Any Michiganders take the HESI recently? (the prenursing school one)

I have heard that the vocabulary portion of the HESI is rather difficult because the terms you need to know aren't in the study guide. Is there anyone with advice on how to prep for that portion of the test? TIA !

That's exactly what I meant. I think it's pretty clear that I'm not asking for a list of the answers, I'm wondering what kind of category these vocab words belong to. I don't have any previous medical experience so I'm curious if these are general medical terms that we would know after taking our prerequisite sciences, or if they're going to be specific diseases, drugs, etc. Basically, do you need to memorize a medical dictionary to excel in this section or would general knowledge suffice? Basically I'm looking for an example, like if someone asked me what you need to know for the SAT I'd say studying your Greek and Latin roots would be helpful.

I'm taking the HESI next week and I didn't think the study guide was that great. I like to take practice tests to gauge what my strengths and weaknesses are, and there are none in the study guide, and no examples of how questions are phrased. This thread has me worried now about the vocabulary because in the study guide they just list a few pages of words - and I've been memorizing them, but I didn't realize that I would need to know words other than these. Oh well - glad to hear the math wasn't as bad though. The reading section was really that bad? Great.....:(

Just took it last week. I scored very well, but the vocabulary/general knowledge section was difficult. There really is nothing to prepare for on that section that would help. The reading comprehension is just tedious. I would take that portion first. The math is very basic. Good luck all.

Do you mind if I ask what your overall score was :) ?

I just took it on the 11th. From what I found out the exam is different for everyone. Cause in my math section I had two very algebra like problems on it. The vocab section was really hard and was my worst grade. The math section saved my butt along with grammer and reading. Now all I have left to do is wait and hope.

Ughh, I hate algebra :bluecry1: ! I better make sure I refresh my memory on that. When I took the placement test at the college I totally bombed the algebra section, I think I got 17% :p .

Yes, there is algebra, but so very, very basic- elementary type problems

I just took my HESI entrance exam yesterday, got a 92.97 overall. I was hammered on the vocab portion, I blame the Marine Corps for not expanding my vocabulary. lol well,.hopefully that will be enough with my gpa to make the cut. fingers are crossed

I take the Hesi Saturday morning and I feel utterly unprepared for it. How can you study vocabulary when you don't have a list? I bought some math workbooks (turns out it's 6th grade math I need to bone up on!) and have been practicing my fractions but I'm a little worried about the vocabulary section :chair:.

92% is really good, you should be pretty happy :yelclap: !

Honestly, you could have almost anybody take this test. I feel that it was NOT at all designed for science related, or nursing specific. It was a basic all around test for general, math, vocab, grammer and reading comprehension. I know a lot of people that were studying like mad on their medical terminology to which they have kicked themselves for wasting their time. for once, I am hoping that maybe the fact that I am a guy helps my chances whatsoever. Maybe MCC needs to fill a quota for the next group. who knows...

92% is very good. Most of the people who get into the program score in the 80's and have a high gpa. If your gpa is high, you're probably in a good spot.

I know it's a basic test, that's the scary part :uhoh21: ! LOL. I thought I would have no problem with the reading and grammar portion but I missed the first two questions on the practice tests for reading in my study guide (purpose and topic). I still think my choices weren't necessarily wrong, the passage was so ambiguous! I guess the test is made to trip you up, to some extent! I have a 4.0 GPA currently, so my chances of getting into the program are all riding on Saturday's test results. Oh well, back to my study guide I go.....

Oh, do you have to get an 85% or better to get accepted (at MCC)? I think someone who applied to MCC told me that.

I can't wait for Saturday to be over with.
