It appears to give patient the freedom to voice any complaints, some will give compliments, but most often the ones who spend time writing in the blanks have complaints

UGH, I know!!! One complaint on that stupid thing was a patient said that "the nurses are always on the computer." Well, of course we are, we CHART ON THE COMPUTER! In the ICU, we are supposed to wheel them into the rooms to chart, so yeah, we are going to be on the computer!

It's interesting, for 23 years I have always had the attitude that people will complain. That being said, I am always nice to people, always have been, it is my general nature to be too nice to everyone. Sure I may get walked on every now and then, knock on wood, never had a complaint against me for anything from a patient.

People are at their worst in the hospital situation-expect it. It's not an excuse just a reality, I will continue to be nice whether they like it or not :D.

OH man! I don't think I'd want to be your patient. It is our job to be nice and smile, even when we don't want to. We care for patients, their physical AND MENTAL aspects. Go in there with a frown, don't even speak a word, take their v/s, invade their personal space.. that is umm.... rude, no matter how you put it.

And I wouldn't want to be your nurse. It is not our job to smile, doofus. :)

p.s. I don't mean doofus as a name calling type of thing. It's just a term of endearment I use quite often!

My Grandma always said if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all.

You are both entitled to your opinion....unfortunately the regulations are on the side of: NO SLEEPING, NAPPING, OR OTHERWISE it is professional misconduct. period.

It is actually amazing the number of people who are ignorant of progress in the profession.

The current focus on pt. service does interfer with performing nursing duties. For instance, many pt.'s keep the room dark day and night. How are we supposed to ID the pts. accurately? Some get depressed and staying in the dark all day just makes it worse. Many don't want to take a shower, yet their WBC count is under 1,000 (work at an oncology hospital).

The hospital I work at is non-profit and the overwhelming majority of pts., even the very old, have pulled out of the healthcare system far, far, far more money than they ever put in, yet they still have a sense of entitlement. They act like the hospital is some kind of spa and that they deserve to be treated like they're at a four-star hotel and they get angry when they're not. They resent when they have to have procedures or tests done at a time that is inconvenient to them. It never occurs to them that they never got their ice water in a timely fashion because I was busy with a pt. who was very sick.

And the smile issue is just stupid. How about the patient who is in depressed, in crisis, and/or in pain, might not be offended if the CNA came in smiling? I would...

For most people, calling someone a doofus is offensive. If you have to explain that it means something different to you, then use another word.

What I think stinks about patient complaints is that they can give "excellent" scores all the way thru our customer satisfaction survey then give a lesser score to ONE aspect of their stay (meals, satisfaction w/docs...anything that the NURSES don't control) and the WHOLE survey gets an "unsatisfactory". AND THE NURSING STAFF TAKES THE BRUNT OF THE UNSATISFACTORY!!

Plus, having been a patient at my own hospital six times this past year, I can tell you that the survey takes *forever* to complete and gets so annoying that I've told the person, "Look...my entire visit was excellent...I have NO complaints about my stay!" just to get off the danged phone. :(

If I ever receive the press gainey survery I ignore it. I know I shouldn't because I was chosen for my opinion, but if I was unsatisfied with my care they would hear from me directly not in some survey.

The advertisment for our new hospital that our system is opening, "Do you want to feel like you are in a 5 star hotel?" "What if a hospital took care of you when you weren't sick?" (This is verbatim)

I agree... I had one pt come in w/ a DX of alcoholic hepatitis and she said that she hadn't eaten for 4 days b/c she had been vomiting. So of course, before I can even get my assessment done, she's focused on meal time...honestly... It's as though she was cured the moment she got on the floor.

A nurse should be polite, but faking happiness would rub me the wrong way.
