Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?

Published

I am currently at Miami Dade College fulfilling prerequisites in order to apply for the Nursing program that starts fall 2009. I'd like to be in touch with other career changers who after getting a bachelor's in a non-nursing field decided to pursue the program at Miami Dade College.

Thanks for your interest!

pomakyya(whenever i read your username, i think of a panda..) you are on the ball! good for you. all this stuff will take me about 2 more weeks i think. i am going tomorrow to get one of my ppds and i forgot what else. i'm already cpr certified from earlier this year. it was a lot of fun. i think that if you do it at a fire rescue, it will come out cheaper. but i am not sure.

today i turned in my deposit and met a few people who were accepted also. it was nice. :-) it is finally feeling real.

30ncn, thank you for your kind wishes! i hope the best for you also. i know you really love this career or else you would have given up a long time ago. i know your perseverance will come through, and you will achieve and provide for your family as you wish! please don't give up because i am sure that when the craziness begins and i will want to give up, i'll remember how you and a handful of others didn't quit and it will help me keep working hard to achieve this goal! :-) i remember something a sister in my church said last week, and although it had spiritual connotations, i think it is applicable to this situation: "you haven't failed until you've quit".

on eagles wing,

although cpr certified, is it the bls certification? the reason i ask is because when i called ms. reeves, she reported it had to be bls for healthcare providers, which is why i'm getting certified, but i have a cpr certification already.

WELL MY FRIEND WE ARE ON THE SAME BOAT, REJECTION AGAIN, I DON'T EVEN CRY NO MORE, THERE IS ALWAYS A REASON WHY THINKS HAPPENED. CONGRATS TO ALL OF YOU THAT GOT ACCEPTED, CELEBRATE A LOT BEFORE START, I WORK IN A HOSPITAL THAT HAVE NURSING STUDENTS FROM MDC AND THEY SAID YOU HAVE NO LIFE DURING THAT TIME, IN THE CAFETERIA THEY HAVE LUNCH WITH A BOOK ON THEIR HANDS. BUT I KNOW THAT IF YOU GOT THIS FAR ALL OF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A GREAT JOB.:stdnrsrck:

Is anybody else really confused about the things we need to get done:/ ? It seems like a really long list and I could use some help! Here's what it seems like so far..

1) Go to Bursar's office and pay $100 and get reciept

2) Go to nursing department and give them the reciept with the response form

3) Get the unpaid schedual they'll give you and go to the Bursar's office to pay for it.

4) Create ATI student account online

5) Get criminal background check by making the appointment online (the first available appointment is for July 27th though!!!). And I don't think you're supposed to pay online so make sure you choose the option to pay the Bursar's office when you make the appointment cause you'll need three copies.

6) Make sure you are CPR/BLS certified (The next available session is for July 17th!!). I told the lady on the phone and she said that you need a copy verifying that. That means you have to drive there just to make the appointment.

And now I don't know where to get the documentation of MMR and Variecella immunization, drug panelling and TB skin tests. Am I missing anything else (besides the two mandatory meetings)? THANKS!!!

On my license I've got both... and the book we used was called "BLS for Health Care Providers"(CPR and AED).... In the class we learned CPR on different ages, Heimlich maneuver and AED, I think that was it. But maybe you should call and double check. If you didn't previously cover how to use an AED, then it probably wasn't a BLS class.

Yes, first go to the second floor in the medical campus to the Bursar's office. There you pay your $100 and they give you a receipt. Go into the library(NEXT DOOR!) and make a copy of it. Go to through the double doors next to the library and go all the way down until you are infront of the health science department. There is an elevator right there. Go to the third floor. You will be right in the Nursing department. Give your response form and the receipt, and that's all.

If you have medicaid, you can go to the Miami Dade Health Department, which is in that same hospital area. It is that little gray building on the corner before entering the hospital area. Right before UM hospital. Tell them you need immunizations, get an appointment. Get your TB first. It's free if you have medicaid. :)

I paid the Criminal thing online and they sent me an email receipt. I made the appointment the same day I got the letter, so my appointment is on July 12. I am sure they understand that there wasn't a day sooner to get an appointment.

Check with your PCP if they can do the drug tests. If not, just get your physical out of the way. Hope that helps. :-)

Pomkayya, I would be careful because when I was signing up for the CPR/BLS course I think I saw some options for just the CPR course.

Eagles, wow, thank you so much! Yeah, I'm sure they won't care if my criminal check is a little later. I'm gonna keep checking to see if anyone cancels just in case though. I really wish I would've started this whole process earlier :p...

oh god i think i am way behind. i have not even started. i am soo busy at work and in my classes this semester.... ugh. ok i will try to get started today. pomakyya you are way ahead of the game!

I got the BLS 4 HCP 7/1/10. I called the Bursar Office and the woman stated if we paid online for the background check, we need to bring a copy of the receipt from the transaction so that the authorization form is signed at the Bursar's Office. They in turn will print a new receipt. Hopefully, this is true...so many inconsistencies between the answers given at MDC. Anyhow, 2nd PPD, drug test results on Tues, physical on Wed, and PPD reading on Thurs.

Yeah for real. I went yesterday to another campus and was told the opposite. I am just going to to take it to the Med Campus so they can sign the authorization form. UGH!!! I called my pediatrician and she still had my vaccination dates... so I only need to take the Hep B... phew. :) Can't wait for the 15th. :redbeathe

There is hope for me! I know my doctor has all my records so I am hoping I have been vaccinated against most of them already and can just take the titer tests at the Doctor's office. Now if only I could get some time off to go to the doctor this week....

BTW Has anyone heard anything from financial aid? I keep waiting to hear about loans and have not heard back from the school.

Is a titer still needed if you've already had the vaccinations? I was under the impression you had to have one or the other? Not both. Am I correct in my assumption?

Wait, if you paid online for the fingerprints/background check you still have to have the Bursar's office sign off on it as well? Geeze. Just when I thought I had checked something off the list.
