'm going to be real honest with you about Yakima, there are some parts of town that have higher crime rates than other areas. I was told not to live on the east side of town past S 16th ave and to live as close as possible to school. There are dorms that YVCC owns. They are very cheap, but you do have to share a kitchen with everyone who lives in the building and the rooms are small. Some have found that they don't like it. Also if you will be driving to school, you need to arrive very early before 8am because you are sharing parking spots with YVCC and you don't want off street parking, cars get vandalized quite often. You won't really have time to know Yakima since you will be so busy with school anyway lol. I live across from YVCC,so about 4 min walk from school. A lot of my classmates drive from other towns since they are locals.I am also local but I decided to live close to the school, since it would be more convenient. Are you planning to do 4 semester or 5 semester?
I've been warned about the crime rates that you mentioned. It is a bit concerning, but I too would like to live close to campus. Being able to walk to school would be ideal. I did look into the housing offered, and its definitely not for me! I appreciate the heads up. I'm planning on the 4 semester.
When you go into the assigned room, there will be 3 people interviewing you. They will have you pick out an envelope from a basket. Each envelope has at least 5 questions, the number of Q's vary. They give you about 15 min for your interview, and yes they will be writing down stuff as you talk.
Why do you want to be a nurse?
What is your favorite subject?
What would be one thing you can change about the world?
If you caught a classmate cheating, what would you do?
Dress professionally
Make good eye contact throughout the interview
firm handshake
smile
talk about the importance of diversity
make yourself stand out
experiences
be yourself,don't be fake
At the end of the interview make sure to ask them questions:
What are your expectations from me as a J1 student?
Send each interviewer a simple thank you note,so remember their names! lol

Well let me start off by saying that it is going to be hard work! I have made it this far and I am proud of that haha..I recommend not working, although some of my classmates do,it depends on the person. If you are not a CNA or have any medical experience,it might be little harder, since you have to know the basic skills right away. It is very stressful, especially patho, clinical, and health assessment. As a J1 your goal is to just pass your classes, you fail one you go to 5 semester. I'm not trying to scare you or anyone reading this but that's how the program works. You will be like a supportive family with your classmates compared to Spokane. Be prepared for the snow and ice in January! Good luck on your interview! If you get accepted and can't find housing, feel free to message me, I might consider a roommate for Spring :)
