Any Stonybrook University MSN students?

Hello,

I am in the process of applying to the FNP program and was just curious if there were anyone here that is going to this program. I am wondering how it will be, I did my BSN online through the University of Pheonix and this will be different as it is more of a semester format vs. the 5 or 6 week class type format they had.

I will probably be doing a part time program as with 3 kids and my youngest being 1yr old this week and working part time, I am hoping this will be something I can get done.

I live in the Pocono's of PA and chose here as when I spoke to the university even though they are distance they have clinical affiliations here nearby so I am hoping it won't be too bad at finding preceptors. I was contemplating going to a ground school but then I found out from a FNP friend that all the universities in my area expect the student to find and arrange their own clinical, so I would have this no matter which way I decided but I really like the idea of sitting in my PJ going to class.

Thanks,

Melissa

Hello Melissa, I am currently in my 2nd semester in Stony Brook's DSL FNP program. I am very pleased with the program thus far and I am enrolled part time. Its very flexible abd very easy to meneuver. Please contact me if you have any questions

I've applied as well. I gottagottagotta get in, I want to learn more!

Do we arrange our own clinicals?

When will we hear?

Stonybrook's program is the one I want, as well. They have a great reputation - from the time I was a kid, it was where you went for pre-med or Nursing, although Hunter was #1 for nursing.

I heard late march or early april. We set up our own clinicals but there is a database of clinical sites to choose from based on location and where other students have had clinicals

Hello All!

I am also reapplying to StonyBrook. I was a student in the FNP program from 1999 until 2002. I dropped out after September 11th with only my clinicals and two classes left, Sigh....SO Now, if I am lucky enough to get in, will have to start all over again. No worries!

The reason I am posting is to say that when I was attending Stony Brook FNP DL program it was....GREAT! The Professors are all very willing and able to be available and get back to you, if you submit an emailed question, quickly.

I only live 60 miles away so if I have a problem I could always borrow a car and drive up. Years ago there was a three day residency part of the first year: an introduction to the program, to the Instructors, to the computer etc. Not sure if they still require a student to be on campus like before.....

I did one of my undergraduate degrees on line, as well so I am well versed in the DL way of education.

Good Luck to everyone who is applying! Which program are y'all wanting to enter?

I applied for the FNP. I'm very rural and that's the most useful program working with a PCP, and covering a lot of area.

I have a question for you, please..I have just been accepted into the RN to BSN online program at SB and am planning on applying to the FNP program there also when the time comes(they let you apply half way through your bsn completion). My question is..How long does the program take to complete? I am hoping that it does not take 4 years since it is only part time, also do you have to take the MSN portion and then the FNP portion or do they combine this MSN/FNP? They are not very specific in their website!

Thanks

Hello the part time program takes 3 yrs. Once you graduate, you earn both an MSN and FNP degree. Let me know if you have any other questions

I hope you don't mind, but I do have another question. Do you know if the 2 year full time program is available online? One of the directors there emailed me and said 95% of people choose the 3 year part time program, but no other specifics(and I hate to keep bugging them) Do you know why? Maybe because most of us will be working RN's? I guess these are good questions to ask at orientation next month too, but its kind of nice to hear from someone who is doing it! I would like to get it done as quickly as possible, but of course at the same time want to be successful, as I do work and have a family! Well good luck in your studies!

They are strongly against completing the program in 2 yrs. I am assume because of all of the required clinical hours. I dont even think that they allow you to go full time.

Thank you so much for all the information! I really appreciate it, I am not sure I could handle finishing it all in 2 years anyway! Good luck in your studies, hope all is going well
