Hello all! I been following this forum for awhile and I have always found a lot of good information on here... I thought I would start a forum to reach out to anyone who may be applying to AVC for fall of 2015. I know we may be finding out in May. How does everyone feel about this? I know that stats requirement may of helped people that already had the the class done a small advantage. IF I get in, I'm concerned about whether or not I should work or not. I'm full time at a mortgage company which I know I would definitely have to leave... Does anyone know how to get on with a medical based job without any CNA, or medical assist license? Or if chanes of getting a job in that field are even likely with no licensing.
Hopefully some room will clear up!
fishbubbles I made a typo earlier I tried to edit it actually I am number 90 for some reason I was thinking 50 (wishful thinking lol) so me and you will probably fall in the same class! You honestly never know a lot of people may get in at a lottery school there's 7 programs in the La area alone also COC so stay a persistent and hopeful and it will come sooner than we think
Oh man this is going to be a long few months till September when they redo evaluations for next semester. I'm really nervous. I already have a few friends in the program and they are struggling but they are glad they're getting it over with. They said it was actually harder than 3 of the science classes combined!
What else have you guys heard about the program?
For all of you who have been disappointed by not getting into the fall at AVC...I was once 194 on a wait list...a waitlist modified by a point system. In March 2015 I was still 84 on the list...that's how long I was on the "list". Now in the mean time I finished my BA in Psychology, became a CNA. got my phlebotomy certification, went on to get my Psych Tech License and have been working in hospitals for about 5 straight years. on top of all of that, I was applying to several schools in LA county including BSN programs and even ELMN programs...very competitive out there.
Do your absolute best in every class you take; it is no longer just a class. It could be the difference between getting in or waiting longer. Just a few figures and comments: COC uses a point system that is HEAVILY weighted by your core GPA, (that means Anatomy, Physiology and Micro), they do not tell the applicants this but 90% of their selection is GPA...PERIOD, (the director told me, in no uncertain terms, "if you do not have a 3.75 or above in the core classes, you will not get in"); then they use a lottery system for the other 10%...I know this because I spoke with the program director last year. You are also competing against anywhere from 250 to 500 applicants a semester at various schools. Your best bet is to dig in, do your research as to the requirements to get in, fight like crazy to get your required documents in and always follow up with the program as to the whys and hows of being selected or rejected. Always keep in touch with the individual programs your are applying to and this way they get to know you; (this past year I applied to LA Trade Tech/LA City College...was not selected but I called to find out why and the program director what happened...then offered a few suggestions on how to improve my potential. The director was very gracious about it.
Get some healthcare experience...even if you are volunteering...volunteering has weight also in some of the point systems. if you're interested in volunteering you can contact COPE HEALTH SOLUTION'S website. Becoming an RN has become very tough in CA because about 10 years to 15 years ago the drop-out rate was around 25%...this is not a good thing to have a 75% retention rate when much of your funding comes from the people who stay in RN programs.
The long story short...along with this giant run-on sentence is that YOU have to research; YOU have to prioritize; YOU have to keep at it: YOU have to continue towards your goal even if becoming an RN means you have to be a CNA, A phlebotomist, a Psych Tech first...YOU have to be committed to it.
Good luck to you all and for those who finally got the 'call'/letter, see you soon.
Very inspiring story Skippee! Hopefully We'll all make it to our dream jobs.
On the side note, can anyone tell me the email or phone number for the nursing program. I need to ask a question unless someone already knows the answer here.. Do you think they would accept a Medical Assisting Certificate for the points system? I just realized I still have an active Medical Assisting Certificate (clinical and administrative) but since they did not mention it on the application i did not bother putting it on. Thanks for the reply~
