Hey there...I am up for that!!! I have been going since the Summer semester 2004 and after a few unplanned things, have finally finished my pre-req's. I am hoping to start the Nursing program this Spring at night! We shall see!
What are you doing now? Are you doing your pre-req's only or are you in your 1st semester of nursing?

Hi guys! I know I've been on boards with both of you before. Good luck with everything! I actually decided, kind of at the last minute, that I am taking this term off (my second semester) because of a lot of reasons. My family is #1, and I felt they really needed me this term. I work 40 hrs a week, am taking Microbiology this term, and have a hubby and a daughter, so I just felt that doing 172 this term was too much on my plate. I will tell ya, though, it's hard to leave my group because you get very attached to your fellow students. So I'll be in the same boat with some of you next term! If you have any questions or if you need someone to talk to, because I know the first semester was very tough on me, I'm here! Even if you just need to vent!
I just finished my first week (yipeeeeeee). I'm stoked. I love my instructor (so far) and some 2nd semesters came in our class today and said "She's great, we all passed the PE!" I know they are trying to change that to a point vs. pass/fail. We'll see. I feel like I know my group so well already...I suppose there are only 10 of us. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this semester.

I just wanted to pop in and say "Hi". I drove past CLC today and couldn't help but thinking about my allnurses friends. Good luck to you guys this semester!
Your so funny...I drive past there every day on my way home from work (actually, not anymore now that my daughter is at a daycare and not my sisters), but anyway, I always think of you guys too!!! Wonder if I've had you in a class or seen you around!!
clcstudent22307, congrats on finishing your first week...I really hope I get in for Spring...I'm so nervous for November to come around. I'm sure you know, but I am taking the entrance exam again on Tuesday...so nervous!! Hoping to do a little better than the 85% I got on my last test!!! I really hate the vocab part and if anything, that's what'll bring me down!
CLC172, who do you have for Micro this semester? I just finished that this past semester (Spring). I had X. X was hard to understand at first, but you catch on to what he's saying quick and I had no problems after that. Good luck and good for you for knowing your family needs you. That is why I finished all my pre-req's before even attempting to get into the program...I know I can't handle taking other classes along with the Nursing classes.
Just started my Child Growth & Development class online. She doesn't really give you much...we have 3 tests (100 points each) and two papers (I think) at 100 points each, so that's what we'll be graded on. I don't think I like that too much - not a lot to be graded on - if you mess up on one thing, it could cost you big time! But so far, just have to read. This isn't a required course, but I'm sure you know if your not enrolled the previous semester, you don't get the "priority enrollment" the week before and with possibly having to sign up for the Nursing classes, I have to have night classes, so I wasn't willing to take the chance of waiting til the following week!
It is true that the vast majority of people pass the PE. I know of 3 in 171 who did not pass last year. The problem is, 2 of those 3 were completely unfair. 1 of them sued the school, won a 3rd PE, passed, and is now in 172, though. I think that helped facilitate the changes as well.
I hope you enjoy your first term. Are you on days or nights now? If you are a night student, we may be in the same class next term!

Child growth and development sounds like a pretty good class to take. It will probably help you in your 2nd semester when you do Pediatrics. I hope you enjoy it! I'm a night student too, and those spots are limited, so I totally understand!
I have X for Micro this term. I like her, but so far I really don't like the class. Oh well, it's a means to an end. Child growth and development sounds like a pretty good class to take. Cool, I'm glad you have a teacher you like. I wasn't all that enthused about taking Micro either...hence the reason it was literally the last pre-req I took! I didn't like it, but then again I did - the labs were boring, but I actually enjoyed doing the final... I will give you some advice.
Basically, for the lab final, they gave us 3 "unknown" bacteria. What we had to do was a) do a gram stain to determine whether the bacteria was gram+ or gram- and determine whether it was cocci or rod, and whether they were single/cluster/etc... b) from there, we could determine what tests we should run (which you will use the chart that I talk about below) c) you are also graded on following procedure - making sure you throw your used slides in the right spot, making sure you take tape off of the test tubes...etc... (we were not docked any points if we went over a certain amount of tests, but I have heard some people say they were, so when final time comes around, I would run that past your teacher and find out if there is a limit on how many tests you are allowed to run)
Basically through the semester, you will be learning how to run the tests and read the results. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING!!! Write down the color of your culture before you inoculate it, write down everything about your results when you get them...color, shape, etc...EVERYTHING!!! You are allowed to use your notes on the lab final (at least we were, so I assume you will too). So, everything you have written down will definitely work in your benefit. I wish I had been more detailed when I took my notes...just make sure you are filling everything out.
(VERY IMPORTANT) The chart in the back of your lab manual...definitely fill that out as you go along. Don't wait and do it later (at the very least, do it that night when you get home). And DON'T go online and get the information and fill out the whole chart. Only fill out the bacteria you actually did the specific tests on (that way when you are doing your final, it'll be easier to narrow it down...catch my drift?)
I was probably one of the older people in my class, (at 31), but it seemed like a lot of the people rushed to get things done and get out of there. Trust me, in the end, you will benefit if you just take the time to fill everything out and not worry about getting out of there by a certain time.
Good luck in the class...I liked Lab more than lecture. Not to put a damper on things, but it seemed like Micro was the LONGEST semester ever!!! But that could have also been because that was the first semester I had to actually "physically" go to school...after having my daughter in 2005, I was able to do online courses.
You will do fine!!! If you need anymore pointers, let me know!

I'm just curious about PE...Someone said they were changing it to a point system....Did they say how the point system will work & when it will start???
She didn't say when it would start. Hopefully next semester. I would imagine that it'll be a grading scale w/ points, like any other test.
CLC172 - I'm in the day program. I have X. She's very pleasant. Hear anything about her?? I hope that your return next semester is a smooth one. I agree about the classmates being close knit. Fortunately 6/10 of us live extremely close to one another. We'll be carpooling for clinical.
