Any Stonybrook University MSN students?

Published

Hello,

I am in the process of applying to the FNP program and was just curious if there were anyone here that is going to this program. I am wondering how it will be, I did my BSN online through the University of Pheonix and this will be different as it is more of a semester format vs. the 5 or 6 week class type format they had.

I will probably be doing a part time program as with 3 kids and my youngest being 1yr old this week and working part time, I am hoping this will be something I can get done.

I live in the Pocono's of PA and chose here as when I spoke to the university even though they are distance they have clinical affiliations here nearby so I am hoping it won't be too bad at finding preceptors. I was contemplating going to a ground school but then I found out from a FNP friend that all the universities in my area expect the student to find and arrange their own clinical, so I would have this no matter which way I decided but I really like the idea of sitting in my PJ going to class.

Thanks,

Melissa

Hello Melissa, I am currently in my 2nd semester in Stony Brook's DSL FNP program. I am very pleased with the program thus far and I am enrolled part time. Its very flexible abd very easy to meneuver. Please contact me if you have any questions

I live in the bronx, how is the FNP program at stony brook. is it far??travel?? how much of the program was distant learning???

The whole program is distance learning, except for a 1 week orientation in the beginning.

not bad!! I think that will work great for me... ! I was checking out the website and they said that they will be suspending admission in nursing students in the FNP program because of NYstate budget cuts!! how awful, I wonder long it will be suspended!

I am really interested in the FNP program and not anything else. what have you heard about that situation??

I am currently in their RN-BSN distance learning. I was planning on doing the FNP program also:cry:...As soon as it was announced one of the professors told me that it was due to the budget crisis and at this point they have no plans to restart the program. If and when the budget improves they may decide to reevaluate.....So sad, now I am just finishing up my BSN, and it looks like I have to apply to another school now....I was really upset at first but now I have finally come to terms with it, haha...well sort of

what school are you interested in going? for you FNP?? I thought of College of Mount St vincents....

i'm going part time... i can't do it full time!

I notice that there is 600 clinical hours.. omg.. is that per semester or is that, for the whole nursing course..

so did you ever got back into stony brook? you shouldn't have to start over!! they should just let you finished where you left off...

How was the program?

good luck...

Kimaboogie,

Thanks for your info. re: the SUNY Stoney Brook MSN NP On-Line Program; I noticed on another thread that there is danger of failing a SUNY SB clinical if the student cannot locate her own clinical---is it that hard to find a clinical in NYCity? Do they allow you to travel out to Stony Brook Hospital---it's a 2-hr drive from NYCity, but at least it would facilitate graduation if the school permits you to do clinicals at its very own hospital???? Thanks again.

Its funny you ask me this today...2 weeks into the semester and Ive yet to find a clinical site. So I am one of those ppl in danger of not graduating. There are plenty of sites to go to in LI area but I live in the Bronx and can't drive

Kimaboogie,

That's a terrible situation---have you tried networking with NP's in the NY State NP Society? They have NYC chapters. Their website is: http://www.thenpa.org I just joined myself. Also, have you tried contacting the Education Dept of NYC hospitals?? I'm hoping you find something soon--let us know how you progress. I am considering attending SUNY SB on-line, but I also live in NYCity----are you in the Family NP program (for which they have closed new admissions)? Your experience is making me think I should attend an "on campus" program with its own clinicals here in the 5 boroughs of NYCity..... Thanks for any advice you have and good luck. :heartbeat

Thanks NYforlove, yesterday I found 2 potential preceptors at the last minute and will be starting clinical next week. The Stony Brook DSL program is a good one, having to find your own clinical site/preceptor is what is most stressful about the program. I suggest contacting NPs way before clinicals even begin to help alleviate some of the stress...
