Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

or could be less than 2 weeks. i remember reading that the decision letters during 2006 came earlier(on 02/26 or so). 03/01 is the latest postmark date, so hopefully will be little earlier than 03/01.

I'm not so sure about that. I clearly remember Scott saying that the postmark date was 3/01, but that it was a Saturday, so not to expect anything to be sent before 3/03. I wanted to raise my hand and say that this year was a leap year, so why couldn't they send them out on 2/29, which would be 3/01 if it wasn't a leap year? I wasn't sure how well that would go over, so I bit my tongue. ;)

I'm not expecting anything any time soon! But I'll be happy to be wrong!

I am counting days --this is not easy. I think I might just crap my pants when the letters come in March. I remember hearing that both the acceptance and rejection letters are thin, is that an unfortunate reality or a twisted scenario I've conjured up?

Pretty much every school acceptance letter I've gotten was thin. It usually includes the letter, which is a page or two and then a response form. I got my acceptance letter to Yale yesterday and it was thin.

Hey birthrevolution, Congratulations on Yale!!!

:yeah:

That's awesome!

I think I saw earlier in this forum that the envelopes are thin.

About 2 weeks now, if they're sent out on the 3rd....

Birthrevolution --Congrats on Yale! That is awesome. I think I posted before about my experience at Yale New Haven Hospital, Labor and Delivery is pretty mellow and there are lots of midwives attending. The nurses on that floor are awesome. I did three years of birth work in the CT /NY area....lots of free standing birth centers...stellar group midwifery practices. Will the choice be tough for you?

Best of luck with UCSF.

And Star, thanks for your energy on this board. Did you interview on the 25th?

Thanks for the congrats everyone! That's good to hear about Yale New Haven Hospital. I really enjoyed my visit to Yale, I found everyone so friendly and approachable. My decision is going to be challenging to make whether or not I get into UCSF, I've got a lot going on right now! Hopefully once I hear from UCSF and get the financial aid statement from Yale I'll be in a better place to make the decision.

Good luck everyone! Not too much longer to wait.

I hate waiting. I guess all men hate waiting :D

Let me start off by saying good luck to all you guys, and I hope you all get in!! I am very interested in UCSF's ACNP program, but I am not applying as an MEPN, as I already have my BSN and 5 years experience, but I am interested in learning what I can from you guys/girls who have been through the process.

I would like to ask some questions, I don't know if the relevance will be the same being that I will apply as an MSN not an MEPN, but it can't hurt to ask.

What was your GPA when applying? GRE score? Volunteer experience?

How easy/difficult is it to get on campus housing? That is a major factor for me, because I will need housing if I attend school there, San Fran is too expensive to rent in the city, and I am unsure if you can use student loans for rent. I am used to expensive rent, as I live in NYC, but I am working full time here, and I won't be working full time if I am attending school there.

Do you need a car to get to classes/clinicals?

Thank you, and good luck to all!

Imagin916,

I'm thinking that MEPN stats are probably going to be different from MSN stats. For what it's worth, I had a 3.49 in my BA and a 3.8 in my MSW. My GREs were 1420 and I've volunteered since I was 15, although not always in a healthcare setting. Keep in mind that while I've interviewed, I still have no idea if I'm in.

To address the questions about housing and cars, you're probably better off renting independently if you stay in SF. UCSF's housing is market rate, but they're in a fairly nice neighborhood, so you could maybe find more for your money if you look elsewhere. The only thing that seems to recommend it is the flexible lease. And yes, you can use student loans to pay rent.

If your classes and clinicals are in the city, you can use BART/MUNI to get around (depending on where you live/work). If clinicals are out of the city, you'll probably want a car, although going down the Peninsula (to San Mateo/Palo Alto) you can take Caltrain.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your reply. I am not sure if the regular MSN program requires an interview, I hope now, I get so nervous during interviews! I guess as far as the housing, I will cross that bridge when I get there and worry about it if I even get in. Thank you again for your help, and good luck to you! Maybe I'll see you on campus next year if I make it (I will be applying for Fall 2009)

sheilanagig - yep, the 25th. Did we meet? :) I can't believe that was a month ago!

imagin916...

there's a thread on GRE scores and UCSF where some people list their stats. It's for MEPN, but it could be helpful. It usually pops up in a little box beneath this one that says "related threads." If you're curious, I'd check it out. :)

I also have a good friend who just graduated from the MSN program at UCSF with her FNP. She did not have to interview. She, too, had been a nurse for 5 years before applying, felt as though her GRE scores were abysmal, but felt like she presented herself well through her essay and she definitely had good recommendations.

Best of luck to you.

It's March in 6 days.;)
