Any of you have a bad past?

Published

I graduated high school in the year of 1992 and went straight onto college. I only lasted a year and did not pass even one class. I had no interest in it and did not know what I wanted to do with my life, so I just goofed off.

I have been back in school for about a year and a half now and I am doing really well. This time I am very serious about getting my education and making something of myself. My question is do you think that this one year will kill my chances of getting into NS? :crying2:

Fun2Care, I notice your sig changed..did you find out anything?!??!?!? **crosses fingers**

And, yes, can I please join the embarassing past club?

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the grace period (I'd been gone about 3 years)--however, I'd been screwing up since freshman year.

I went to a private liberal arts college in Jackson, MS for my freshman year of college, and got attacked and also in a bad car accident. Wound up dropping half my classes. Sat out a semester and starting going to the local university. I'm only half-joking when I say that there are almost as many "Ws" on my transcript as there are grades. And the grades up to when I dropped out the third time (took another semester off somewhere in there and "dropped out" when my maw-maw passed away) weren't stellar--there were a few A's, but mostly B's and C's (even a D, which I retook for a C)--the problem was, I was throwing myself into my part-time job. I had no idea what I wanted to do with school, but with my job I could see the promotions and hours, so I put almost no studying in.

So I came back in Fall 2003..started back up with around a 2.95 or 3.0--every semester I've been back, I've had a 4.0 (except for 1 B in maybe 40-50 classes)--I've still only pulled my GPA up to a 3.5 ADJUSTED cumulative. I'm just literally freaking out until decisions come out. My transcript is so embarassing, and I'm up against people from Harvard and 4.0s and rocket scientists . I'm just so stressed/freaked out because for once in my life, I'm finally happy in my decision. From me the time I decided to go for nursing, I've never looked back. I've applied to my dream school for my dream job. Just compared to everyone else, I feel they're going to laugh at my past.

I'm just preparing myself to apply for the Fall program. I'll be retaking my Algebra during the winter-mester (12-13 to 1-19). HOPEFULLY, it pays off and I get an A. So far I'm making an A in my music appreciation class, and I do not expect that to change. So, if everything goes as planned, I'll be applying with an 4.0 GPA for my pre-reqs and all 17 credits of support class complete with a 4.0 GPA.

If I don't get in with a 4.0/4.0, I really don't know what I'll do. I'm sure I will, the probabilities would be high, even though there's always that chance...... Anyway, going in with a 4.0/4.0 will help me keep my GPA ok if I happen to make B's and C's in nursing school. (I don't want to, but I've heard it was that hard.)

So, your date is coming up soon! Good luck!!!!!

Yeah, most colleges I've ever been to insist on you transferring all previous course work and if you don't, they say you are jeapordizing your admission and falsifying your past record. I'm not sure how they'd find out but who wants that problem hanging over your head. I do know in Texas you can apply under a 10 year grace/fresh start type program, where even though they ignore the previous course work you had over 10 years old, you must still transfer it.

How will they find out? The easiest way is through the financial aid office. If anyone has gotten financial aid or even filled out a form for a different school, the Dept. of Education keeps a record of it!!!

I did accidently leave off my massage school attendance from my application (my GPA was very high, so nothing to be ashamed about, but I thought, do they need to know about massage school?) to a University and when I filled out financial aid forms, they were sent back to this University. On this form they had a list of ALL of the schools in which I had received financial aid. I was then sent a letter saying that they couldn't admit me until they had the transcript from my massage school and asked why I left it off. I told them I didn't think trade schools mattered (but apparently they do). Thank goodness they understood and admitted me anyway.

Now, it would be a little more difficult to catch someone who has no gov't record (ex. financial aid) of attending that school, but all it takes is for someone to tell on you....yikes!

I don't think they would care what happened more than 10 years ago. At least I would hope not. People change. You graduate HS, excited to be leaving your parents and you have all these ideas about what college is like. You were young and made mistakes. The same thing happened to me when I went to college and it's still being held against me even though I have a 3.25 GPA. I tried applying to another college (I'm at a community college now) but they refused to accept me because of what happened five years ago. I think in your case since it's been so long that it wouldn't affect your chances. Talk to whoever is head of nursing at your school and explain your situation.
