We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.
I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?
As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.
I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?
Finished the podcast with Dr. Offit .. . love the "stalker" in the audience. And the grad student who stood up later to "redeem" the image the stalker gave of grad students.
Very good discussion. I've heard Dr. Offit speak many times and really love how he relates to the audience.
Unfortunately, as he states, "anecdote trumps epidemiology" And that's a hard thing to overcome.
Thanks for linking that.

Can you please re-post that link?
Please wait... I will repost this video since it gives a great example of what "proven" means in science and what it means to the general public.
Here it is.
Quote[/url] from andi78 There is too much focus on pushing pills and not enough focus on actually solving the problem. If that was working we wouldn't see so many sick people. It's not working. It's an old system, and it needs to be updated. [/quote'](Sorry to hijack you, wtbcrna, but I've blocked this person, which is a bit futile as she's quoted everywhere!)
My great grandparents exercised daily (manual labor) in fresh air (country living), ate their own home-grown veggies and home-raised meat, pre-antibiotic feeds. All of them died in their 40s and 50s. Even my grandparents died in their 50s and early 60s. Life expectancy in 2014 was 78.8 years, so we MUST be doing something right! (And my great grandparents and grandparents did lots of homeopathic treatments.) Jest: a lot more sick people were seen in the past. Anecdote, I know, but still . . .
Got to wonder why andi78 doesn't just go to work for a Holistic/Alternative Medicine doctor's office.
Maybe because she's not really a nurse? I honestly hope she is an internet troll, and not a nurse, because I am horrified that a nurse could spout some of the stuff I've read from her here.

"Vaccines on the current schedule are associated with autoimmune disease rate increases in the USA and that is why I won't get my child vaccinated."
Before you all flame me...this is a stupid comment provided upon request, it does not represent my thoughts or feelings on the topic.
