Anti-vax nurses? Are you serious?

Published

We were discussing the Disneryland measles outbreak at work, and I was appalled to find some of my co-workers refuse to vaccinate their kids. They (grudgingly) receive the vaccines they need to remain employed, but doubt their safety/necessity for their kids.

I must say, I am absolutley stunned. How can one be a nurse and deny science?

As a nurse, you should darn well know what the scientific method entails and what phrases such as "evidence based" and "peer reviewed" mean.

I have to say, I have lost most of my respect for the nurses and mistrust their judgement; after all, if they deny science, on what premise are they basing their practices?

The fact that you don't care about the statistics people here are sharing and you don't have time to check accuracy of information kind of leaves you without much to say except how you FEEL.

I don't think we should base our decisions on feelings . . . those can mislead us.

Hard facts, statistics, research . . . .that's where I want to focus.

I don't have time *right now* as I am a busy mother of two trying to get through school. I promise you I went through all the statistics when I made the decision several years ago. I don't remember the statistics for every disease and vaccine off the top of my head...

Obviously this vaccine story is in the news but I was pleasantly surprised to hear Dr. Paul Offit on the show Doctor Radio (Sirius) at 5 p.m. He was being interviewed for the whole hour about immunization fears. One of the callers just lambasted him with innuendo and he did an excellent job of rebutting every point she made. Wish I could link you to that interview - but if you have Sirius Radio, you can probably find it on their online site. (Dr. Radio).

Here is a link to his website though and some interviews. Just an FYI.

Interview with Paul Offit | Paul Offit

I have zero respect for Paul Offit. If there was ever a conflict of interest... Paul and his rotavirus vaccine would be it...

Specializes in hospice.

Arguing further with aubrienora is wasted effort. She just admitted she's completely comfortable with her child's unvaccinated status causing the death of someone else's child. There's nowhere to go from there.

It's really easy to say, "my heart would be broken but death is part of life," when it's not YOUR CHILD ON THE SLAB IN THE MORGUE.

The selfishness is breathtaking.

Specializes in Med nurse in med-surg., float, HH, and PDN.

Home-schooling doesn't protect kids from being exposed; think of every single public place you go with your kids.

Do you think every Doc and the CDC a bunch of liars in bed with Big Pharma?

When you were in the service, was your diet different than your pre-enlistment diet? We're you exposed to a lot of sunlight? A lot of stress? All of these cause hives. Joint pain is a hallmark of somatoform disorder.

No, no, and not really. There are other causes of joint pain... like vaccination... :)

It's an old saw, but correlation does not imply causation. I had a boatload of innoculations in the Peace Corps, and I'm fine. That's anecdote, not evidence, as is your military vaccination story.

I never claimed it as evidence. I was asked about my vaccination status so I shared that information along with it because inevitably, had I not, you all would have said "See!! You were vaccinated and you're fine!!" Which, by the way, would be anecdote as well if it were true. I never claimed my troubles as evidence of anything. I believe I actually stated that they were not...

In the interest of your own well-being, aubrienora, please look broadly at these "hind-sight is 20/20 vision" connections you're making. Because if you are wrong, and overwhelming evidence indicates you are, you will not be well

I am well, thank you. I avoid the triggers for my hives and joint pain and I'm just fine. :)

Home-schooling doesn't protect kids from being exposed; think of every single public place you go with your kids.

It does reduce the risk to some extent. There is risk either way... that's life.

Do you think every Doc and the CDC a bunch of liars in bed with Big Pharma?

Not every doctor. The CDC? Yes.

Arguing further with aubrienora is wasted effort. She just admitted she's completely comfortable with her child's unvaccinated status causing the death of someone else's child. There's nowhere to go from there.

My child's status will be the cause of nothing... Disease exists... that's the reality of life on this planet. Of course I'm not comfortable with the death of someone's child, but it is IN NO WAY MY FAULT if a child contracts a disease. I am not willing to sacrifice the wellness of MY children for yours. That's not selfishness, that's common sense from an evolutionary standpoint. I'm sorry if that offends you, but I have the right to put the interest of my children above that of others. So do you. If you feel that vaccines are the best choice for your kids, then by all means, vaccinate away. I disagree and will do what is best for MY children because I AM THEIR MOTHER AND THEY ARE MY RESPONSIBILITY.

Specializes in PACU, pre/postoperative, ortho.

And you will be responsible if they come down with any number of very preventable diseases.

Specializes in ICU + Infection Prevention.

aubrienora is a student who is so confident in her beliefs, that she won't listen to anything you have to say... but she does have a pathological need to come and convince us she is right... because deep down her doubts gnaw at her. That is why she has to show up here and get us to believe in her conspiracy theories. She needs that validation because she cannot admit a mistake. She is far to emotionally invested in her decision to the point where she abdicates responsibility as a member of society and believes that "what will happen will happen" just not because of any choice she makes. Don't waste your time on closed minded people like that.

What is frightening is that someone like that is trying to become a RN.

A quick look at her posting history shows that she attends ITT Technical Institute, an unaccredited for-profit program of poor repute. Her only posts on this forum besides anti-vaxxer posts were to ask how much money she would make. I wish I could say I was shocked.

There are people who believe they are justified in driving 90mph in a school zone too. You won't convince them otherwise. Luckily, the police will cite them. Society may decide at some point that people don't have the right to endanger children and society based on misinformation about vaccines. Some states already believe that.

Cute. (:

Oh my gosh . . .were you the one who called in last night????

He decimated that lady's mean-spirited comment with the truth.

Horseshoe - I went to the website but can't find an archive but did find on the right side of the page a sliding "Doctor Radio on Twitter" . . . . and it has the announcement of the show last night and a Twitter comment.

Way to go Dr. Offit for telling the caller "Allison" (not me!) how ignorant she is!

I'm sure most of you have seen the thread started about pre-vaccine days but just in case:
