Any Australian trained RNs working in the US?

Published

Hello, I hope someone can help :). I completed my University degree last year and have been working as an RN since January in Australia. I've been studying for the NCLEX-RN test in hope of moving over soon, unfortunately I didn't pass the test last month, it was so hard! :(. The content we studied at Uni is different and the medications also have different names. Any tips or advice from an Australian who passed the test?? I'm using Kaplan and Saunders as study guides... any help would be greatly appreciated!! Cheers :).

Are you coming over on a fiancee visa???? I am married to an American and i have children that are American citizens but even then the visa hoops i had to jump through were crazy!!!!

I had many trips to the embassy in Sydney.........expensive............but on a bright note the last time i went i sat next to Andrew G (idol) who was getting a visa too :redpinkhe

I hope it is as stress free as possible for you!!!!

Lol I didn't know there was such thing as a fiancee visa :). There is the E3, but we need to be married for me to go on his visa :) (he is also Australian). I'm a bit of a Miss Independent woman and I'm trying to get to the US myself, we've been doing long distance for 2.5 years now and even if he were to pop the question (wohoo!) I still need to pass that NCLEX-RN test!

I know what you mean about costs, I live on the west coast and need to fly to Sydney each time I sit the test... really adds up $$$.

Trying to stay relaxed and focused, just seems like the never ending journey. It will all be worth it in the end :). Thanks for your support! Maybe I'll meet some celebs along the way :).

Really the K1-K3 is only usable if one is a US citizen. If you are looking at E3 then I do suggest checking ghillbert posts out as they have done this route

Hi LBates!

I am an Australian nurse living in Massachusetts.

I am still studying for the Nclex as i wait for my ATT (which is on its way)

Yes the content is different but yet the principles are the same (if you know what i mean!!!)

I have studied from many different sources (some say bad move.....some say good)

And the ones that i have found to be the best are:

1) Random fact file (a sticky on here)

2) La Charity

3) Exam cram

4) Exam master (google this and sign up for free.....3 800 higher end questions)

As i said i have not sat it yet.....so only time will tell if these sources are any good!!!!

What was your exam like? Did you use the elimination strategy?

Alot of people say that it is easy to narrow it down to 2 possible answers. Did you find that to be the case?

hi TabithaB

Did you really get 3800 questions for FREE on the Exam master site?

It looks to me, like you have to pay...

Nope i didnt pay a thing........just register and create new exams......it will let you create one at a time!

I have done 3 000 Q's so far for free.....and many others on this site have as well.

Wow, that was quick! :) Thanks!

posted twice again!!!! see below!!!

No prob's cloudwatcher!!!

Let me know what you think of the questions.............. and how you do...........it will total all of your scores for a percentage mark. I am sitting on 75% right now!!!!

I hope that this is good enough!!!!

Hey all

Aussie trained RN here too. I'm about to get my ATT and planning on taking NCLEX soon. Just started on reviewing seriously not long ago, I really just want to just take it once (as all of us takers hope to do).

BTW, I'm in FL. Got here on fiance visa and married my American man end of last year. Long distance love for 4 long years ...lol.I just finished my hurdles with the immigration proccess, so now I'm starting with my NCLEX journey.

I'm using Kaplan books that I inherited from a friend but I think it is a little outdated. I'm kinda hesitant to go straight to practice questions. So I'm going through contents first. Is it worth going straight to Q's???

How do guys go bout it?

If you feel confident with knowing your content you could go straight to answering questions and reading the rationales and only study content if it is an area you are struggling answering questions in

Pharmacology may be different and we do have several threads discussing pharmacology

Hey Crystelle!!!!

FL huh? I go to florida to see my father in law!!! Nice and hot like the Gold Coast (where i am from)

Where do you hail from???

I posted already on here what i am doing........i started with questions straight away and am reviewing content at the same time. I just figured that if i got comfortable with the question style that it would be easier to narrow it down.

I finished uni 10 years ago and have been in paeds ever since, so i am lacking in alot of content for general and other specialties!!!

I am freaking out about this exam........one person says easy then the next says worst exam ever! LOL! who to believe!

I have done heaps of different exams from all sorts of sources and i am sitting around 75%

I am hoping this means that i am up there with a chance!

What kind of scores are you getting??

Keep in touch........... not enough Aussies over here :-)

Really HOT here (FL) right now..., it's nice but can get too much sometimes.

I'm from Sydney and my last RN experience was PAEDS also, only 2 years tho (not long as 10 yrs).

I've really havent tested myself, I will let you know once I do. 75% sounds great. You should be good to go then, if you're scoring that high.

I just got my eligibility to take the test from FL board of nursing and it took awhile for my education to be evaluated.

When are you taking yours Tabitha? Should I apply for ATT now or wait until I've done enough Q's? I know that it has a 3 months expiration days.

Silverdragon102 - thanks for the advise. I should really start doing as many Q's as I can.
