Any Michiganders take the HESI recently? (the prenursing school one)

I have heard that the vocabulary portion of the HESI is rather difficult because the terms you need to know aren't in the study guide. Is there anyone with advice on how to prep for that portion of the test? TIA !

Hi there! I am new to Allnurses. I am also taking the HESI at Macomb in December. I have been trying to get as much info as I can about it, but have not been very successful. I bought the study guide, but it doesn't seem particulary helpful right now. Thankfully I have alot of medical terminology experience from my days as a transcriptionist so I know I'll have no problems with that should it be on the test. I am worried about the reading section, I have heard it is difficult. I have compiled a list of websites I am using to help me study. Feel free to PM if you would like them. I had Mrs. Ragland for BIO last semester she is a fantastic instructor. Unfortunately her classes did not fit into my schedule so I have Darlene Martin as an instructor for A&P. Does anyone have any experience with her? I would appreciate any information!

Thanks to all

Kristi

What school are you attending? I live in Mi, went to school in Ohio. I had a pre, interim, and post HESI. Oh...and it was bad if you didn't pass. Had 2 trys though. You can do it!

If you look her up on ratemyprofessor.com she's got good ratings, also on picaprof.com her students seem to do very well:

A-34.78%

B-17.39%

C-17.39

D-13.04%

F-17.39%

Dropped-14.81%

Hello MIKelly! Thank you very much for the information. I had never heard of these websites before, what a wonderful resource. Very helpful. Thanks soooo much!!!!

I believe Macomb has study guides for the HESI in the learning center. It really wasn't that hard of a test! The math was some algebra, a few conversions (quarts to gallons, ounces to pounds etc). Shockingly, math was one of the sections I scored highest in and I have never considered myself particularly good at math! The test will probably take you much less than the 4 hours they allow you. I think I finished in 1:30 or 1:45.

Is there really algebra on the test? It's not on the study guide at all. There's just fractions (adding, subtracting, multiply and divide), decimals, division, Roman numerals, metric conversions. Basic math but I didn't see any algebra. I stink at algebra :bluecry1: .

It's just basic math - no algebra!

Just wanted to tell you how lucky you are to have Ragland. She is by far the best instructor that I have ever had! I had her for A&P as well as micro. She will do everything that she can to help you be successful in her class. Good luck!

I totally agree!!!

As for the HESI... I was always an English/grammar "ace" all thru school... and I was really stressed about the math (not my best subject - or so I thought) - and I scored the best on the math portion of the HESI! LOL.. go figure. I did buy the study guide and refreshed myself on all the math, and that really helped. But as for the vocabulary/reading comprehension, there's not a lot of practicing/studying that you can do.

For the online PE class, I took that "Lifestyle Choices", and it was the BIGGEST pain in the orifice class ever. I swear that I would never take another online class again after that! I did more work for that stupid 2 credit class... which covers smoking, drinking, drugs, sex... and here I am at 41, after having two kids, learning about dating and birth control... LOL

My advice: Take the first aid class! :)

Now I will agree with this statement... I am currently in the IT field (hence the name changingcareer) and I took a basic computer course online and I ended spending more time and doing more work than I did for any other class I have taken so far. It was crazy.

Can someone who's already taken the HESI give me a few examples of the vocabulary that was on there? The study guide lists a few pages but they're more general medical terms, nothing specific like you would cover in an A&P class. I'm starting to wonder if I should go out and buy a medical terms book and cram!

I hate to inform you, but that would be cheating. Each of us has to sign a disclaimer before taking the test that we will not release specific info (ie. exact vocab words) from the test. Sorry!

I think the poster just wants to know what type of words, not an actual list of them. Like do we need to know pharmacology stuff? Anatomy stuff? Diseases? I don't think it's cheating to tell someone else what kind of vocabulary is on it. You sign a release so that you won't go home and tell your friend every question that's on there, not so you don't go and tell your friends what areas they need to bone up on. At least that's my take on it!
