Any Michiganders take the HESI recently? (the prenursing school one)

I have heard that the vocabulary portion of the HESI is rather difficult because the terms you need to know aren't in the study guide. Is there anyone with advice on how to prep for that portion of the test? TIA !

Kelly

GPA 3.9, Hesi 88. The Math portion saved my butt. No it's not a secret, a lot of large words and some medical terminology that I don't think a lot of people expected. No specifics are really coming to mind. Get a medical dictionary, and learn a new word everyday. If anything it will payoff down the road. I do this all the time at work to kill time. Hope it helps!

I'm shooting for a 90 or better on the exam :). My GPA when I finish my current class should be 3.96. Of course we'll see what anatomy does to that :uhoh21: ! Did you take micro and anatomy before you applied to the program? My friend who had a 3.8 GPA and scored 87 on the HESI didn't get in. I feel the pressure!

I thought the 88 was my death sentence, but I got in. My original start date was January and I asked if possible to be bumped up, an opening arose and I took it. Yes, I took micro and A&P before applying. Got 92% in micro and 96% in A&P. For anatomy just read your notes EVERYDAY! You don't have to tell me about the pressure. After I finished the HESI test I balled like a baby, you would've thought it was the end of the world. The three months after taking that test were rough, my husband tired of my talking about it. Are you planning on taking anything else with A&P? Have you scheduled you date for the HESI?

I am scheduled to take the HESI January 6th. I'm taking anatomy all by itself this fall. I have Professor Ragland, who did you have? I am more scared of micro than anatomy, at least anatomy interests me! I've taken all the other prereqs (english, nutrition, psych) and am in comparative religions right now. I plan on taking micro in January. If I actually get in the program, I'll take phys ed online next summer and be good to go. If I don't get in, I don't know what I'll do! I have my heart set on it!

Hi Jennifer!

I am starting Macomb's nursing program in August. Did you by chance interview at St John for the PCT positions they told us about at orientation?

Did you take anatomy at Macomb? If so, who was your professor and what did you think of the class? I need some reviews !

No, I didn't interview with St John. The postion sounded like a CNA and I don't really want to do that. I currently work at a local hospital inpatient pharmacy and will stay there for a little while. This hospital has a program that allows nursing students to be Nurse Techs once they have completed one med-surg clinical. So I'm thinking about that for next summer. My friend Beth also starts in August and is getting really nervous, so I'll tell her about you.:) As for A&P I had Mr. Allen and loved him! I didn't think micro was bad, but then again I took it last summer so it's really a bit of a blur..

What phys ed class can you take online? If you don't have your CPR certification I would recommend the First Aid/CPR class. I know I said this before but don't stress out you have plenty of time!

Just wanted to tell you how lucky you are to have Ragland. She is by far the best instructor that I have ever had! I had her for A&P as well as micro. She will do everything that she can to help you be successful in her class. Good luck!

Really? I had Ragland for Nutrition and thought she was great. She gave us study guides that if you followed them, you'd ace the exams. I'm hoping her anatomy class is the same way. She used to teach at Oakland. Did you have her at Macomb or Oakland? I was figuring she'd prep her students the same way in all the classes she teaches, that's why I grabbed her for anatomy this fall!

One phys ed class you can take online is "Focus: Lifestyle Choices" or something like that (I think there is a nutrition based one too). It just has to be a phys ed class that is over 2000. Golf, bowling, or anything like that won't count. I'm not worried about getting my CPR in with phys ed, I don't want to take it like now and have to retake it again if I actually get in the nursing program. I'd rather sign up somewhere else to take it closer to when I actually need it :).

I had her at Macomb. She uses a website that she puts up practice test questions (quite a few are actually on the exam with slightly different wording), she also has practice stuff for your lab tests. She doesn't hand out study guides, but the web site is a big help. I know a few people who went and literally begged for a spot in her classes. She really is wonderful.

:yelclap: I was soooooooooooo undecided about taking anatomy before I actually apply to the nursing program (since the strategy of many is to try to not mess with your GPA with the difficult science courses) but after I registered I felt really good about taking it. I am excited to dive in and hopefully get an A! It looks like I've got the right professor!

Kelly,

I didn't take A & P at Macomb, so I don't know anything about the professors. Sorry!
